Very true. You have to set boundaries even with employers. Such as, I don't answer work related calls past 9 pm and weekends unless it is specially indicated in the job description. My point is, managing work-life balance is tricky. Some bosses will want to squeeze every ounce of energy from their employees to the point of burnout. Management doesn't care. You have to protect your mental health and sanity. If an employer wants extra work done, it costs extra. If you want cheese with you burger, it's extra. You have to value yourself in order for your employer to value you.

@@thegreatlakestruckerI agree with all of that absolutely 100%. I would add also that anytime that I was ever interviewing for a position, I was always keeping in mind that I was interviewing them as well. Just to make myself feel a little bit better, if I didn't really want the job and they were arrogant and snobby and acted like they were doing me a favor I would wait and once they offered it to me and then I would turn them down. Grateful that I was always able to stay employed. I was a very hard worker and God blessed me each step of the way to provide for me

    I’m 53.
Lost my Wife 6 months ago to cancer.
Splitting wood definitely takes out alot of frustration.
I split 8 cords this summer so far.
Trying to stay busy so I don’t go out of my mind.
Hardest thing I’ve ever been through.
We were together since the 9th grade and this really sucks beyond all imagination.
Hey, some advice, throw a tire on the ground and pit a couple of those log rounds inside the tire and you won’t be chasing the log when it falls and you’ll get a better swing with the log lower to the ground.
The larger the tire the better…you can fit more in there.
I like to jam pack mine full and they don’t barely move when they’re split.

What finally made me Break out of the society prison was when Bob Wells from, cheap RV living said “if you think about it you’re home so few hours because you’re always working… and when you’re not, you’re getting errands done. You’re basically just sleeping there. So most of the time your house is just an empty space. So basically every time you pay your rent or mortgage you’re paying for mostly empty space. I asked my husband to retire early. He did, and to this day, four years later, he thanks me for the idea. The next day we started minimizing and getting rid of everything that we didn’t need. Then we remodeled and sold our home because we had too much debt to rent it. The whole process of minimizing, remodeling, and selling our home, took about two years. We wanted true freedom. So instead of renting our home out, we paid off all our debt, jumped in our Honda CRV and Airbnbed for two months at a time across the nation. It was the most wild and exciting thing I have ever done in my life! We took our two elderly kitties and our teenage homeschooling daughter with us. Sometimes ya just need to make big changes and then embrace the adventure! It was truly an amazing journey and God was our pilot. Of course there were crazy moments, scary moments.… But with each challenge we pulled up our boot straps and kept moving. Since we’ve been settled, our daughter has been editing and producing wonderful videos of our whole adventure. Beautiful day and night hikes in the Mojave desert, a wild and crazy adventure at great Sand Dunes national Park, Niagara Falls, Grand Canyon, hiking fourteeners in the Rockies, enjoying Hot Springs in Ojo Caliente,
New Mexico, experiencing the giant redwoods, hiked Bigfoot territory in Washington and the Olympic peninsula, soaked in absolute beauty and wonder for two months on Oregon’s beautiful coast, watching orcas, seals and sea lions while searching for driftwood, agates and Japanese glass floats, we spent two months exploring Vancouver Island, British Columbia, and off roaded in South Dakota Badlands, searching and finding herds of Buffalo, pronghorn, wild donkeys, coyotes, and prairie dogs. Our daughter, trained and competed and Jiujitsu , making friends all over the country and British Columbia. All the sunsets, all the starry nights, all the wildlife and serene beauty of rivers, waterfalls, and the Pacific Northwest coast… all my childhood trauma was addressed and healed. We adopted our daughter as older parents so we started this journey with me at 51 and my husband 62. If you love travel and you want to see the country or even the world before you leave this earth then do whatever you have to do to do to make it real. The biggest lesson I learned, I cannot apply because it’s too late, but I can share it. Had I known how healing, how educational, inspiring and empowering it would be to travel and see our country and beyond… I would have not spent a single penny on any thing that I didn’t need in my lifetime. All of that money would’ve been saved, and put away to fund my travel and travel for my family. I would’ve probably found a way to live in my car when I was younger and put all that money away too. I would’ve been free much earlier if I had only known, how empowering it was going to be. The only reason why we are stationary now is so that our daughter could go to university… Look how perfect that was to follow God as our pilot! Being free from a mortgage, freed us from having to have a tiedown job, which made us able to settle near the university that our daughter would attend! With her being vision impaired, it eased our minds so much to move here early enough so she could get familiar with the campus and we are nearby. Once she’s too busy for us, lol… We will get a van and set off again, God willing! Another great piece of advice I found was from my husband himself. On our journey, when things got tough or a decision was hard to make, he always said, “be like water and take the path of least resistance…and do it always with faith in God’s plan for your life”

It's their loss! Unfortunately in our world today, those of us who give it 100% plus and care about doing the job correctly...Well, these days lots of companies will get rid of you. In today's world, the harder you work, the more dedicated you are the more expendable you are! It's like we are punished for doing our best every day. And those that just half a&& it are the "valued" employee. The harder you work and the better you are at the job makes us a threat to everyone else somehow!

I was laid off in January after 30 years. I’m still too young to retire, 57yrs old. I was told my position was eliminated in the States and moved to China. Overall they laid off 25% of our group. I should have seen it coming but I didn’t. The whole ordeal left me angry and depressed. Trust me when I say that the emotions will die down… they don’t go away but it does become easier to deal with it. I am still hunting for a job and its been tough but just keep plugging away. I worked a job that demanded about 50-55hrs a week and nightly calls with the team in China and Malaysia. It has truly been a relief now that I have been away from it. I wish you all the best!!

Tammy, ageism is a real problem for people that are older, it's reality, dear.
Go and get a job in the area that the cabin is in like working for a ski resort, or retail store at a resort, be around people you've never met before, keep busy until you find that niche job you want til you retire.
Don't keep the Condo in Denver, move into the cabin full time, take time to paint, art is very important to who you are, Don't work for a company that steals your soul and your extra time, set firm boundaries on your time so that you have you time to express who you truely are.
Most of all, be encouraged and be yourself. It's the only thing that works as we age.

When I lost my job I slipped into a deep depression and thought things couldn’t get any worse. My advice is to network, breathe and try to maintain a positive outlook. There’s always opportunity for good people. Also, enjoy your time off. I didn’t let myself enjoy the time because I was so fixated on getting a job. When employers want to get rid of well paid workers (translate, older people) they fabricate a reason for te lay off, to protect themselves legally. This is the reason it’s done, it has nothing to do with your performance. This is done routinely. That said, it’s also dishonest and incredibly cruel.

I'm an early gen x. I was raised with the browbeat of the boomer generation of company loyalty. What I learned was that there is no loyalty to the employee. You ARE immediately replaceable, even in a family business. As you said, you need to reinvent yourself every 4 years, that goes with career and jobs. I made the mistake of being comfortable after really innovating a company in the early 2000s. You must be constantly upskilling or own your own company. After 19 years, I was replaceable. Now in my late 50s I'm unemployable. Even going after jobs under my skill level. No one wants an overqualified older employee. Yourr a flight risk as soon as you find a better job, and its true. I'm either going to need to get really creative or buy a business.
I'm so glad when I had the salary I eliminated debt and accumulated a cash reserve. It's been 2 years now...

Tammy , thanks for this video, don’t give up 😁 in my life there have been 4 periods “work” . Three years of college (total waste) 4 years in the US Coastguard , that taught me mechanical skills I’ve used all my life , out of the service and went to work for VW for 15 years , a master mechanic . The dealer changed owners and I went to work construction with no experience , I learned to build houses , do electrical and plumbing and was there for 12 years , a housing bust shut that down and I went to work in a microbrewery and learned all about that . I was there about 12 years . After retirement I used all my skills to build my own little house completely by myself . With your abilities you should be able to find something worth while even if it is different . Keep your chin up and a smile on your face ❤️🙏🤗🎩

Same happened to me in my 50's, single mom doing great with a daughter in her senior yr . Devoted my working years, sacrificed, to only be discharged in a company merger. Took me 10 yrs to recover. I was blessed not to have had much debt at the time. Sold one of two homes, sold many possessions. Traveled about where work was available. Now in recovery, living as a minimalist, praying it doesn't happen again. 18 mo until full retirement. The kicker in all of this was the company offered an entry level job after years of struggling and all the loss...there was no going back for me. I retained my self respect ! You can do this ...

That's exactly what companies do. They lay you off, then sometime later offers a position with lower pay. I am loyal to no company and loyal to my family only, and good friends of course. I am tired of being used, pushed around, discarded when an unskilled lower paid new hire is considered more valuable. Good luck to you, glad you made it.

What a gift! I got laid off of 2 jobs over the years and in hindsight it was the best thing that happened to me. Time for you to grow, learn more about an industry and shape a job your way. Pare down, you'll feel less stress moving forward.

We can't control what happens to us. We can only control how we respond to it. Getting laid off doesn't mean you're a bad person, or a failure. Embrace your strengths, go easy on yourself as you would on a friend in the same situation. Look at it as a chance to find out what you really want to do, don't be afraid to get a temporary job to keep your savings. And remember, we define our worth, not others. We are not defined by our job, either. Stay strong, keep the faith, get on unemployment (you paid into it, might as well get paid from it), and keep plugging away. Things will work out, because they always do... we just don't know how.

So sorry to hear you are in a tough place right now. We just went through the exact same thing over the past year and although knowing things will eventually work out- in the thick of it it’s so hard! Trust that the universe is working with you and you will come out stronger. It’s absolutely fine to be angry. Let it out and we will be here for you! And WHEN things turn around for you - we will celebrate right along with you. Please keep sharing as you feel comfortable because it really is so very helpful to those who have gone through/are going thru/will go through a similar experience.

I recently lost a job I had for 14 years. My job was outsourced to underpaid workers overseas, whom I was forced to train before I left. Like you, I had worked crazy long hours and received top reviews every year. I found a new job pretty quickly (the job market is actually better than you think). I’m 61, and yes, there is agism, but you just need to be persistent in looking. Also like you, I have a lot of other challenges (disabled husband), but you will persevere!

I’ve just found your channel today. I lost my job twice in 2001. Yep laid off twice in the same year. That was a lot of stress. But I can tell you, it was good for me in hindsight. You sound like a very strong, independent woman. You will get thru this, and will come out even stronger. You are doing all the stuff you need to, right now. But u do need to take time for yourself. And cry if u need to. You don’t have to be “all positive.” Be angry. Throw stuff, split a ton of wood. You’ll feel better.

I managed to get through my entire working life without getting fired. During my profession years, I had good skill sets, but I know for sure that I only gave 110% when I had to (get the job done under pressure). But if it was possible to skate by, I totally did! Screw 'em. I retired at age 57. Not my concern anymore, and I could always tell there was no real loyalty from the corporations, so I knew to never give them too much of myself. People need to realize this.

Age. Employers aren't interested in your experience or how well you performed your job. It's all about money and being replaced by someone younger with less experience and less salary. You're not alone in this situation. I have a friend that was a major employee in a small aerospace company. She went to work one morning and was told her job is being terminated. She found out later she had an enemy in the plant that was a local and he's the one that got her fired. He was afraid of her because she was more intelligent in the business than he was and was scared for his job. She never found another job in aerospace even though she had a masters degree and 25 years experience in aerospace because of being fired on her record. You're an awesome lady and we wish you the best going forward and feel comfortable in believing you'll find another job.

This is because there are too many people & not enough work now that we are so technologically advanced. Humanity is going to have to change how we value a person‘s life. Right now we value a person based on work not on intellect & personal values. But soon most of the population will not have a job and society is going to be forced to reevaluate how people are valued. Finance is going to be completely restructured. So many people will not have jobs that there will be no way we can keep looking down on unemployed people as if they are “less than” employed people. In fact, it’s probably going to go completely the opposite way. Employed people are going to be looked down upon because they will only be in servile positions. All the exclusive positions will be entrepreneurial. Everyone will “work“ for themselves. It won’t be work in the same way we see it now. This shift is just getting started and it is the most painful part of the change that is coming. Change for humanity always goes slower than any of us would like it to. Several generations are going to have to come and go before this change gets any easier. But by the time the kids who are babies right now are hitting senior age, they will have no concept of the problems we as seniors have right now of remaining relevant and employed. I’ve already given up the idea of going back to work. It’s not just that I resent to be treated like garbage by children who can’t even count change from a cash register when the cash register tells them how much to give you back because they don’t even know what coins have what value… It’s the whole idea of a job shaving many years from my lifespan through the stress that they are going to put me through. It’s a far better thing I do to come to grips with isolation and keeping myself busy doing things I enjoy & finding a way to live off of my Social Security while we still have it. I’m not gonna spend any nights crying because I’m being bullied at work. I’m not gonna spend any nights crying because I keep getting fired at job after job based on my age. I don’t have to worry about taking time off of work when I have a medical problem rather than if I have a medical problem because when you’re over 60, it’s when… Not if. It’s about time Americans get used to the idea that we don’t have prison for poor people and they’re not gonna do anything but ruin your credit so why are you beating yourself up for any of it? Those super wealthy bozos in Washington on both sides have criminally cheated, and stolen, everything that made American life livable from us and they’re not giving it back. So it’s time to reevaluate what really makes us happy and what’s really important which should be each other and a peaceful life. Money and a job so you can have more things is not a recipe for success. It’s a recipe for disaster once you become a certain age. So before you hit that age, everyone needs to learn when it’s time to fold your hand and push away from the table and go home while you still have a little jingle in your pocket instead of continuing to gamble your retirement every day you go to a job that doesn’t appreciate you. So what! You’re not gonna get to take that month-long tour of Europe you always dreamed of. But in its place, you’re gonna get an entire extra decade of life they would’ve stolen from you through stressing you out and giving you cancer and taking you away from your children and grandchildren earlier than necessary. That’s the stuff that’s priceless. It’s time everybody just checks out of those corporate one percent slave drivers and tells them to shove it where the sun don’t shine. There’s a lot more things that are worth a lot more than money. ☮️

First time viewer. Thank you for your video and honesty. Get your anger out for sure, and this is YOUR platform so say what you need to say!! Lose viewers, if that’s what it takes! You don’t need people here who can’t handle truth. Even though our circumstances are somewhat different, they are so similar. After reading many of the posts here from viewers, one thing is certain: People haven’t been choosing jobs in a field they are passionate about. The only way to start over is to start over. Sell everything you can and make the very hardest decisions immediately. Don’t wait. Unload everything that causes you to have to work in the system for a company that doesn’t care about you, only their bottom line. Lastly, “multiple part-time jobs, IS the new success”! -Kim (p.s. DO NOT SELL YOUR HORSE!!!)

Sincerest sympathies- I was notified back in April that I was going to be laid off by November despite getting a stellar review by my boss. I was able to get another job within the company but it came at a cost where I had to relocate myself at my own expense and move from Kansas City to Baltimore. On top of that, those members of my old team were told that our jobs were being offshored to Ireland and those left behind are having to train the replacements, and then, my boss found a new job himself and basically said see you later. I’ve escaped layoffs over the last 25 years by changing jobs, and as I get older the change keeps getting harder. The takeaway unfortunately is that a lot of jobs just don’t last and we’re overheard and expense to the company, which sucks. I don’t know what the answer is other than all you can do is keep moving. This economy sucks and the job market sucks.

I just went through the same thing. Cooperate America sucks. Took me 6 months to find a something close to the money I needed. Much happier now. Hang in there and keep your head up.

Life wouldn’t be as interesting without challenges. I was laid off. I was in sales and was one of the top sales people. I went on a local tv station to talk about yoga and a week later I was laid off. They told it was a conflict of interest. I was advised to get a lawyer but the lawyer said companies can do what they want and don’t really need a reason. I am a yoga teacher. Been teaching for 30 years. If you need someone to talk to feel free to reach out. I do spiritual counseling. I know it sounds weird but it’s good for our spirits to just verbalizing things to someone who isn’t close to you. Don’t give up!

You just appeared on my feed, and just wanted to say, but i'm sure you are aware, that this first time you have been let go hurts because it's a shock. You gave it your all and sometimes crap like this happens due to company restructure, but disguised as a situation that's your fault according to them. You did your best, and there are better things coming for you, different. I'm happy you shared it, lot's of people going through similar. I change every 4 years or so too! I'm due one soon, but i'll endure through past experience. Stay strong.

I have learned that going beyond what's required for an employer really is a bad habit to get into. They come to expect it, they never compensate for it, and they react poorly on the occasions when you can't.
Just keep looking forward. I have never lost a job where I had not ended up better off.

Here;s your chance to think about what your true JOY is in life. Shrug off this event and move forward with what you love. This is my first time seeing one of your videos, but it spoke to me because my life feels like one constant challenge after another. Now, I'm 57 and am on the verge of living out my dream at a cabin in the mountains and guess what? I had a stroke and now my entire left side doesn't work like it used to without pain and I'm not sure I can live in a remote cabin and maintain it with my health now. BUT, I'm still going to try. You can do this! Edited to add: You have a wonderful smile and when you talked about living in a tent or hiking, it made me smile back. :)

The world over companies are losing dedicated caring employees for more on the bottom line. They will soon realise the only thing making the company work was peoples loyalty, turns out its worth nothing. I’ve learnt to change myself into a work robot, where I give 80 % at best, and a home life and hobbies that get my 100%. Always know your worth and value, and dont believe any employer who tells you otherwise. Age discrimination is very real, so is the need to have a detox from your last job before you move to the next.

    I felt this...!
My advice would be: Find multiple jobs doing the different things that you enjoy besides your main occupation.. (unless you want to go into business for yourself .. or consulting maybe?). Ask your intuition what you should do and write down the answers regardless of whether you like them or not. Then do it. lol Ur head is in the right place. watch this video again whenever you feel flustered . Best wishes on ur journey, we're all going through it. I loved your realness, this was kind of a relaxing video in a way... Very down to earth and real. Good vibes sent. Cheers to new adventures and happy chopping!
