The Dmax Touring (re)Build Series E03 || ThunderFab Canopy - Fitting, Weighing and Smoking it out!?

  • This episode we're back in the ThunderFab workshop.
    Everything has come back from the powder coaters and its looking so good. We remove the old canopy, bolt on the new canopy with the flares, toolboxes and light panels.
    It all gets wired up, spare wheel mounted and mudflaps are fitted.
    Both canopies are smoked out to replicate water/dust ingress and their both weighed - results were awesome!
    The boys have built a canopy that's stronger (engineered to handle my 110kg tinny on top), dust/water proof and yet still comes in LIGHTER than my old import.

    I wish my mechanic & all the other companies that have worked on my 4x4 would have done so with the same amount of precision, eye for detail and overall care & attention that these boyz seemingly did with yours. That’s what’s lacking in this country I reckon.
    Looks mint 👌

      I totally agree, so difficult to find a good fabby/mechanic/auto sparky that actually takes pride in their work and what they hand over. I'm still trying to find a mechanic with the same passion!

    Thanks for the update Cam and good decisions- I still went with the best of the Chinese canopies as I discovered they’re not all from the same factory - I paid under 3k for a 2.5m checker plate with full internal and external bracing, two doors, piano hinge and stand off legs from VIC - the welds are good and no stress cracks have appeared and yes there was some dust ingress but I’ve replaced the seals and adjusted the locks - this saving has allowed me to spend up on Redarc, Engel, Renogy and $1k lithium battery - local folk do extra metal work for me - John in SA

      Cheers mate, I'm biased but I reckon its the best canopy I've seen on the market yet (in terms of weight, design and finished build quality). They'd sort you out with freighting one over - but you'd be mad not to come over and make a holiday of it up the West Coast if you could! ;)

      2025 we're off on another trip, around Aus for the year.
      When I get back I'll smoke it out and run around the whole thing with a camera. Can't think of a better way to demonstrate the difference between a quality canopy and a cheap canopy - because by then it will be 4 years old, and done similar kms and terrain as the checkerplate one did before it fell apart.

    Great looking canopy wish this series was made about a year ago when i got my box made, you never hear of these smaller places due to poor advertising but they make some of the best stuff, its a shame tbh i would of gone with these guys had they been about. My point is these smaller fab companies are hard to find for the casual customer who doesnt know anyone in the industry. Question though, im no welder never will claim to be, but surely the welding could of looked better than the bolt heads all over the door skin?

    • @WildTouring
      @WildTouring  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm hoping I can help them to get their name out there, they do amazing work and deserve to make it!
      The first pair of doors they made for my canopy were welded. It was fiddly and time consuming for them to weld them in such a way that didn't heat warp or mark the outside of the skin. Bolting them was quicker (which means cheaper) and resulted in what we agreed was a better finish. We reckon it looks tough - but I know that's subjective!

    Those plastic hinges aren't the best when they sit in the sun all day 30° and you want to open and close, the rubber stretches and doesn't interlock good and causes issues.

    • @WildTouring
      @WildTouring  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They're new to me, and I was pretty unsure about them to begin with. Time will tell. But from what I'm reading and hearing they're widely used in freight and mining industry. They're rated for 100kgs (1m horizontal span), at temperatures between -40 to 50 degrees and 50,000 + cycles. Also UV stabilised.

    • @jasper287
      @jasper287 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WildTouring I have them on my custom made gull wings on my car they work great, just need to be cautious as it's the gas struts fighting when closing the door causes them to pull apart and not interlock correct (poor explanation I know) and it's only an issue when it's a summer sun day when the heat gets into it. Bit late now but they also do an aluminium version of that hinge it's a little bigger but the rubber flex joint is much thicker.

      It’s an unfair comparison when your not evaluated on the same criteria. The engineering of the locally manufactured product will be confirmed when it outlasts the imported by many seasons. You are also supporting local businesses and their families when you purchase locally. It is in my opinion a better option to invest in our own people as the flow on effect compounds far greater than the price paid.
