Your description of depression is spot on. Their version of this song is so good, that it can give those who have or are suffering from depression the comfort in knowing they aren't alone. Unfortunately, it's a song too many people can identify with. But even more importantly, it can give those who don't/haven't suffered from it a tiny glimpse of what it feels like. It's a powerful verbal depiction of an emotion, and it grabs you from the first note.

    So….this is my personal
favorite cover they’ve ever done. Amazing Grace is a very very close 2nd. The dissonance with the harmonies, the FIVE PART harmony which is always a treat (and I love Kevin’s percussion, but it’s always special when he fills in those harmonies). That explosive bridge and then Kirstie and Matt closing out the song 🥰🥰🥰🥰. There’s nothing about this that isn’t gorgeous.

I know exactly where you're coming from. Both your personal experiences and your thoughts on Pentatonix. When I listen to them, although they're an A Capella group, what they do with their God given talent, can sound as great as if they have a full orchestra behind them! They're Amazing. I often think I''m listening to an angelic choir straight from Heaven.

I really loved your emotional reaction to this song and am so glad you are in a better place now. You mentioned not watching a video because you don’t care for a song, but remember PTX can make a song you can’t stand into a song that you really like (case in point is THE TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS. PTX actually had a lot of us liking this song!)

Having dealt with depression as well throughout my life- how you described the visuals I feel has to be the best interpretation of this performance. I have seen many reactions to this, and yours has touched me the most. Thank you for this.
Other PTX suggestions (just some I personally love) would include: the Popspring Concert 2016 (that includes 3 originals: Cracked, Can't Sleep Love, Water, and the Evolution of Michael Jackson), Come Along, Run to You, Standing By, Happy Now... if you haven't done those yet.
An offshoot of PTX would be Superfruit (Mitch & Scott) and their performance of "Rise" with Brian Justin Crum, Mario Jose & Mary Lambert is STUNNING!

Scott mentioned in interviews after this was released that they covered the Danny Darko version of the song. Tears for Fears' original version is a faster tempo and definitely a different vibe. PTX wall of sound at the end really emphasizes how overwhelming depression can be. The end with Kirstie and Matt felt like a pillow placed to protect you when you fall. Simply amazing.

Depression is a horrible thing. I suffered for many years with it, along with panic attacks.I tried to not let it show to others, but inside i was dying. Some that knew were good friends, others that knew would say shit like just snap out of it. I always felt like breaking both their legs and saying walk it off. Other songs for 'feels', I would suggest, Run to You (an original of theirs), the cover of Praying (I don't think there is a music video), and another original Thank You, on a Christmas Album, but not just about Christmas - especially after the last year we've all had! .... and just an FYI.... if you see a song they've covered that you think Meh, not really into that one, maybe give it a listen, I know I find their covers much better than the originals - they often take songs I wouldn't listen to and upgrade them completely! Not sure if you know of a song Gold, by Kiiara... they cover it amazingly... but you should see at least a little of the original to see just how great PTX (Mitch in this case) is with this song. Thank you for opening up regarding your depression - it means a lot to have this issue brought to the forefront.

I completely agree with heatherb. I to have fought depression all my life. I'm 58 now and have been suicidal since 8th or 9th grade. What makes a 14 year-old child Decide that The world would be better off without me Or that The only way to stop feeling the ick Is to kill myself. It's taken a long time for me to learn how to separate me from my disease, To figure out what my true thoughts are As Oppose to what the depression is saying. I completely honed in on the line isn't it a little funny isn't it a little sad the dreams on which I'm dying are the very best I've ever had. Hell isn't fire and brimstone devil and torture. Hell is an abyss without sensation or end. I have lived most of my life either in the abyss, Clawing my way out of the abyss or sitting right on the edge. a person who has dealt with depression understands Just what that means. Nietzsche says that if you stare into the Abyss the abyss stares back at you. Anton Chekhov says the role of the artist is not to answer questions But to Ask them. And that is what you so beautifully did. Your description of the figures moving in the background Resonated So much with me. When I am depressed I move through life I am not a part of life. I merely exist. Thank you for Doing the full reaction When it would have been easier for you to Scrap it and not do it At all. That is how we win the battle against depression. I saw just how Much The song affected you And that it put you right back into that time. When you were depressed. It was obvious to me By your body language and the emotional pain On your face. Thank you for showing your vulnerability And sharing that you too have had depression.that Makes it that much easier for me. And I in turn Will try to make it easier for the person behind me.

Ahhh Lesa reading this comment really touched me ! my eyes were welling up and to pause a couple times to compose myself..
First of all i am so happy that you fought, stayed strong and determined for so long. I cant imagine what it would have been like to have to deal with it in an era where it wasn't talked about and had so much stigma behind it.
Thank you for your kind words :) Being open and honest about it i think is the best way to overcome it but also help others. I talk about it because it helps me process and moved forward but also so others that are struggling can see that is something achievable.
Giving up was an option and tried to permanently give up one day because i didn't want to fight it anymore and was sick of hiding myself from everyone. Thankfully i was gifted a second chance.
I hope your doing well and your happy !!

I completely understand your feelings about this song and their performance of it. Before I requested you react to someone, I checked to see if you had, someone that can pull at your heart with incredible talent and an overall incredible person is Dimash. With a 6+ octave range, sings in 12 languages, diversity from opera to rap, and a true heart of gold. I am requesting that you listen and react to him since you react to nightwish and Pentatonix, in my opinion this type of music is raw, meaning no way to cover imperfections, just the voice. He will amaze, make you question what you thought was possible with a human voice, entertain, and completely mesmerize, promise ❤️

I must agree with you on most of your points. I've never been a fan of this song but when Pentatonix performs "Mad World" you have to just let it flow and it just flows through you and fills you up. Great commentary. It's also good to hear from someone who has been through the same emotions that I have. Once you've been there, you can just feel similar emotions .
There are different levels of depression but the level I feel in this song is the type that just makes breathing painful. I don't wish that on anyone but I feel that YOU know that level of need. May God keep you strong and watch over you. It was my church family that pulled me out of my depression and I ain't going back.

Hey, thanks for a great reaction.
first of, im a pentaholic and has been since they competed in the sing-off and love watching first reaction vids from people experiencing PTX for the first time. obviously came across yours and loved it so had to see if you had made more and funny enough ended up here. For me its surreal the way you are expressing and trying to explain what you went through, i sooooo get it, i almost feel like you are telling my story, so big thanks for being open about it and sharing, huge props and respect. "tragic beauty" perfect description. For me this song hit me in the feels so hard the first time i heard it, and yes i might have cried a little bit hehe. It took me back those 8-9 years ish, but from a different angle, with some sort of weird joy, putting my past into feels, with emphesis on past, making me realise how i felt then and how i am feeling now :D sorry for what appears to almost be an essay, just got so emotional and with the feels hearing someone elses story, that i can relate to so much. But mostly to give props and huge respect for, on such a huge platform, to share your struggles in a world where facade, walls and masks apparently is a huge thing because people are afraid to be voulnerable. HUGS

Thank you for sharing your honest reaction. Many people have times of depression, and you learn over the years that they come and go. It's strange that we are most strong when we are the least strong, and yet ask for help. Another one to check out - PTX Light in the Hallway (link: th-cam.com/video/uhUhFVCIxgo/w-d-xo.html ). The lead on Light in the Hallway was sung by their prior bass, Avi Kaplan, and it is really special.

Interpretation of a song like this is very open. What is causes you to feel is right for you. Unlike a song like Happy where there is no interpretation needed. This song was originally by Tears for Fears when I was a teen and yeah, it tore right through my soul...this version is a little more evocative.

Been down that low...it was a long hard struggle to get back up. With the help of my psychologist took back my power over my own life and kicked the asshat I gave my power to to the curb figuretively and literally...hardest but most rewarding 17 months I went through.

I have watched all your vids on Pentatonix. I am still waiting on your reaction video on "Imagine" by Pentatonix. Please, please, do this. Also, I really, really relate to your self-revelations on this one. Depression, anxiety, panic...they are all friends of mine. I am doing a good job with them, but it is still a daily, sometimes, moment-to-moment battle. Thank you.

I don’t know how you feel about James Arthur, but I adore him and would love to hear your reaction to lots of his songs…to start, the acoustic versions of Trainwreck and Empty Space, as well as Recovery!

I hope you get this message. I want to give you a big hug. It does get better if you stay strong. I’m 61 and have been to hell and back. I’m here and alive. I still have my moments, but then we all have burdens that we carry with us. I hope this finds you feeling better.

It's probably pretty unlikely that you would see this comment after so long, but after hearing you talk at the end, I think you would really connect with Quarter Past Four and The First Place I Go (two of Avi Kaplan's solo songs which deal with the same things you were talking about). I feel kind of guilty recommending Avi music on a post-Avi Pentatonix song, but I can't ignore the voice telling me to recommend them.

Thank you for speaking out about depression!
However, you made a comment early in the video, how you may have passed on a song because you didn't like it? PLEASE DON'T do that! Just because you don't like an original song you are doing your self a disservice by not listening to the PTX cover. As seen in other comment sections, PTX doesn't due covers, they do upgrades! There a several songs that I can't stand the original but love the PTX upgrade.

Jordan, anytime you need a hug, come to DC, USA. Because hugs work both ways. If I'm hugging you, you're hugging me. Ok, I've gone this wormhole until 2.30 in the morning. Nite nite.

If you have the capacity, I’ve seen where some reactors get around the problem of the copyright by putting sparkles over the video or misting portions of the video so it’s “different enough” to play longer portions before stopping to react.

Now to pick up your spirit, if you haven’t already, try their 90’s Dance Medley. Not to make light of your feelings and opening up about your depressive periods, I’ve had my own where I was in such of a I don’t care period it was hard to get out of bed. My saving Grace was if something happened to me, especially by my own hand, my parents would have been devastated. I could not do that to them, so I pushed myself and started helping others that were worse off than I. Not so much mentally, but needing help in situations where I could listen to their problems. Most of the time they had the answers themselves but were too close to their problem to see clearly. Like not seeing the forest for all the trees around them.
