Brings back so many memories. I remember you being paraded at Wincanton race course after you had retired, you were only ment to canter past the stand but the jockey could not stop you, you flew, if you had been entered in to a race that day I think you may well have won!!
Nice video. I worked for D R C Elsworth many years ago and it is only now that i realise what an honour it was to have worked with and to have ridden this wonderful horse. wonderful memories and a few treasured photos. RIP Dessie...one in a million!
Desert Orchid the best racehorse that ever lived He always wore a heart on his sleeve I will never forget Dessies I used to watch every race as a child RIP Desert Orchid May your Hooves and spirit shudder the ground may your noble head make people smile A champion Grey a Herioc Son
Did you know Dessie was nearly put down in his first ever race as a 5 year old at Kempton in a novice hurdle..he fell at the last and was down for 15 minutes...they were about to put him down and he jumped up...incredible dont you reckon...the rest is history!!!!
The greatest,,,i still miss u now dessie...wish u could come back and show our top horses how its done again!...truly the greatest and u will never be forgotten
remembering a true superstar . who gave 100% in every ride , never cheated never lied , win or lose never cried , it was a pleasure to see your every stride , over hurdles round the bend affectionately known as dessie i loved you like a friend .R I P gone but never ever forgotten
Thanks Glenposh. In a funny way those still photos say as much about Dessie as all my videos of him do. What a priviledge to be around at the time that his unique blend of brilliance and courage lighted up our lives. We still miss you Dessie
Desert Orchid's Victor Chandler Chase victory over Panto Prince has recently been posted. This was arguably his greatest victory, giving away 22lbs to a top class chaser over a distance that was arguably by then too short for him. His tenacity to get up on the line was magnificent.
for me dessie the best ever!he could race over 2miles?3milles!3and half and the only race he didn't run in was the national?too precious to be risked but if he had done and won then he would probably have eclipesd even red rum?
dessie was truly brilliant a great horse, so many likewise ie red rum springs to mind and others, but the greatest horse in my eyes and yes iam of age lol was the one and only legend arkle for those younger look up arkle on tube read about him, he was a super horse like dessie he was never risked in grand national to precious, red rum won 3 nationals so most people see that and say red rum was greatest, but like i say arkle for me was the true greatest rip arkle n dessie n red rum great in different ways
We have delusions, we are selfish and stupid and destructive. Some have saving graces but as a whole, i much prefer various animals. Dessie was a marvel, and we are lucky he lived alongside us.
Depends on what you mean by greatest- the form book says not- but Dessie had such style and charisma. Arkle was an unstoppable machine; Dessie had almost human frailties- the slog through the mud in the CGC still GENUINELY moves me to tears.
A nice tribute to the most popular horse there has ever been. I doubt we'll get this response when Kauto Star or Kicking King go! I also think it's ironic that people are talking about the dangers of steeplechasing in a tribute to Desert Orchid: if all horses jumped like Dessie did, there wouldn't be a single fatality on the course!
Dessie would have almost certainly one five on the trot too - had it not been for the 'suicide run' in the 87? King George, where we had three front runners (included Dessie), none of whom wanted to be headed. Halfway round the back straight one fell and the other two were exhaused (Dessie being one)... if I remember rightly, a French horse won of all things!!!
There is no doubt that Desert Orchid was great. Comparing race horses that came from different era's is hard. Arkle probably won more races (including 3 Gold Cups) than any other. But I loved Dessie!
King George VI Chase at Kempton: great as Dessie was, I don't think he'd have done that well in the King George and Queen Elizabeth at Ascot on the flat lol ;-)
steepchaseing is dangerous i agee its a risk u hav 2 take doing it ma grandad lost a horse that broke its back when it fell i got realy atch 2 him and miss him loads but i no he enjouded doing it he allway had his ears pricked
i would not say he was the greatest racehorse ever otherwise you would be overlooking the 3 time grand national winner red rum i would say dessie was one of the greatest racehorses ever r.i.p dessie
+eddie jackson The general public took Dessie to their heart more than any other racehorse, his final race when falling, the cheer the crowd gave him just for finishing safely was amazing. He may not 'technically' have been the greatest racehorse ever, but his sheer determination to always give 100% caught the heart of a nation. RIP Dessie

big red is the best
No horse has matched Dessie for courage and character.
im afraid your wrong.... after the king george the other day Dessie is still rated 1Lb above Kauto Star 186 to 187 ...
Aldershots Finest kauto was rated 191,,,,,and has much as Dessie was a great race horse,,,he wouldn’t have came close to kauto,,
i would not say he was the greatest racehorse ever otherwise you would be overlooking the 3 time grand national winner red rum i would say dessie was one of the greatest racehorses ever r.i.p dessie
+Eddie Tait Latest news: Sprinter Sacre has precipitated Mill House off the Top 3.
