I saw girls with these animals on the streets of Akihabara, promoting these kind of cafés. I felt so sad about them. They looked uncomfortable and frightened of the lights and noises of the street
Mmm, I know what you mean. I always have really mixed emotions around having birds as pets. On the one hand, they’re super cool. On the other… I just can’t imagine what it would be like to be able to fly and spend your life confined to a cage.
@@TheActualJae I have two lovebirds and they can basically fly through the whole flat every day. It comes with a lot of cleaning and mindfulness where you place things they shouldn't get in contact with but hey - I think they're happy and that is all that counts to me.
@@TheActualJae birds can be great pets, if cared for well. they shouldn't stay in their cages all day, it should only be a sleeping spot. the rest of the day they should have the ability to fly and stretch their wings (am a bird owner, I love them very much :) )
@@TheActualJae not all birds spend their entire lives in cages. Many people tame them and over time bond to them and spend half the day flying around the house and sme birds can free flight, meaning that they can fly freely outside and come back to their owners when called. Yet, some owners keep their birds in cages all day, everyday. A bird's cage should only be a sleeping or resting spot. I mean i have a cockatiel who flies and walks around the house most of her day.
I rescued an owl chick when the tree it was nesting was cut down. They (I never found their gender) were able to fly but one of their feet was broken and mended badly so they weren't able to hunt well. I kept them until they were able to fly but the worry of their well being kept me from letting them fly outside (never had them in a cage). I should have at least tried to and before I decided they caught a terrible illness. Owls are super affectionate and smart, but loud sounds and bright lights are bad for them, which is the opposite of most human lifestyles, seeing them in such small cages is sad.
The concept of meeting owls in person is wonderful. The concept of selling them and breeding them is not. They are wild animals, not pets.
if they have been born in captivity they are not wild animals and never will be. so yeah they are pets tho they have bad conditions in their environment (small cages, too much sunlight, too many people).

I’m Japanese and had opportunities to volunteer at wildlife rescues in the U.S. There were strict protocols of handling owls, such as not making eye contacts, wearing camo to disguise our appearance, wearing gloves to prevent from germs and virus exposure, etc. These birds are not designed to just sit around and being pet in a confined space with bunch of other owls like pet animals. There are raptors that are supposed to fly, hunt and be territorial. It bleeds my heart watching that these people are ignorantly supporting the business/making the money with the sacrifice of owls’ well-being…It’s just another depressing reality of how our (Japanese) society isn’t ready for upgrading the animal rights status.

Im not a 100% sure about the owls actually- its probably because you were releasing them into the wild that you needed to keep them naturally scared of people.
Owls are much like cats when it comes to intelligence, they dont need to be outside, just like cats can be fine inside- they are quite dumb animals comparatively. Excellent hunters but not really needing cognitive stimulation.
Im more worried about the parrots, or for example keeping a crow as a pet- they will get bored really fast if you dont keep them very enriched with challenges.
I love your videos and I like the concept of the animal cafe. But this video made me sad because those cages are very very small for the parrots. Here in the UK we would consider it cruel to keep them in such small cages. They are highly intelligent creatures but also very active and need lots of space and activities for their mental and physical wellbeing. You can see some of these birds are feeling very stressed.
I went to an owl cafe (not this one) years ago in Japan and thought wow that's so cool. Once I get there and experience everything I felt so bad for the birds bc they are chained and clipped so they don't fly around. I felt morally ambiguous about the whole owl cafe concept
As a foreigner the best thing you can do is to not support these kind of places, let your family and close friends know, don't give them any sort of publicity and money, and pray one day Japanese government can finally illegalize owning owls or other exotic animals as pets.

Best thing is do NOT go to these cafes if you don’t agree with them. However, these animals aren’t abused due to strict animal cruelty laws in Japan. It’s a felony to abuse animals here. I’m sick of these westerners who come to Japan and don’t like something while you ignore your own. I’ve seen those Broiler chicken farms in the US they got no room to move. You know how many diseased poor conditioned cats and dogs in NY?! Millions more than Japan. Or you haven’t seen those animal planet shows of cat ladies that have 70 cats, that’s really cruel. None of that exists in Japan. Or you Brits forgot the fact that lions were getting hunted as a sport not too long ago on Africa. I mean westerners have no right to criticize especially the Japanese. Alaskan crab fishermen who abused their rights that there’re no more crabs. None of that BS is in Japan. Don’t like it? Don’t go there and don’t come to Japan. Japan isn’t the West and we aren’t about to be colonized by America. Europeans also should stop expecting every other country to be just like Europe. And their animal welfare isn’t that much better than that of the US which is the worst I have seen in the world among all developed countries.
I loved the space where the owl can move freely.
But the parrots and smaller birds looked often unhealthy, sometimes half plucked :(
I don´t know wether they are sick or have mental health issues because of a lack of partners and the ability to fly around freely :(

The gray parrot may have been stressed by something, and it could've been anything unrelated to the café. Or maybe it was a recent rescue. Unless they have a full background on it, we may never know, but many people own parrots that are healthy. Please, don't be so quick to judge without knowing the truth.

The smaller birds are most likely stressed because there are literal predators all around them that would 100% eat them if they had the chance. It's disgusting.
The birds are amazing and I tell myself I would love to have an owl, but the thought of birds and fish in captivity breaks my heart.

I feel bad for the birds here. I've done falconry outside and the birds had large cages, larger than my bedroom. They got to fly outside and were trained to come perch on our arms. In my opinion, it was a better experience for us and for the birds. These birds look cramped and stressed, birds are very sensitive and intelligent.
There's an owl cafè in my country too and it raised a lot of concerns because of the nocturnal aspect of a lot of the birds.
Tbh, i agree with those who raised such complains, because I don't want the animals to be too stressed (some in this video seemed to be) and unhealthy.
I like places that are a good environment for humans and animals to coexist peacefully.

P.s. i rescued some hedgehogs in the past, they are too cute for their own good. Great specimen. I love that they're there too!
But look at the stressful nibbles from the owl basically doing everything but bite the people to ask them to stop touching. It chills me to think what happened to the less social birds.

That's one of the reasons of why i don't particularly like this type of places.
The parrot at 4:02 especially, I'm not a parrot expert, but that doesn't look like a molt from the pictures from a quick search on molting. Looks like stressful ripping out of feathers. Not sure about the nibbles, I suppose it could just be preening that doesn't work on human hands.
I dont think the cafes are good for the birds... at least not in this form, maybe an aviary that rescued birds that had a cafe next to it would be fine.
Anyway what i was originally going to say is that not all owls are nocturnal most are something called cropuscular (spelling might be wrong). Witch means they are awake at dusk and dawn and sleep at night and midday. And some are even diurnal (a.k.a. up during the day)
So it would be important to check what kind of owl... not that it matters if their being kept in cramped conditions.

That was my first thought as well--I have a lot of concerns about the health and happiness of the parrots, but owls are nocturnal and forcing them to stay awake all day seems quite cruel. At the very least, they should limit the visiting hours to evening for the owls (though I wonder if maybe that is intentional as they may be more docile when sleepy.) There is a reason why owls are illegal to keep as pets in most developed nations.
While an outdoor aviary combined with a cafe could be a lovely concept, I doubt a for-profit business would ever put in that much effort. In the years I lived in Japan it was unfortunately very clear to me that concern for animal welfare is just not a very high priority for most people.
A bird means freedom of flight. I feel like crying when I see captive birds.

I’m worried about the birds. Especially the white one… usually plucked feathers is a sign of extreme stress :( these cages are too small for them. I love the concept of a bird cafe, but with domesticated bird species (parrots, cockatoos, love birds, etc) that have their own room to fly around in so that they are not stuck in small individual cages.
Birds are beautiful flying in the sky and in their habitat without having their legs tied ☹️

Having seen many of these birds in nature it hurts to see them in such an environment. Its a very sad life for these beautiful animals. Why can't we enjoy them without being cruel?
Some of them might be rescues and have no chance or never had a chance to live in the wild so being at a cafe where they are well taken care of might not be so bad as opposed to starving to death in the wild
@@myrtlesnow2397 That's true, life in the wild is not all sunshine and rainbows - but that doesn't mean keeping them in bad conditions is okay just because it's "safe".
These birds - especially the parrots are one of the smartest animals on Earth - they're literally smarter than dogs and rival Chimpanzees in intelligence. These animals are bored out their minds in those small cages or on those leashes. It's a literal prison for them.
I don't think keeping animals like that is always wrong though - it can be okay as long as are given enough space with enough things to do (entertainment) and companionship (be it human or a mate).
Plus look at some of the birds feathers.. they are losing them due to stress...

An owl flew by me the other day and it was beautiful, healthy, and free. It cost me nothing for the moment and I’m happy knowing it went on to do whatever it is owls like to do. 🦉

Probably without knowing, this busineses contribute to the trafficking of endangered species. For every cute bird that reaches Japan, ten die when captured or during travelling.
In another matter of thing, most of these animals are ment to fly, at night... not being perching under too bright lights inside a café. I have no problem with cat cafes, but... owls, birds, and other exotic animal cafes, I will not support them.

Very informative & nice video as always 🥰👍 The owls are very beautiful but I must tell you that the parrots in the cages are unwell😢 I grew up with birds my whole childhood and I see clear signs of stress and unhealth in these parrots. They take their feathers off when stressed and these cages are way too small 😭 Very sad to see, they should be flying free at least in a room. I hope this place get the information from someone, the parrots are not happy.
Japan is known for their very very tiny living spaces, only the owl are given the biggest space because they are not as sociable and barely move (its also because they are tethered). The Owls are raised to basically know that they get fed by customers and the owners at certain points of the day so they don't really feel the need to hunt.
Parrots on the other hand are constantly stressed, they are seeking entertainment and interactions all the time and can't handle being stuck in a small cage, or let them fly around freely to wander, they are very curious birds so they'll more or less likely escape or cause a mess by wandering.
Have to agree. It's great that people can see birds up close like this, but those creatures are being abused and neglected.

I was there today, the cafe is a lot smaller now and offers interaction with the birds primarily. There are no beverages anymore, but I really didn't mind. The birds were fun to play with and they climed all over me. Staff offered snacks for the birds for purchase. I got myself some sunflower seeds and the birds went NUTS for them! I had 8 parrots on me at the same time!
A really fun experience for any bird lover!
It's still absolutely unacceptable as to what they're doing to the birds.
@@beeboi0097 the birds had a whole big room for themselves to fly freely and do what they want. The biggest room in the whole establishment even. That's more than some people can offer in their own home. There are barely any cages now. It was clean, we had to sanitize our hands and shoes before entering and were under surveilance the whole time while interacting with the birds so nothing happens to them. They get interaction with other birds, be it the same kind or others, food and snacks whenever they want to, corners to retreat to if they want to be alone, entertainment with staff and customers. In all honesty, they have it pretty good.

I feel terrible for those parrots. I own parrots, some of them are rescued from situations like this where they were kept in tiny cages. The cockatoo is very stressed out and craving attention. I wish a rescue would come and take these parrots.
Yeah, also the owls sitting on a podium tethered to a tiny string seems like an awful way to live for them.
The parrots have plucked off a lot of their feathers, which is also a sign they aren't being properly cared for in the cafe. The spaces are too small for all these birds.

I was about to say this would be a wonderful idea with a few guidelines I typed below, then I realized I've had just as much enjoyment at a proper outdoor bird sanctuary and the brids would be much better off. But if they insist on doing this they must at least have
- Maximum of 10 birds so there are plenty to go around and can swap in and out to meet people
- 1 or 2 hours in the morning free flight before the store opens and another hour or two at night
- All of them were rescues so there's no incentive to breed them
- Cages at least 4x the size of the bird
I was going to say that plucked cockatoo may have been a rescue they were nursing and give them the benefit of the doubt but the fact that it's in a tiny cage doesn't bode well for the argument it isn't stressed. I'd love to go to a place like this but don't want to support the cramped conditions they are in. I'd rather go to a bird sanctuary where i've seen the same kinds of birds get massive enclosures all to themselves and frequent free fly time
This concept may be okay for smaller birds but it's much too small and cramped for owls and cockatoos. I really hope there are some behind the scenes stuff we aren't being shown but I'm seeing stuff on the surface that I'm concerned about
You’ll have to go to a zoo for that. I personally don’t like the cramped conditions either but space is a premium in Japan.
They can’t go on free flight unless you really intend for them to fly into a window in the city. So I can understand them working with whatever they have and that applies to most bird-owners in Japan.
I want some animal rescue to make a proper owl cafe now. One with happy animals and no breeding for profit.

@@RyLo18D If space is that much of a premium then they should not be keeping these large parrots. It's really that simple. Most of these birds were never designed to be in captivity in the first place and adapt very poorly to captivity without constant attention and care. A cockatoo would fly hundreds of miles a day in the wild and it's here locked up in a cage barely bigger than it is. This is blatantly unethical.

As beautiful as the birds are, in this video, I'm deeply disturbed to see these precious birds in captivity. -They do not belong to humans! They belong in their natural habitats. -As humans, we have a long way to go.

I agree, not good to encourage the poaching of owls. A rescue would be beautiful but this is just a sad pet store with sad birds.
I mean…owls most definitely shouldn’t be kept as pets, but parakeets or other brightly colored birds can’t exactly be released into the wild. A larger bird of prey would spot them in 2 seconds flat. This is exactly why the “releasing parakeets into the wild” trend is so problematic.

Aren’t owls nocturnal creatures? meaning, they sleep throughout the day and are active during the night? if so, then this café is detrimental for their health. I might be wrong though.

It’s solely on the people of said country to do the right thing, not us. It is immoral but the only things we can do is support the stores the are ethical and treat animals right.
I'm not sure about the owls however the parrots were awfully taken care of. The cages are tiny, diet isn't healthy and all in all just bad care. Please do not support industries like this!

The owls look well cared for, my concern are the parrots. I noticed 2-3 of them are bald in a lot of places like they pluck. The issue with plucking is even when the birds environment is corrected it can be hard to stop the behavior. They sure are cute though.

Regardless of the space those birds aren't in good hands. They clip the wings of the birds so they can't fly around and owls are nocturnal so they're completely ruining their normal routines. That's only with the owls not even mentioning the horrors with the parrots.

i went to a different owl cafe in tokyo in 2019, there weren't really that many places to sit at (and no dishes really, only one drink upon entrance) and it was sad seeing how one of the bigger owls started shaking when it was being held up for a photo with a tourist. they were cute but it left a bad taste in my mouth

These birds needs a bird aviary with the view of trees and nature and not locked up in a small cafe with unhealthy and restricted environment. Also, owls are nocturnal, those harsh lights have totally destroyed their inner clocks. The other birds are so stressed they are plucking out their feathers. No matter how novel these cafes are don't patronize them. These birds may not be physically abused or neglected but they are being used for profit and made to "work" at such unnatural conditions.

Heh, yeah I remember seeing the description of the restroom and had to laugh at the idiocy of the claim since all I saw was some pictures of some birds and a green paint job and a fancy, leaf-shaped chandelier. Seemed like quite an exaggeration but it seems like anything someone tries that's new will have hundreds if not thousands of things wrong with it.

And all they got left are photos instead of the live animals. Anyway, there's a difference between trying out something new that would benefit people, animals, places, the environment, etc and trying out something new to satisfy one's curiosity and for cheap thrills, even if it's under the guise that you're doing something good. If the sacrifice is higher than the good deed, for example these animals' quality of life in exchange for your money and for your once in a lifetime experience to see them in a cafe with you, then for me it's wrong in many levels. But that's just my opinion. Others may look at it differently.

The owls are beautiful. Their are over 300 species of owls. So many I've never heard of. I think they're beautiful creatures. I prefer to see them in their natural environment.
I'm going to say this, this type of cafe is not a good idea to run. You can tell a lot of these birds are not in good states, mentally and physically. Giving this place attention and calling it cute is disgusting. These birds are overly stressed and practically locked down to small pedestals.

And the owls usually come from traffic from another countries like Thailand where many of them die before of arriving to their destiny. In Frank Cuesta channel (an activist living in Thailand) he is rescuing those owls from the market and you should see how the poor things look... He´s always saying that they suffer thanks to those cafes and people keeping them as pets.
Just look at the birds, they are stressed: lights, people, sounds, the whole day. Owls are nocturne they have big eyes to see in the night, the light isn´t good for them. Those birds doesn´t live long there.

Because nature isn't cruel at all, and babies in the nest don't starve, or birds aren't eaten alive by owls lol

After watching this video... please don't missunderstand me... i am really happy that it's forbidden to open and run "Animal- Cafés " in germany. Its only allowed to bring your dog ( or cat) with you when you choose to sit outside. There are many wonderful "Biergarten" opening in spring/ summer where you can enjoy ice cold drinks, great food and have a great view into the wild and free living Birds. Really beautiful and thats where wild animals belong to.

Those are definitely either mistreated or neglected because one of those birds has really plucked their feathers which is a sign of anxiety or depression

The other thing that is kind of sad, owls are mostly nocturnal. I can only imagine being kept up all the time when your natural clock tells you to sleep.

It seems that red parrots like Ringo are very naughty because I also watch a TH-cam channel about a parrot named Gumi of the same type as this parrot and they are both looks so funny 😂😂😂

I clicked this because I thought it'd make me smile...But instead, as someone who has rescued and owned birds before, ALL of those birds need bigger cages. That cockatoo is exhibiting stress by feather plucking. Probably due to the small cage plus having to see new people all the time. And it is absolutely HORRIBLE that you're BREEDING and selling those majestic owls. They don't belong in cages. I understand that the ones there now are too tame to release but for God's sake don't keep breeding them it's beyond cruel. They should never be pets. It's also really sad for the smaller birds and animals that have to be in the vicinity of those predators who would normally eat them. It must be very stressful.
A comment says they sell to Zoos and such, so I can only imagine how the Zoo treats them... And this is Japan, they don't care about foreigner's opinions in most cases, only whether the video is sponsored that it helps gather clients or visitors. I don't think Japan has a nature preservation organization because they would be able to see the video and likely take action. Japan doesn't like the act of meddling in other's affairs internally, unless it's something at a societal-human level.
I love the owls getting sleepy when u scratch them. We have a cat cafe if it hasnt closed yet, here in Estonia. I like both traveling, hotel and different cafe videos you guys have made! Keep up the good job.
It's probably something like 'okay the bigger creature doesn't want to hurt me, I can work with this, I'll just relax for now' instead of 'let's snuggle, I'll dream about adventure with you'

Cat cafes have become a little more popular here in the States, but we don't have owl cafes that I know of. Poor Pute-Chan is stressed, that's why she plucks her feathers. She might not be thriving there. Either that, or they rescued her and brought her to the cafe. Either way, great video! I wish I could pet an owl.

Now I'm thinking I should keep my eyes open for a bird glove one of these days. Looks super awesome, and they've got a hedgehog too. And owl calls can be very soothing to some of the other animals sometimes when they've been having a hard time of late.
I thought of cat cafes where cats can roam and hide just as they please and are comfortable with. First I liked the video when I saw how relaxed the first owl reacted to being pet. And maybe it actually likes being pet. Then I saw that it was chained and could not move away anyway. And what a tiny little cord. 😕 The cages looked so small and the cockatoo looked like he had lost feathers. Gave me an uneasy feeling.

I wish the cafe was more like a huge aviary so they can fly around all they want, but I guess that would be so space consuming to be in the middle of a city. Maybe a bird cafe near the mountains would be possible since there are more land ^-^
i went to a similar cafe also in Japan when i was 7, it was all owls. there was a capybara in there too! the birds were very well taken care of.

I've owned two little birds before (budgies) and despite their size, they needed a pretty big cage. Those cages looked pretty small :(
If these animals are rescue, then what a great concept! visited many rescue petting zoo and sanctuary , a good thing.

This is pretty sad....i mean the birds are very cute but the environment seems highly unnatural and the owl room has a loud hum of an AC or something, which i can imagine would drive the owls crazy with their SUPER sensitive hearing (the most sensitive of any animal). The other birds don't look great either. Should be illegal to have them in this 'store' type environment. Poor guys.
It would be understandable if it's a owl cafe with only a few owls in dimly lit rooms, but this is Japan we are talking about. Cramped living spaces, noisy city environment, etc.
If it were rural Japan in a small town, then it'd make sense to have larger buildings to accommodate a owl cafe. But then you'd have little to no visitors. In Japanese culture, you have maybe types of cafe because there are a lot of people.

I would love that cafe! I once had a beautiful cockatiel, but she has passed away. She was hand raised and was such a sweetheart. She would give me birdie kisses and she liked head rubs. Thank you for sharing!

So many people saying it's cute. (And then also a minority who voice their concerns, luckily.) No, it is NOT cute. 😡 These cages are too small, and owls are nocturnal animals - they have to deal with people on masse on a daily basis. You can see how distressed some of these birds are, and bored because they can't fly or have a suitable environment. Parrots also do not pull their feathers out if they are kept the right way!! I've seen Japanese cat cafes which also act as an adoption place, and that's the ONLY place I would support because the people genuinely care + are trying to give pets a home.
It makes sense to have a remote location sheltering rescued animals for possibly adoption to the right clients, but not bred or showcase as part of a cafe/bar attraction.
