The WSM cartridges are pretty good. I have the 7wsm and it should be more popular. I know the new stuff in prc is better at longer ranges but for hunting it’s not enough difference to matter to me. Make the 7 wsm great again after your done with the 270. They need support from brass to factory loads. Pushing those projectiles at those velocities will handle about anything in North America. Thx for the work you do.
@@Off-target-xy6bx thank you!
The prc actually isn’t better . Just more available .
@@Paul-q3m7k6.8 western, 6.5 prc, 7prc doesn’t do anything the 270wsm and 7wsm didn’t already achieve. 7prc is just a 7mm wsm lengthened to seat 190gr high bc bullets a little better and shoulder changed from 35 deg to 30 just for the sake of not copying the shoulder. I’m a 21 year user of the 7mm wsm. It’s been my go to since I graduated high school in 2002 for everything big game. The only thing the prc has over the wsm’s MARKETING! Hornady is just better at marketing than browning/winchester
I agree with you on that. I have a 270 WSM,7mm WSM and 300 WSM All 3 are better than any of the PRC rounds in my opinion
@@nickb8618 Except the added weight means about 500 ft pounds more energy at hunting ranges. The BC difference is pretty apparent at longer ranges too. Might be a difference of 40 or 60 inches of drift and 5 feet less drop. I personally shoot a 270 wsm, not knocking the 7 wsm. But the numbers don't lie. BC does matter lol That's the reason the OP here is trying to push those 165's...

Nothing wrong with the 270 WSM but they have made it great… 6.8 Western. Great video
I been wondering why it's not more popular. 7mm mag power in short action. What's not to like?
@@matthewellis2673 absolutely
No free ride with geometry. Short fat usually loss of mag capacity, reduced barrel throat life, and the fact larger moderate cartridges exist that will accomplish just as much with less blast and more efficiency in some cases. But these are general principles in any caliber or cartridge comparison.
@ “short fat” wouldn’t mean more throat erosion than any other magnum. Overbore is overbore whether the case is long or shorts. Seems like short fat cases have inaccurate accuracy qualities too due to consistent column burning, depending on case fill of course.
@@hopefulballistics That's true as a general rule. Also agree with the burning efficiency.
But it doesn’t have 7mm Rem Mag power in any way shape or form so why waste time and money?
Have you ever tried the 110gr TTSX.
I have gotten 3560 with H4350 and 3600 with R17. Averaging 5/8-1/2 groups with my Tikka T3. Sub MOA at 600 yards. Kills deer like lightning. One of my sons killed his 5 point elk at 380 yards . I have a Remington 700SPS in .270wsm. It is finicky with factory loads. I found that the Federal Premium Nosler Ballistic Tip in 130gr groups best for me and is brutal on whitetail! The box says 3300fps at the muzzle. I added a Limb Saver Barrel vibration disc onto the barrel, skeptically I might add, but it actually helped tighty my group at 100 from about .93 to .51 on my best group. As my luck goes Federal has discontinued this round so I guess I’ll have to start reloading my own. Not a big fan of the all copper bullets when it comes to taking deer. Will it get them… yes! Right on
One of the many things I love about my Sako A7 300WSM is the surprisingly decent barrel life.
I monitor all of my rifle bores with a borescope so I can observe throat erosion in real time. 2 years ago I got a 270WIN Xbolt and after the first 300 rounds I was surprised at how much faster that rifle bore is eroding compared to my other rifles. So I reckon the 270WSM is going to be shockingly overbore… especially when running hot double based loads.
It is entirely possible that you will consume 50% of the barrel life or even more with load development and testing of this sort.
Hey do you have a borescope?… if not… order up a teslong stat… you will be amazed by how much you will learn about internal ballistics… and they can record video and images.
I think a video showcasing the condition of the bore of this 270WSM after running a whack of these hot test loads through it would be very interesting… and likely a touch disturbing.
Cheers!

🤔 From Historical Documentation, You Would Expect That The 30-06 Case Would Give You About 100 ft/s More Velocity Potential Than The 308 case! However, With Your Tac Powder Example - Using The 130 grain Bullets - and Your Recent Testing (Using Other Powders and The 130, 136, and 140 grain Bullets in Your 270 WSM), You Should Be Able To See 2 Things: First, That Case Performance Really Depends Upon Finding The Ideal Powder For That Case! And, Second, That With Modern Bullets and Powders, That The Traditional 308 Winchester and 30-06 Cases (Whether For Those Parent Case Loadings or Their "Offspring") Are More Than Enough To Get The Job Done Afield! Thus, As I Always Say, NMN (No Magnum Necessary)! 😜
True. Powder is the key. Burn rate and case fill.
Thank you for doing this. I have been studying up on the data to start my 270wsm load development. I'd selfishly love to see Grand tested with the 129 lrx. Anyway, I know it was stable on your older tests; it didn't flip end over like an FMJ would - but with this setup, at 100, 200, & 300y - if it is stable at 100, it should be even more stable at 300 (based on what the Barnes boys explained) - so accuracy would be interesting to test... I don't have a reload setup right now, so this issue is not pressing for me, yet (no pun intended) - I took some cartridges out this summer, to zero my scope, and now it shoots like a dream.
