your videos are educational and inspirational. I just arrived home from prospecting gemstones in a North Carolina river..not at all sure what I have yet..I'll keep you posted Liz..thank you!
Liz & Wally, thanks so much for sharing all your wonderful videos! My 10 year old son and I thoroughly enjoy camping & prospecting in our spare time. Your guidance is superb, have a lovely week, warm regards - Dean & Tom ;-)
The greatest fun I seem to remember was finding geodes and then checking out what was inside them! Great video makes me want to get out prospecting again
francischeefilms Thanks for watching and commenting Francis. Glad you enjoyed the video. Hope you get the chance to get out there. Good luck and happy hunting, Liz
i watch them find smoky quarts amongst other precious rocks on The Weather Channel program about gem hunters. They are just above the tree line in Colorado. This hobby/profession,gold and gem hunting, gives me a new interest in the outdoors.
A lot of Mooralla geodes have a thin shell/wall; therefore making it easy to extract the crystals with a use of a tile snip or pliers. With geodes that have a thick shell/wall, I would advise using a wet saw to cut under the shaft of the crystal that needs extracting. Hope this helps.
Hay I really Enjoy your Channel it is pretty Awesome. I have got into geodes this past summer at doing street fairs I hope to continue doing this as a new hobbies I enjoy. A wonderful art form. sincerely your fan CiscoKid
Great video, I have been rock hunting for a long time. When I walk my French bulldog, we walk near light industrial businesses. Well they all have gravel accent landscaping. I have found now four or five geodes! And several thousand fossils and 30 or so petosky stones. I am in heaven. Thank you for posting this video. I have opened up one geode with a hammer and thought it was lucky I didn't smash it. It opened very nicely since there was a crack. :-)
Soaking in water with dish liquid. It just softens the crusted red dirt(iron bearing minerals) that's sitting on top of the crystals. I leave them soaking for a week at a time, then brushing/scrubbing it off. Not too keen in using chemicals to wash them.
That's so cool! Lol I love these smokies! I recently purchased geodes from Bolaños, Mun de Bolaños, Jalisco Mexico that contain amethyst! Geodes that contain full crystals have always amazed me!
Hi Amelia, You are asking a question that needs to be answered with an encyclopedia. :-) I'll just put it simply.... A Geode is a volcanic globular/rounded rock that is "hollow inside/with cavity lined with crystals" or other minerals. Geodes also comes in other shape as well and not just rounded. Agate is a variety of Chalcedony belonging to a large group of chemically similar minerals with quartz being the major mineral of the group. AKA translucent quartz. The extreme variance in the colour, structure, markings and large number of localities/places where agates were found, has contributed to the naming of different varieties. Cheers, Liz
I found a rock hiking in Maryland, it had a very small I mean like small dorm like inside the geode.. I almost didn't see it. I thought u could only find this stuff in certain states. I have to go back when I found that one. I am hoping there are more.

Very nice video, some of them are just thundereggs for the non-hollow ones. I should get to more Rock and Gem faires and shows soon. Also should someday gem or geode mining, who knows what earthly things I'll find next. Always enjoy what the Earth has to offer.
Yeah.... I can see that happening....NOT. He said, "It's more fun smashing things." I just don't tell him anymore when I find some good stuff. Thanks for watching. Cheers, Liz
Hi Liz n Wal, hope you guys are doing well. When you say " Soaking ", do you mean in just water ? or something else, and what does the soaking achieve ?
Your video is awesome! I found a geode looking thing full of small smoky quartz crystals, only some of them have perfect shape, colour was nice brown. What should I do with it? I would keep it, but maybe its worth selling... Any advise?

Hi Liz. I have been an amateur rock hound my entire life. I'm curious ... Do you Purchase most of your Geodes OR do you hunt for and Find your own Geodes (or even pay-to-pick) ? And finally, after you finish cutting your geodes etc, what do you do with them ? Do you sell them and/or other minerals/crystals etc. ? Thanks.
I too am an amateur rock hound like yourself Chris and only process what we find. I'm just keeping stock right now and will be selling some in the future. Thanks for watching and commenting. Good luck with your collection and Happy Hunting. Cheers, Liz
What is the difference between what you call crystals, precious stones, and diamonds? Some of those "crystals" I would have called a yellow diamond or a smokey diamond.
Diamonds themselves are crystals. Precious stones are stones that are considered 'rare', however the only thing that makes them rare is the cut that the jeweler applies to them. Crystals are natural forming rocks which may have some sort of metaphysical property. To sum it up, diamonds are a type of crystal with many variations, crystals are stones that have spent some time under or in earths crust forming, precious stones are the hand picked crystals that jewelers cut and facet specifically for the jewelry industry. Hope this helps
