I've listened to the undubbed version that has no string accompaniment to it and I like this version far better. For me the string version as they call it just adds something special to the song for me and makes it better. Harold Dorman's beautiful original stands tall above all the other cover versions in my opinion. An underrated singer songwriter I think.

I agree! The strings really make this the best version! Some great background vocals, too...

Harold Dorman did this song in 1960 the very early years of rock and roll before Johnny Rivers recreated that 1964 song

Johnny Rivers had the biggest chart hit with this song as a cover, but he wasn't the first one to cover it. That would be Narvel Felts (with Matt Lucas on drums) who covered it three years after Harold for Renay Records. Chet Atkins reissued it on RCA/Groove records, but the cover flopped. Johnny recorded it next as a live song for Imperial Records and he came up with the Top Ten hit. In the 1980's Charley Pride covered it for RCA as a country song and made the Country Top Twenty with his version.

Harold was a Mississippi Delta boy who wrote this great rockabilly standard. Nobody did it better. The strings were a late addition; they say it's much better- and "countrier"- without them. I'll look for the undubbed version soon.
