What its like to be Homeless

  • Recently, I was at City Hall early in the morning and chanced upon a young homeless couple who were just waking up from sleeping on the concrete in Nathan Phillips Square. I approached them and asked if they would like to speak on camera about what life is like for them as a young homeless couple.. They agreed and What It's Like To Be Homeless is the resultant film I produced from this incredibly revealing conversation. Anyone who wonders how homeless people survive or what they feel or how they become homeless in the first place would benefit from viewing this amazing exposé.

College kids are the worst kind of human beings. When I was doing my undergraduate at the University of Cape Town(10 years ago), I used to hear stories from the homeless around the university of how the university students treated them like crap.

It's a hard lonely feeling. I've been there myself more than I even care to remember. I remember how hard it was the first night of being on the streets. I was sitting in a fast food restaurant had no money nobody to call had no idea where I was going to sleep or how I would survive. It was the loneliest feeling in the world and the longest night of my entire life. I basically just sat there hungry and worried out of my mind just waiting to be kicked out. When I finally was told to leave I just wandered around all night long cold damp and hungry like a stray dog. I came to an old abandoned building and went around to the backside of it and sat down on some steps and just waited for daylight to come.

I prefer to be homeless. I don't have a monthly rent payment or utilities. I have a van, and it is like an apartment on wheels. Basically almost everything, an apartment has. The difference is it cost less than $1,000/month, and I have a vechile at the same time.
I get to have more fun. I can eat out. I can go to a movie. I can have new electronics. Many things I do now, I couldn't do, living in an apartment or house.

Seriously? Some places are absolutely filled up, mass unemployment and the last person employers will accept is some homeless bum that hasn't showered for a month. Not only that, but even the most basic jobs like burger flipping or warehouse duties require physical strength, and many homeless people suffer from injuries and health problems and have missing legs and limbs or are simply of old age, and thus can't find even an undertable job. Have a heart man.

Money isn't the problem. It feels like it but it isn't. The problem is people. We need a way to assign values to things (like money). All systems without money have failed way worse than this b/c no body knows what anything's worth. Are your gloves worth my ten cigarettes? IDK? Can you buy food with the ten cigarettes I give you? No, the food owner doesn't accept cigarettes as payment? then I guess you won't take my 10 cigarettes for nice warm gloves that keep my hands from getting frost-bitten. The alternative is, here's a piece of paper that has the same value wherever you go for the pair of gloves I need to survive. The problem isn't from money. It's from the love of money over the values of peoples' character. If you have no character, then money will be all your want in life. Instead of caring for your neighbors or friends, you're looking to get rich.

People sometimes, with the best intentions of course, play the role of a homeless person to see what it's like or to show others what it's like. But those people really have a place to go at the end of the day, when it's too cold, or when they're tired of pretending. Those who are actually homeless don't have that option so those who are pretending will, despite their best efforts, will never truly get it. It's wonderful that they try to understand though. I wish my daughter and I had been just trying to understand. Thank God, and some amazing people, we're not in that situation any longer.

@BeerGod 40oz I am in Sydney Australia, and since the election have consumed at least 5-6 hours of US politics per day, largely TYT, D Packman, Damage Report and such, along with Racheal Maddow et al + some newsmax and fox to see what the idiots are up to, so I have an understanding of US in general.
The deep divide between red and blue in the US is scary, republican lie mongering is actually gaining traction even though most of the brainwashed are far removed from the actual interests and money that shore up the interests of the far right.
Even when we see the occasional politician or a court in some state that signals a need to actually focus and remedy homelessness, it more than often falls on deaf ears. Wasn't it only recently in California that a court clearly stated what needs to be done?
What saddens many of us the most, is that far too often, we see footage of people blithely walking past past people in need. I recall one youtube video of a guy offering "free money", a rich guy not only snatched the bundle of bills but essentially told the guy to fuck off or violence would ensure, he repeated this again with homeless people, and they said if he could spare a few dollars they would be overjoyed, not a single one asked for the whole bundle (a hundred dollars).
Easy to say that faith in humanity will prevail eventually, but when you see what Trump provoked Jan 6th, the fact republicans will block anything BIden does, and the very real voter suppression bills, is it any wonder many of us outside the US see full blown civil war and authoritarianism as a real possibility?
I am sure a few times in my life I have walked by someone in need and not cared or realized, but I am thankful that I can be touched and have done in my time many things to remedy the equation, yet still, I am fearful that society can fall yet further, it has happened before.
I do not believe in God, so leave that out, I do hope that somehow the majority of Americans remember that surely our angels do have a better part.
No one ever deserved to be homeless, not a single one of them ever chose such a condition I am sure.

Aside from having to rent them (which most homeless people can't afford to piss money away on) you also have to have two pieces of ID and enough information to fill out the registry form, which includes aspects of a permanent address, like a phone number, a street address, zip number, etc.
    .
PO box's aren't an option once you're on the streets. If you realize you're inevitably going to end up on the streets and can afford to open one, they're great, but if not...

I was homeless for a long time. I feel that I was there because I was too lazy to change my circumstances, and I think the same thing is true about the other homeless people who I lived with. With the surplus of drop-in centers and the food available from the trash, it's not hard to survive. In my experience of the homeless community, there is a general lack of responsibility for ones own part in ending up on the streets, and for not doing what's necessary to get off of them.

Im not homeless, and I hope I never will be, but with how 2020 is going I feel like im on the edge of being homeless, I lost my mechanic job due to COVID, they had to shutdown from poor finance choices, I picked up another one handyman at these housing complexes and it lasted about a month until things got worse and they closed down or well down sized because of idk, so I found another job, cashier at a gestation, doesn't pay like my last 2 jobs. If my truck ever had some sort of major issue, I wouldn't be able to go to work, and I wouldn't be able to fix it, I went from making about $28 an hour to 10 an hour and let me tell ya, the bills did not get cheaper, if anything things got more expensive and COVID is the excuse for everything. I'm on that fine line, and I don't like it, but I can't do anything about it right now.

Homeless people are not suicidal. It suggests that there are hopes for them. They still want to live.
Hence, the problems of homeless issues are fixable.

    • @Dovenpeis

Of course the problem of homelessness is fixable, it is just a political question of weather or not society wants the government to fix it. And in a capitalist system the government is the only one who actually can fix homelessness, and the government fix it with a universal welfare state. Private charities and self-help and so and and so forth are no way near getting as good results as welfare states.

Although all those factors affect the overall problem, the main problem with getting a job as a homeless person is far more simple than all that.
    .
The real problem is simply that you can't get a job without a permanent address, and you can't get a permanent address without a job. Something as simple as a mailing address and phone number can spell the difference between homeless and normal.
    .
The permanent address issue is what makes it so hard to get off the streets.

I was injured at work 4 years ago. Workers comp allowed delay after delay. Insurance company denials were overturned every time for pain mgmt, meds epidurals, psyc, and finally surgery on my upper back/neck. Workers comp benefits and Ca. St. disability benefits have all been exhausted. I am now on food stamps seeking some medical coverage because my Teamster benefits are long gone. Social Security benefits were denied and are now in the reconsideration process. Teamster for 25 yrs.

I can relate to homeless (shit out of luck) people. For about 13 years living in a bunk (size of a closet - sideways) in a transport truck, and doing a service for our country, this career last for over 35 years. The course of time would have been nicer if different living conditions were to be had, while living from pillar to post.
How was I to endure, you may ask? It was determination… ambition and prayer.
I traveled throughout North America, Canada and Alaska. Met lots of people (homeless) and whenever I’d give a meal, shower, my time or even put up a place for them; people were glad. Helping out is like reaping a payback, when in times of despair.
Do onto others as you would want others to do onto you…
Today, I am older… one thing for truth’s sake is the loneliness; it’ll kill the spirit and weaken the soul. Sure, there are the good, bad and ugly moment’s life gives out. So never quit. Why? Respect yourself, first. Want to achieve better, believe in self healing, spiritually, physically, and that’s why seeking the truth is important. Though many people think different… a means of lack to lend a hand is not good.
Those that help themselves are those with one intention in mind… self-indulgence. They are the sluggards that’ll try and bring you down. Many who come and go wear cloaks of wicked cloth; be careful who you trust for a helping source? Many indentions can lead you astray.
All those memories and the career have slowly faded away.
I am preparing for a different walk in life these days…
Keep on… keeping on… got to be rationally thinking - psychologically.
    MGTOW!
PTL - God is good all the time…
