Steve Perkins Me too. Must have been tough on Tom to come so close to achieving his dream so it was a wonderful gesture by him to congratulate Dessie on his win. True sportsmanship.
jibsa At the time a few people at work that had backed it were saying ten plus would have won but it was a beaten horse when it fell.I had backed desert orchid and i thought it was beat but as was often the case it fought back and pulled a bit extra out of the bag.
Forgive me for being a traditionalist old school man, I loved the old style cotton / woolen tops that some riders wore back then, it was different and seemed very equine.
Some great horses in this field the whole BBC coverage was different gravy in them days n one of my favourites horses was west tip who nearly got killed when hit by a lorry n went on to win the grand national wore his heart on his sleeve r.i.p horse hero 😰
My first Gold Cup. Arrived to find the fire brigade pumping water off the course and waiting for an announcement whether or not it would go ahead. Ground was like a bog. I’ve never heard a louder, longer cheer as Dessie battled from the last. Every neutral in the place was cheering him on. Great to see the whole race again. Shame about Ten Plus.
Desert orchid is beginning to get up as the race to the line there's a tremendous cheer from the crowd as desert orchid is going to win it desert orchid has. Won the gold cup yahoo is third charter party want that on my gravestone
Same here mate, was expecting yahoo to pull away after the last because of his liking for soft/ heavy ground, Dessie was all heart though, picked up £185 for 2nd though.
I backed Little Polveir in the National at similar odds due to the going, and won- yet i also backed Dessie despite the going, because i loved him. And the last horse i bet on was Romany King to place in first 2 in the National (i did have good luck!)
great race, I was there as a sixteen year old, can remember hats being thrown into the air as Dessie crossed the line. I backed Ten Plus and cried all the way home on the train when I heard of his sad demise
An equine fatality in any race always takes the gloss off the occasion, even in a race as great as this one. Initially I thought Ten Plus was OK as he galloped away until I saw his nearside hind leg.
I remember having yahoo this day, I’d took 33/1 had a score ew on, I thought I had it after the last, love Dessie though, and he wasn’t meant to like Cheltenham ffs lol.
The racing coverage in those days is far superior to Channel 4 Racing now. No dense coloured captions covering the action, or at the end when the winner has pulled up. Even when the betting results are given space is left so you can actually see the winning horse.
The irony of Golden Freeze and Carvills Hill Falling at Consecutive Fences, then running Loose Together, when Golden freeze was used to Stop carvills winning in that awful Tactic of 1992..
The people tell me arkle was invincible and greater than desert orchid....ok opinions differ but i will never see a braver horse than dessie and apart from dawn runs gold cup win ive never witnessed a day like it..
the bbc had a problem with their sound right after the race which meant viewers could not properly hear the tremendous reception after the race as they went into the winners enclosure
So ten plus was going to win In dreams..look back at 3 of those fell earlier all class horses.. No other horse was ever trained to win a race in such atrocious conditions stacked against him...heh only 3 finished.
Les Ten Plus was a grinder, a thorougher stayer, just because he was off the bridle it dosent mean he had no energy left, I personally think he might have!
@@dailystar1 desert orchid wasnt a cheltenham horse, yea got 1st 2nd gold cup but apart from ten plus the resr were bog standard hadicapers, was a class horse round kempton but the gold cup it won and 2nd field were bog standard handicapers
@@dailystar1 sadly we will never know but we have own opinions but jockey had rowed away on ten plus and by the time he came to the 3rd last (graveyard fence for many) he had emptied his tank. Dessie was amazing and stole hearts of many..rip both
I know you all say peter osullivan was a great commenter but there were times when he didn't see things when horses went down or were killed. That type of error seems to have vanished.
How could anyone hav known immediately that Ten Plus had went badly wrong? He jumped up & started running after a fall at the 3d last at the most important point of the race turning in .. As a commentator u see the leader fall n jump up in ur peripheral vision as ur concentrating on the new leader & anyone still with a chance in behind.
32 years ago and an event never been surpassed for me in racing, I was a massive Dessie fan, such a legend!
The reason I watch horse racing still makes me cry now
Love the touch right at the end of Tom Morgan patting Desert Orchid's neck.
Steve Perkins Me too. Must have been tough on Tom to come so close to achieving his dream so it was a wonderful gesture by him to congratulate Dessie on his win. True sportsmanship.
@@Formula1Madx I bet he said u get but what a horse
Desert Orchids beginning to get up! You don’t get emotional about that from the legendary Sir Peter and Dessie your not human.
I cry like a baby
Exactly , Peter and Dessie two legends.
I still do I was 9 then remember it well
Peter Bromley's commentary on this great race was even better imo
The greatest moment in racing history
Was Arkle and dawn run
😴😴😴😴😴😴
R.I.P. Ten Plus

Tom Morgan pat on Dessies Neck is a appreciation of a courageous Horse !!!!
He's saying you get but class
Brings tears to my eyes .
My favourite ever horse .
God bless x

Yes definitely 💯😁
Desert Orchid was a horse in a million. The biggest heart I've ever seen, so full of himself (in a good way). I miss him to this day.
Lucy Dennett Me, too. As I said in a previous e-mail, this is another of those great 'Gold Cup' stories.
I also miss Desert orchid his spirit was always with him rip beautiful boy your heart is strong
Wonderful horse
It's as if DO heard the roar of the crowd and said 'oh ok then'.
Just brilliant. One of my National Hunt favourites.
Happy days. I've just watched this video for the umpteenth time and it's now during covid 19 2020. Dessie is a legend. RIP. ❤️

One of the greatest horses of all time
Forever in my heart in a wave of emotion like there never was prior or since..

I watch this most days still sends shivers down my spine and eternally Imotional..
One of the greatest sporting moments! Ever!
Special! two bloody minded hearts beating as one! Horse & Rider would not give up!! Does the heart so good
dessie was a class act and he knew it !! good on him
the incomparable grey horse..bullying inferior horses just like he did on the gallops....there will never be another....the best ever!!!
Dessies jumping is great to watch flawless
Greatest day of my racing days x
still gives me tingles to my spine my fav horse of all time

Ballyhane creeping into the race when falling
In the circumstances, his best & bravest win under Simon
West Tip actually finished fifth having refused at the last and then continuing.
Did you see the way Dessie reacted to the crowd what a boy
Good Heavens I was screaming my heart out ......and it’s 2020 .......
I backed Yahoo at 33/1 so found it incredulous that my girlfriend was screaming for Dessie.

i led up Yahoo, did not have girlfriend bur i sure no what you mean

What a horse he was felt for yahoo though but the reason I watch this sport
Looking at all the comments about Dessie, nobody has mentioned Ten Plus, still leading three out. Until his fatal fall. Shame.
Yes forgotten about loved Kevin Mooney
The racing coverage in those days is far superior to Channel 4 Racing now. No dense coloured captions covering the action, or at the end when the winner has pulled up. Even when the betting results are given space is left so you can actually see the winning horse.
Also, no tracking camera car back in the day, so you can see the whole field, not really tight close ups of the leaders like we do now.
Old Dessie go son

Classic Horse Desi
I think the single dislike on the video is from Yahoo.
No, it will be some joyless, miserable tw@t.
It wasn’t even me and I backed yahoo lol, had 20 ew on him so still won a tidy few quid at 33s
Can't really say that
Requiescat in Pace, Ten Plus.
So sad about Ten plus
Must amazing race unforgettable
It's time to give up on horse racing. There is nowhere you can go from here.
Where was the crowds ?
the bbc had a problem with their sound right after the race which meant viewers could not properly hear the tremendous reception after the race as they went into the winners enclosure
If you mean it doesn't look hugely busy that's because the main grandstand is on the near side of the track.
Freezing their bollocks off , twas a cold day I remember, I backed yahoo ew.

Oh he saw it, he just was not going to upset people. Do not forget he was a great champion of horse safety.
Barbara Dyson he didn’t want to say ten plus had carked it in live commentary, that wouldn’t be very professional or popular.
