So why not just measure the wood stacked to know exactly how much wood you’re selling? I’m a believer in just dumping off the conveyor but you still seam unsure of yourself about it being a true face cord. Stack it and find out is my suggestion. Chuck
I think my unsureness was more me being surprised it was so much wood even when stacked! As I mentioned one of my full small 275g totes stacks out to fill a standard 4’x8’ wood rack easily, so the fact that this stacked up to be more than that I’m confident in the amount! Thanks for watching!

Great video Jake. I did a similar video about a year ago. If I ever get a conveyor I’m going to loose stack right into my totes. Substantial time saver plus I’m sure they dry quicker with the looser air flow
Those are 330 gallon totes. If you look up the gallon to cubic foot conversion you will see 1 gallon = .133681 cubic feet. So 330 gallons = 44.1146 cubic feet. So since you stacked it and are just shy of full I would say your VERY close to 1/3 of a cord. I have about 50 of the 330 gallon totes and fill them right from the conveyor as well and I call them 1/3 of a crod.
Glad I’m on the right track! You’ll see in the next video we start manipulating the wood a little bit as they fill to ensure we fit the most in we can off the conveyor.

Next experiment stack one and conveyor load one and let them sit for 6 months and compare moisture content. Im all about not having to stack if it doesn't affect the end product, but im not convinced yet.
If anything I think this method would allow more airflow, I have stacked totes and these loose filled ones. Remind me in 6 months and I’ll compare moisture 😂
No I don’t deliver in the totes unless it’s a neighbor I can drive the tractor to. The totes are just used on my end as a easy way to move the the wood around and measure my deliveries.

Did Jake just say nobody likes to stack??? HEY!!!! Jake I love stacking wood. When I was a little boy not long ago about 8 years old my Father would have me stacking wood in full cords not face cords. My job was to stack the wood so that it does not fall. After I stack it my dad would come check it out and knock it over then say stack it again this time do it right. I would then restack it and tell my Dad it was done he would come over check it out and knock it over and tell me son I said do it right. After stacking a few times you learn to do it right . By the time I was 10 nothing my Dad could do to knock over the stacks and the reason he did this was to teach me how to stack so no one would get hurt after it was stacked. But what I did with out telling my dad was I was also stacking wood for my neighbor and he was teaching me how to stack . His way of teaching me was fun. Stacking wood is like putting a puzzle together. Every piece has it's place you have to find that place look over the stack look at the pieces of wood plan ahead know what your move is going to be if you have an odd piece use the small pieces that you have left on the ground to level out and make it a tight fit.
Hmmmmmmm, a cord of firewood is 4x4x8’ well stacked. If your large totes are 4x4x4’ then 2 will equal 1 cord. You can always use 1 small tote with 2 big ones for skeptical customers and call that 1 cord. That might be the way to attract more long time customers too.
No one needs to guess what part of a cord it is. IBC totes are barely under 4x4x4 feet which by definition is a 1/2 cord. Of course you didn't fill it quite to the top so you're a little under that so it's 1/3rd of a cord
Far more important would be to know how much wood is in the tote when the wood is level with the top. Filling to this level would allow you to stack the totes. You're going to be using far more totes - stacking the totes two high would free up space.
I don’t stack the totes due to my tractor capacities and how they look when stacked. As I showed in this video, loose filling them really doesn’t use more totes compared to stacking in them.
Seems to be the trend not stacking Personally it looks better stacked and I think it dries better and it looks better on the eye than just thrown in if I was buying it I want to see it stacked It’s your wood thanks for the video 👍

Na drys way better thrown in so more air can circulate, all wood here is sold thrown with obvious gaps filled, I top it up a bit at the top also ,nothing looks worse than a measurement that's under
Dumping your split firewood into a tote vs stacking it in a tote is a great time saving idea. However, you'll have to pick-up a gym membership to offset the exercise you'll be missing out on.
If you really want to get a perfect comparison, make a rack that is 4ft high, 8ft long and 16inches deep. A true face cord. Stack it full, then stack in in a tote to see if it fits. Then you will know for sure and no one can argue. Even filling the center up, it still looks short to me. I use ibc totes too, and since the measurements are odd, its a trick to calculate their exact volume. When i get back to splitting again and have enough pieces exactly 16 inches long, i am planning to settle my curiosity. I am also building a rack for my 3pt that is sizwd for a face cord of splits or rounds if i am cutting in the woods. It would be alot easier if the totes were actually 4x4x4 inside, but that would be too easy.😂
Metric measurements, good for us in New Zealand selling a mtr of wood ,thrown with obvious gaps filled up ,not a trailer load ? Umm how big is that trailer?? ,never seen the high totes here ,winter here now so fire every night
I tried this and no way does it stack up to one face cord. I think you should try it again and make sure your customers are not getting the short end of the face cord.
I have just over 200 of the smaller totes and I am getting ready to cut the sides out. I go through about 80 per year in my wood boiler that I have been throwing the wood in. I hate climbing inside to get the wood out of the bottom. My worry with dumping them is I don't know how long they will be able to take that abuse. I try to be careful but I end up bending or breaking a few each time I do it. Rotating forks would be nice but I think I might end up trying the log-lift bags to save time and stacking.
Whether you cut the totes or not, practice dumping them when empty. Much less risk or breaking them because there’s no weight. In my opinion it’s easier to dump with the weight of the wood.
Too bad you couldn't hire an intern to stack right off the conveyor for a flat rate. Got any high school students around? They only stack. No running of machines.
The 275s stacked hold 1/3 of a Cord. The 330s stacked hold a little more. Should take around 4 of the 275s loose to make a Cord. Mabey 3 of the 330s loose for a cord.
In Australia we mainly sell wood by the kilo/pound... You could easily tell with a forklift with a weight gauge if it was a face cord ... Allowing for dryness of the wood a bit
I think I will continue to stack all the totes I have with the cutouts in them because they wouldn’t hold as much. But moving forward I will be filling the new totes off the conveyor.
I have learned alot from my firewood guy he stacks me 2 of those tote u have has to be the 6 bar ones and took a measuring tape and showed me each one makes half cord has been in cutting and selling for over 10 years have people drive 6 hours to buy from him and that cut at 18in long pieces

Hey there, thanks for watching! I get all my logs from my jobs, I do tree work for a living so I cherry pick out the good ones and bring them back. I also get paid on both ends of the logs which helps. If you are just starting out look to start building a relationship with a tree service to source quality logs from. For selling the wood stick to small quantity high profit margin “specialized” wood like bundles, bbq, pizza oven, etc.
I’d be willing to bet that if you loose filled the totes and took the time to try and flatten everything out like I do and then really hump it up at the top you could fill it to a full 1/3 or pretty damn close in a small tote.
I’ve been curios why people using conveyors don’t dump directly into their totes. Maybe just charge a little less if it’s not a true face cord. I understand stacking for appearance if you’re going to display it, or like me, you throw splits to the side then stack later. Good experiment in time/money savings.

It would’ve been interesting to see you put 2 totes 8’ apart & pile it 4’ high between the totes to see if you get a full face cord. It’s really the only way you would know if you have a full face cord in one tote. Great video. TY for sharing.

Now, the only way to know exactly, or as close to exactly as you can, would be to set up a full ⅓ cord, then stack in the cage to see just what you have. Hope that helps...
Save what you cut out of the side to make a replaceable gate. I take one of the top bars, (on top of bladder) and electrical tape it to the section i cut out, then insrt inside, and wire tie, or paracord tie it at top so it can be removed when you unload.
One thing to consider is the appearance of your product. If you are delivering your IBC totes to a customer, then having it neatly stacked is well worth the time (if you can charge a bit extra for those). I am sure you've seen the new giant pallet bins that Chris at In The Woodyard is now using in his new woodyard. He just hand tosses those into there from his dump trailer. He will measure it out when he goes to deliver it to his customers. Another channel I watch (Foxfire Projects) is using the log-lift face cord firewood bags and fills those directly off his conveyor. He set those on a pallet and moves those around with his tractor and FEL.
I would’ve bet money that it wouldn’t have stacked that high. Although you were considerably over the top heaped up, I was still surprised how much it was stacked. I can see that it will be a great time saver. The next mission is how to modify the totes to have a removable panel to make them dump easier. Time for some creative engineering!
I like the tote idea of just splitting into it. If you feel uncomfortable when you go to deliver, could pull more splits out of another tote. Stay Hydrated and Have a Safe Day
If you cut the top and bottom out of the bladder and slid it up half way and wired it to the cage it would add two feet to the tote and you wouldn't have to worry out the wood falling out
I think splitting into the tote is a winner. I would say do a test to find out how much loose into a tote will equal a facecord so nobody gets ripped off. Great video as always.
I use the 275 gallon totes, because that is what I can get. But when I stack it off into a store bought wood rack, I always have more then what will fit in the rack. So, the bigger 330 gallon totes will hold about 20% more volume therefore cordage of wood, I'd say about one rung lower on the larger totes is the same as the smaller totes. an easy measurement will tell that. I do like the straight dump into the larger tote then you might need to make your lids be a pyramid from the batters to cover them but much less manual labor to get it done and still work and look neat / clean.
Glad to hear you agree! I find the pyramid covers to be extremely unappealing to the eye. I think I’m just not going to cover them and let nature do it’s thing.
@@DudeRanchDIY I don't cover mine until I bring the tote to the house ready to use the wood. I have several covers for my totes, but only really use about 10 of them. Through the spring summer and early fall, I let teh sun hit all sides possible. I cover later in the fall for the ones that I know I will be burning for myself. By then I have made the few deliveries I do and they are dumped into my dump trailer. By the way, when dumping - so that you don't bend the bottom rail of the totes, try getting the forks under the rail and flip on it's side - then forks under the bottom of the tote again. The is not a chance for the torque to bend because there is not anything to pinch on from gravity.
At the moment I have 4 cords of bundle grade wood stacked in totes so I’m set for a while. When I need more I would either separate it as I’m splitting or convey it into the dump trailer like I used to.

All of the small totes I have already have the cut out side in them so those will continue to be stacked. I think from here on out all the new totes I get I’m going to leave whole and just fill loosely.

Jake will you do away with the weather bladder tops if you decide to go this route? I have seen some people cut the bladders diagonally to make two cone looking tops which would probably fit over the excess wood on top.🔥🪵🇺🇸
I probably won’t cover these loose stacked ones, I’ll continue to cover the stacked totes. The big cone diagonal tops are hideous in my opinion. Big producers don’t cover their bulk piles, I think these totes would shed the water pretty well and are up off the ground.

It would take a lot of time to do that to each new basket that comes in.

Save what you cut out of the side to make a replaceable gate. I take one of the top bars, (on top of bladder) and electrical tape it to the section i cut out, then insrt inside, and wire tie, or paracord tie it at top so it can be removed when you unload.

One thing to consider is the appearance of your product. If you are delivering your IBC totes to a customer, then having it neatly stacked is well worth the time (if you can charge a bit extra for those). I am sure you've seen the new giant pallet bins that Chris at In The Woodyard is now using in his new woodyard. He just hand tosses those into there from his dump trailer. He will measure it out when he goes to deliver it to his customers. Another channel I watch (Foxfire Projects) is using the log-lift face cord firewood bags and fills those directly off his conveyor. He set those on a pallet and moves those around with his tractor and FEL.
The only totes I deliver are to neighbors that buy firewood from me. All the rest get dumped into the truck so appearance in the tote doesn’t matter!
I would’ve bet money that it wouldn’t have stacked that high. Although you were considerably over the top heaped up, I was still surprised how much it was stacked. I can see that it will be a great time saver. The next mission is how to modify the totes to have a removable panel to make them dump easier. Time for some creative engineering!

It’s taking some time to get over. I don’t like seeing the unstacked totes in my long row of stacked ones. Might need to segregate.
I dry in loose stacks on pallets then put into totes.

If you cut the top and bottom out of the bladder and slid it up half way and wired it to the cage it would add two feet to the tote and you wouldn't have to worry out the wood falling out
My friend does this, but he only has 5 or so totes. It’s a lot of work for as many as I have.
I think splitting into the tote is a winner. I would say do a test to find out how much loose into a tote will equal a facecord so nobody gets ripped off. Great video as always.
Yep I might take the time and stack a loose tote into an actual 4x8 rack for everyone to see

I use the 275 gallon totes, because that is what I can get. But when I stack it off into a store bought wood rack, I always have more then what will fit in the rack. So, the bigger 330 gallon totes will hold about 20% more volume therefore cordage of wood, I'd say about one rung lower on the larger totes is the same as the smaller totes. an easy measurement will tell that. I do like the straight dump into the larger tote then you might need to make your lids be a pyramid from the batters to cover them but much less manual labor to get it done and still work and look neat / clean.
Glad to hear you agree! I find the pyramid covers to be extremely unappealing to the eye. I think I’m just not going to cover them and let nature do it’s thing.
@@DudeRanchDIY I don't cover mine until I bring the tote to the house ready to use the wood. I have several covers for my totes, but only really use about 10 of them. Through the spring summer and early fall, I let teh sun hit all sides possible. I cover later in the fall for the ones that I know I will be burning for myself. By then I have made the few deliveries I do and they are dumped into my dump trailer. By the way, when dumping - so that you don't bend the bottom rail of the totes, try getting the forks under the rail and flip on it's side - then forks under the bottom of the tote again. The is not a chance for the torque to bend because there is not anything to pinch on from gravity.

At the moment I have 4 cords of bundle grade wood stacked in totes so I’m set for a while. When I need more I would either separate it as I’m splitting or convey it into the dump trailer like I used to.

All of the small totes I have already have the cut out side in them so those will continue to be stacked. I think from here on out all the new totes I get I’m going to leave whole and just fill loosely.

More work to stack, but looks better stacked. And less scraps when you go to deliver to the customer.
The customers don’t see it stacked regardless. I dump the totes in my truck for delivery. The totes are simply an easy way for me to load and measure the wood. Thanks for watching!

I stack wood into my IBC totes turned 90Degrees.
I get 3 rows and more wood into the same space with no dead space.

Jake will you do away with the weather bladder tops if you decide to go this route? I have seen some people cut the bladders diagonally to make two cone looking tops which would probably fit over the excess wood on top.🔥🪵🇺🇸
I probably won’t cover these loose stacked ones, I’ll continue to cover the stacked totes. The big cone diagonal tops are hideous in my opinion. Big producers don’t cover their bulk piles, I think these totes would shed the water pretty well and are up off the ground.
