A genuine, heartfelt thank you to all involved who made this film. Desert Orchid was & forever will be a hero of mine. Such bravery, determination & will to win. A truly great horse. RIP Dessie.
Horses are such long living creatures and ponies even more so , they give you golden days , some of the best days in your life if you are privileged to own one , I had a grey mare , I lost her 2020 after 22 years , there will never be another .......these animals steal your heart forever
Glad to say I was there got 11/4 .what a roar after he finshed brought tears to the eyes. Saw Dessie run many times amazing races vs pegwell bay and panto prince but Cheltenham was just brilliant, what a horse.
This is a very moving tribute to Dessie who had everything and more It was very tragic what happened to 10 plus the racehorse they mentioned RIP Dessie gone but never ever forgotten Ten Plus was a phenomenal race horse when he was tragically injured it broke my heart
I remember the day dessie won, I was working and miss the race, after work I ran to the local bookie to see the result. DESSiE had won I was so happy that day, and went too collect my winning.DESSIE was a BIG part of my life and as a putter I always bet him , he had the heart of a LION that day and always gave100 percent win or lose. DESSIE NEVER FORGOTTEN ATFER ALL THESE YEARS!!! R.I.P HERO TO ALL
ONE OF THE BEST CHASERS I HAVE SEEN RACING. DESSIE KEPT US IN THIS GREAT SPORT. WHAT A HORSE? NEVER GAVE UP THE WILL TO WIN. WITH JAMIE OSBORNE UP PUNTERS NEVER HAD AN ANXIOUS MOMENT. CHEERS DESSIE! RIP
Charcoal Wally had Desert Orchid match for a while, He run up with Desert Orchid and upset him. I saw Desert Orchid in his first chase at Devon @ Exeter their were 4 Greys in that race. Charcoal Wally, Pridden Jimmy and Proper momet. He beat Charcoal Wally well that day.
A hard, deadly race. Dessie survived, and so many other races and fences, after that desperately worrying start to his career. Thank heavens. He was so brave and gutsy; when he looked beaten in this and a few other races he somehow won. I recommend Richard Burridge's book The Grey Horse: The True Story of Desert Orchid, which can be seen in the background in this video. A few times it had me choked up.
as well known in the uk as gazza in the late 80,s. his best performance was in 1990 when giving away 2 stone to the field in the irish grand national nd winning by 10 lengths with dunwoody on board. also the finest jumper of a fence ive ever seen...Legend!!!
There is a really good book on The Grey written by Richard Burridge. Never under-estimate how important to Dessie the very talented Colin Browne was. Simon took his chance and Hindsight Utd won the league again.
I've ordered that book, really looking forward to it- it's in the video in the background. Edit: it is a marvellous book that had me choked up a few times
I adored this horse simply because like red rum he knew he was good and wasn't shy in showing people he was good and like rummy he was an exceptional jumper and his attitude was like a little angry terrier biting at your trousers
Dessie was like Rocky, so much heart & determination, sometimes had to do things the hard way but one horse you could never count out, like he had a hatred of horses being infront of him.
Absolutely marvellous. BUT there were times when the music was way too much in the foreground. For example, Burridge is a quiet spoken chap, and when guitar riffs do their best to drown him it’s unfortunately intrusive.
I was 25 when Dessie won the Cheltenham Gold Cup, I started betting in the early 90s but love racing history. Shame to see Janice Coyle looking old, she was such a lovely girl back in the day... The music is depressing....
if a horse is supposedly unrideable always get the back checked out. It's amazing how many horses suffer from back problems. IT can be frightening to be carted by a horse you more or less have no control all you can hope for is the horse has sense. Yes but you said he had a back problem which inhibited his turning left but after it was fixed everything was fine. So for him to win the gold cup it proved he didn;t really mind going left.
HAVE A PICTURE OF HIM HANGING ON MY WALLS WITH RED RUM NIJINSKY ARKLE SEA THE STARS DANOLI VINTAGE CROP COMMANDER IN CHIEF NIJINSKY SIR IVOR THE MINSTREL GALILEO NEVER SAY DIE AND MANY MORE

Yes was kind of sad to hear Peter O’Sullevan mention Ten Plus fall at the beginning

What a lovely tribute
Really really excellent storytelling, thanks. [even with the somewhat intrusive piano-led soundtrack]
yes on both points - the piano is too loud to hear the dialogue, most off-putting.
So lucky to have had a cuddle with him 💕
Fantastic documentary....
The best and legend
just brilliant.

No horse since Desert Orchid has repeatedly and successfully conceded weight at the highest level. Fact.
Ceart. Nil ach ARKLE NIOS FEARR.

Would they do that now. I doubt that. Pumping out the water jump, then putting water back in the water jump, only in the uk.
Next year RTV should do a docu on 50 years since Nijinsky's Triple Crown
I led up Yahoo, didn't get asked on the video...!
I often wonder who would have won when both dessie and Mauro at there best would off crossed the line in front around 3 miles at Kempton?
Despise was the best
Wish I'd known he didn't like Cheltenham before I put a grand om him in1989 lol
Spoiled this great story with ad after ad lost count after ten
