    It's nice that some people are finally discovering Roxy Music. Their first five albums are terrific, yet rarely discussed.

      In the US they're really only known for Avalon. It's a good album, but their early albums are far more innovative

    Great reaction! This is my favorite Roxy Music song, it captures all that is great about Roxy Music. Poetic lyrics , smoking instrumentals, brilliant vocals, it’s a masterpiece! I’d recommend In Every Dreamhome a Heartache, Both Ends Burning, Out of the Blue, Editions of you, so many classics to choose from. Roxy’s lyrics are always just obscure enough to leave you thinking about their songs for days...

    I feel like I am in your gang now and thanks for listening to this! I feel that this song is an actual piece of art, a stand-alone piece of art that happens to be music. I take the lyrics to be how transient dating is, how Ferry is so shallow for dating models, how they come and go. I read that the music was laid down and overnight Ferry walked in and just laid out all the lyrics and vocals in one go. The whole timing of Ferry is out of this world and the more you hear this song then more you get out of it. It's like a baggy sweater that's so comfortable to wear or listen to again and again. Its utterly genius. No band can cover Roxy.... none because of musicianship, timing, style etc. So glad you heard this.

    You most definitely need to listen to Amazona. It was the guitarist’s first co-write for Roxy Music. Phil Manzanera is simply stunning. After Amazona pick one of Andy Mackay’s co-writes, perhaps Bitter Sweet or Sentimental Fool.
    Phil Manzanera has played with David Gilmour, Jack Bruce, John Cale, Godley and Creme as well as producing Pink Floyd’s recent albums.
    Andy Mackay has recorded with Paul McCartney, John Cale, Duran Duran, Pet Shop Boys and more.

    • @LucyOLastic
      @LucyOLastic ปีที่แล้ว

      Mackay was the only member not to appear on a Bryan Ferry solo album. Ah well Ferry being a perfectionist could command the best players on the scene, who were rather disparaging of Mackay's abilities. Both Manzanera and Mackay were awesome in Roxy Music despite their limitations, particularly focussed on the fourth album "Country Life." They both felt rather undervalued. Eddie Jobson was also unhappy. He felt his contributions were a waste of his talent. "I just want to burn..." He was copped by Zappa and then formed UK. Those first five albums, or rather four, were brilliant, but Roxy suffered for being shoved down an increasingly narrow path exacerbated by Ferry's solo ambitions. He no longer had anyone to challenge him.

    Hi guys. I’m so glad you liked this track. The album (Stranded) that this comes from was their first number one album in the UK. Brian Eno had left and was replaced by Eddie Jobson, who later went on to form the band ‘UK’ with John Wetton and Bill Bruford.
    Roxy’s guitarist is El Magnifico, Phil Manzanera.
    Every Roxy album is different, but has a unifying thread running through. I think all the albums are great, but of course, I’m biased being a fan. You will find that every album has this change of tempo on at least one track and it’s a kind of Roxy trademark.
    There are too many songs to recommend, but I think you guys would like the track ‘Prairie Rose’ from their 1974 album ‘Country Life’. Give it a listen sometime.
    Thanks for your show. I’m listening to a lot of things for the first time too. Really interesting. Keep it coming.

    Mother of pearl is one of the most astonishing songs ever written,its basically abou mother of pearl - (fake pearl) versus real pearl. How you can have a woman whos a real woman who does not fulfill your needs like a a fake plastic woman (ie a teenage dolled up "tart") These early Ferry songs are very VERY deep.

    The story behind this (probably my favourite RM song - and Bryan Ferry's, too) is worth relaying. It's a two parter, the first part being a wild party or nightclub scene. The band thought the second part was an overly long instrumental. So they were amazed when he came into the studio the next day and laid that entire lyrics over it. Until then, they hadn't heard a single word of it. The second part is a reflection after the previous night's hedonism on the emptiness of it all, and how he'd rather just settle down and have, which he eventually did some ten years later.
    For more fantastic guitar work from Phil Manzanera, check out Amazona, from the same album, Stranded.

    • @intothemusic908
      @intothemusic908  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I tend to agree. A read of the lyrics from beginning to end also seem to support that thinking. I love the way Bryan delivers those lines, and how they coincide with certain musical sounds that snap out of nowhere. And funny you comment on this now, as I went on a a month-long binge this past August in listening to it over and over. And the urge is still as strong as ever since the calendar turned September, but I feel like I need to push back at least for another week or two so that I don't get sick of it. All said, just a masterpiece of music. - Greg (the one who reacted to it in the episode)

      @intothemusic908 A hard track to get sick of, but I know what you mean! I noted that you've mentioned Bowie a few times in your videos. He and Ferry were quite pally and very respectful of each other. Bowie said Ferry was the best lyricist around. As a fan of both, I concur. Keep up the good work.

    One thing to consider when hearing this track for the first time is that it should be listened to in context - along with the following track on the album Stranded, which is Sunset. The ending of Mother of Pearl leaves a silent void, which is then filled with the solem notes of a piano, that rise and build to a crescendo. Cheers from the UK!

    It’s my favourite Roxy song. I saw them live at Ford Auditorium in Detroit. I’m Canadian and Ford Auditorium was between the Border tunnel and Cobo Hall so it was easy peasy to get to. I went when Brian Eno was a member of the band. He played synthesizer and wore this jacket that had feathers on the shoulders. The band was very avant garde. Interesting music, interesting costumes and Brian Ferry’s vocals was an irresistible combination.

    Love you Guys! I got into Roxy in 1972 when I was 14, when the first album was released which includes If there is Something. Mother of Pearl as you know is off Stranded, the 3rd album and first album after Eno left. Song for Europe on Stranded is a song you simply have to review. The key players in early Roxy were the bass player Graham Simpson who Bryan admits that without him there would never have been a Roxy Music. Andrew Mackay (Sax and Oboe) , Phil Manzanera (Guitar) and Paul Thompson (Drums) were the other original members. Eno as I mentioned played synthesizer on the first two albums. He released various albums of his own after leaving Roxy and also produced Bowie and U2. Eddie Jobson replaced Eno but he was a far more accomplished musician on both keyboards and violin. Graham Simpson left after recording the first album having had a nervous breakdown and after that they never had a permanent bass player (as Bryan always kept it open for Graham but he never returned and sadly died a few years ago).

The best being Re-make Re-model, In Every Dreamhome a Heartache, Mother of Pearl, Amazon, Psalm, Pyjamarama and Out of the Blue (though they seem to have removed this one recently) All of them are played live and fantastically.

    An often overlooked, and very much underappreciated facet of this and many of Roxy's golden album tracks, is the relentless but very well thought out drum line...described 40 years ago in a popular music magazine as 'restrained, urgent drumming'. That description is absolutely correct! Every drum beat is meticulously placed, as are the other instruments...and like I said....it's often easy to overlook the relentless bass lines which hold it all together and provide a 'stage' for the other 'incidental' instruments/voices. This is also one of those classic Roxy tracks that very slowly builds up in tempo and involvement. Listen to it again with that in mind 👍

    I read the lyrics as a two part story: the first half seems to be an abstract evocation of a party, complete with girls and "powders" (Brian loved his cocaine). The second half is the regret, a melancholy reflection on unobtainable happiness ("the search for perfection" etc) It's kind of a medication on the futility of escapism and what really matters in life - ultimately, the love of his "mother of pearl", who was Jerry Hall in real life

    So pleased to hear a coherent review of Roxy. This is the music of my youth and I can remember the first time I heard and saw them. It was not an instant like as it was with Bowie or T Rex who were around back in the early 70s . It was a real shame Eno left and eventually after the 4th album I did too and followed Eno ‘s more experimental approach. I saw them live with Eno and it was an “experience”. Another vastly under rated band around at the same time were Cockney Rebel check out their first 2 albums.

    Mother of Pearl was an inspiration for the punk movement (have you a future? No, no, no).
    Brian Eno was replaced by Eddie Jobson (Curved Air, Mothers of Invention).
    Graham Simpson played bass on the first album, after that Roxy never had a bass playing member again (at least 'till their first break-up in '76) and always had guest players.
    I'm really a fan of the first 2 albums with a slightly declining interest in the next albums, with some exceptions (Mother of Pearl being one of them).
    When they reunited and made Manifesto, I lost interest all together after listening to the West Side (vinyl, ftw) of the album, too slick.
    In Every Dreamhome A Heartache, For Your Pleasure and Out Of The Blue are some songs I would recommend to you.

    Hey guys great reaction ! I subscribed to your channel pretty much based on your Roxy Music reactions. They're one of my favorite bands.....at least their first five albums. Everything from the self titled debut from 1972 up until and including the 'Siren' album from 1975. Unfortunately here in the U.S. they are mostly known just for the song 'Love Is The Drug' and for their very last album 'Avalon' from 1982 at which point they had become sort of easy listening adult contermporary music that imo is quite boring. It lacked the hard edge and experimental spirit that marked their earlier works. Songs I'd recommend are 'The Thrill of It All" 'Out of The Blue' 'In Every Dreamhome A Heartache' 'The Bogus Man' '2HB' 'Chance Meeting' 'Amazona' 'Prarie Rose' 'Casanova' "Both Ends Burning' 'Whirlwind'. Keep up the good work. Take care.
