The oil pan nor the pick up tube need to be removed to replace the oil pump on the '97 Tercel 5E-FE engine. The rotor + ring protrude out of the oil pump housing, or into the engine block, by only 3mm. The pick up tube attaches several inches away from the oil pump.
So "heavymechanic2" in reading all the comments did you have to go back and replace the O-Ring too or did your seal replacement do the job. I kind of want to do this job once and just seal replacement is easy but getting involved to pull the pan and everything else gets to be a PIA. But it's a real good little car and worth the time but I would take you suggestions here. Thanks.
I had to replace the oil pump gasket, it was cooked. I did this like a year later. Be sure to get the OEM O-Ring because the aftermarket part does not fit and will not stay in place during assembly. same issue with some water pumps that use an o-ring gasket.
Hey Heavymechanic2, great video. I have the same engine in my '96 tercel. I'm facing some oil leak troubles right now too. So was just the oil pump seal your main leak? And did you just change the lip seal, no removing the whole oil pump assembly? thanks.
+Matthew Do Couto I just changed the lip seal and there is still some leakage from the rubber ring on the back side. Its like a major job to remove the oil pan and strip down the front side of the engine just to replace a rubber ring... There is a product called Oil Saver by LiquiMoly sold on Amazon that might work to stop your oil leak. This worked great on my Mercedes when the front crank seal was slinging oil on the drive belt. A year later, you would never know it was leaking. From what I read, the difference in the oil pump from early to late model is the groove is either cut in the pump body or the block side. If you replace the o-ring, it would be best to use OEM to avoid problems with low-quality materials.
Hello. I have a Toyota Rav4, 1997. It consumed a lot of oil, more than 2kg per 1000km. I had the valves, seals and rings inside the engine replaced, I just had it back, drove 500km, and it still exhaust a lot of blueish smoke, and consumes oil. Could it be that the mechanics replaced the parts wrong? Could it be from something else? Any idea would be much appreciated.
+Tj Walker Heat the nut, its full of sealant and hold the pulley with a spanner wrench. I made a spanner tool for this job with some bolts and flat metal.. I never removed the oil pump because it requires a lot of work to remove the oil pan, pick-up tube and the front member of the engine.
The cam and crank use the same seal, the oil pump is tricky to replace. There is a rubber seal under the oil pump that gets hard and leaks, this requires removing the oil pan.. 2-seals plus the oil pump.

I believe i have the same problem on my wife Toyota Tercel 96.

How did you clean it

Thanks for the advice and I'll follow your recommendations. Thanks again for the video.

Your heat shield on your exhaust manifold might be gone... or your exhaust manifold might be messed up or your O2 sensors are not OEM.
great info
What are all the tools necessary to properly so this
Think I have the same issue .
how did u get the oil pump sprocket off? did u take the pump off?
