    This is a very nice Christmas ornament. My wife, in particular, would love a few of these, because we have a good number of bird ornaments for our Christmas tree.
    Your design is appealing and it would be easy to play around with different woods, colors, and textures. Very nice.
    Thanks!

    Mike always enjoy watching your videos I'm just getting into woodturning at age 61 and turning from a wheelchair has made a few challenges but worth the effort thank you and look forward to your future videos. I seem to learn more each time about technique's of chisel manipulation and various chisels.

      Thanks, you too! Nice to have options. This one works well in demos where a drill press may not be available and lighter than a hand drill to carry.

    Last year I made some Angels following your inspiration. And some Snowmen, and Snowmams, and some trees where I purposely made the tapered section a series of rough edges. Angels finished in clear. The rest painted with acrylic. Took longer to paint than turn and sand! This years, more of the same, but adding a few bird McMansions.

    Mike -- I really like this style of birdhouse ornament. This is a fine example.
    A couple of comments: 1. For design variety, consider using a branch section (in spindle orientation) for making the roof. This allows the eves of the roof to be 'trimmed' in bark. I like the look the natural edged roof gives. It's not better than the roof used on the ornament made in the video, just different.
    2. It might be easier to drill the holes for the entrance and the perch before rounding the blank for the body. This avoids the blowout that sometimes occurs on the top edge of the hole when drilling into a finished surface. And, of course, it's easier to hold a square blank for drilling. The downsides are it requires you to layout the holes accurately (and mount the blank accurately after it's been drilled), or you'll end up with an oval shaped entrance hole. Also, it requires you to decide where the entrance will be before you even start to turn. Which, some might find limiting. However, if you're batching out several ornaments, I think this approach is faster and easier.

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      1. I do plan to do some NE roofs. I just have to get some branches. 2. Production wise, I agree. From esthetics, it is easier to get the best grain look for the front after turning. Life is full of tradeoffs for surre. Thanks for the tips which I am sure will be helpful to some of the viewers.

    Never made one with a bottom finial. But I really liked it. I have to make some more of these since I have given most of mine away. Thanks Mike and I will definitely be trying this.

      The finial is a bit more work but I like the design and plan to make a few more. You just have to love birdhouse ornaments for giving you so much chance to play with the designs.

    First time for me to see what you called a "crotch plate" for drilling. Seems to work good. I think I will make one. Maybe thread the end to put on the tailstock. Thanks for sharing.

    Mike what do you use for your brass rod to hold up the bird houses and Christmas ornaments. What is a good diameter of rod so it holds things up well but bends easy? Are they on your Amazon list cause I didn't see them? Thank you, Bill

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The brass rod is 1/8". Got a couple of rods from a club group buy several years ago. Not sure of the vendor. on Amazon search on brass rod 1/8

    Quite an elaborate little project, Mike; with nice result. But why the shop built round skew; was it just to hand? I cannot see advantage over a regular skew. Bernard.

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A 1/4" round skew is easier to maneuver in tight areas and for details where a 3/4" or larger skew would be unwieldy. I raely use a 1/2" skew as it is just too light for most purposes.

      Consider shaping a Christmas tree roof (green) with a red body. Along with a shaped white bird. Stands out and way different.

    At the start of the video with square block in the chuck why go through the trouble of a tenon? I would simply drill the mortice then tun it around to finish the top.

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am leary of expanding into a recess with thin walls like a box. Also I do not have jaws to fit a 1" hole. But there is more than one way. So do what works for you.

    • @oldgeezer1746
      @oldgeezer1746 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MikePeaceWoodturning But isn't that what you do, once you turn it around with the tenon, you drill a mortice and re-chuck with the mortice? Or am I confused on how you complete the top?

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, I was temporarily confused. I drill the 1/4" hole immediately after drilling the 1" hole because it is more likely to be drilled true. If you wait until you reverse chuck it using the small spigot jaws, the hole may not be perfectly centered. This shows up when you glue in the finial and it might appear crooked. It has happened when I forgot the sequence. Your luck may be different but a piece will often not run true upon rechucking.

  • @brianwaters8754
    @brianwaters8754 ปีที่แล้ว

    You say drill the hole ¾ inch deep or 44cm, but 44cm is about 18 inches. ¾ inch is approx 18mm.
