  • Smaug, my Philodendron Golden Dragon is one of the OGs of my plant collection. I actually say in the video that I found him, but in fact, my boyfriend spotted him cowering at the back of the shop, behind all the beautiful plants that knew how to establish useful grow pattern.
    Philodendron golden dragon are AWESOME house plants for beginners. AWESOME. They're not fussy about light, they can get SUPER dry without dying, and they don't seem pest prone. Or at least, that's the experience I have.
    On the other hand, any kind of Calathea Ornata (the ones with the white stripes on the leaves) is a pest MAGNET. It's not just me - I see it time and time again on Facebook. Pests just love 'em.
    I've found that a lot of Calathea start develop spots on the leaves if you treat them with a spray-on pest spray regularly. I try to alternate between using a homemade bug spray, and just plain water.

    That little aside about the anthurium clarinevium was so helpful, I just got one and have been babying it but it's putting out a teeny tiny leaf. Excited to watch it grow now! Also I've found that giving my golden dragon quite high light (2 feet from a strong grow light 12hrs/day) has really helped make the growth more compact and maintain the light green variegation.

      The new leaves on clarinervium are ridiculously tiny. I thought I’d done something hideously wrong but they grow so much!
      My golden dragon has been putting out small leaves for ages and is now working on a massive one - I’ve changed nothing. That plant is wild 😂

    My golden dragon is smaller than yours but started a weird growth pattern with one long vine. That vine had a lot of leaves at the top. I chopped it and the three propagations are doing great. The mother plant has a new growth point. Hopefully I can get it more bushy.
    I absolutely love how wild yours is. It’s beautiful and very unique. Mine was ugly lol.

      I think the video embarrassed it - it’s growing really nicely now 🤣 you can always put the props back in the mother to make it look bushier!

    I just got mine recently, and it came to me very leggy. I chopped and propagated right away in water, and the roots are looking great after several weeks. I’ll probably wait a few more weeks to plant them altogether and put them on a small moss pole.

      Good luck! I’m still trying to tame mine 😂 I regularly cut it right back to encourage shorter internodal spacing but it 100% grows however it wants. They’re so easy to care for but in return they want total autonomy over their shape (which is fair enough)

    What kind of soil do you use ?

    • @planethouseplant
      @planethouseplant  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s a homemade mix of coir, perlite, bark, charcoal, and worm castings (roughly 5:5:4:1:1). I can’t imagine they’d be that fussy though, tbh

    i have my golden dragon in lecca and it is producing only very small leaves. I give it 60% humidity and something to climb on. I lost all the leaves due to a severe trips outbreak on it but now it is constantly putting out new leaves only on te very small site. It is a mystery to me . Very strange plant with a very strange grow pattern as you mention in your video It gets enough light also ( east-south facing window).

      So interesting that yours got thrips and mine shook them off - I wonder if that's down to the age of the plant (judging by the corking on some of the stems, I think mine's quite old).
      And what is that growth pattern?? I swear mine wants to crawl along the ground!

    • @sloeberdoet
      @sloeberdoet 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@planethouseplant I have it staked on a bamboo pole now but if I didn't it would also crawl on the floor I think. But even on the pole it grows in different directions. It is a funny plant. I know it is a hybrid but no idea what its parentage is? Maybe one of its parents has a different grow pattern other than climbing. I know Summer Rayne Oaks for instance let hers trail.

      @@planethouseplant I' ve never had pests on my calathea and maranta or alocasia. The only pests I had was on my monstera, philodendron golden dragon and philodendron selloum. All thrips. I think the dragon caught it from the philodendron selloum because they were next to each other.

      I think one of the parents is bipennifolium (which do have a sprawling growth pattern), but I've no idea about the other. I swear mine actively grows away from the pole!

      No I really figure you would be more of a helper cause your plant is big and beautiful and I really can't afford to buy one and thought maybe you would send me a cutting. .
