  • On June 14 and 15, 2024, Siegel Auction Galleries of New York City will offer the William H. Gross Collection of United States Stamps, the last in a series of auctions of what many consider to be the most complete and significant collection of American postage stamps ever assembled.
Built over the course of decades by the “Bond King” William “Bill” H. Gross, who co-founded PIMCO in 1971, this collection promises to set a new high-water mark for stamp collecting when it crosses the auction block. Siegel’s experts anticipate the entire collection will realize $15 to $20 million, with several individual stamps breaking the $1 million mark and the collection’s rarest stamp-the 1868 One-cent “Z” Grill-on track to become the most valuable American postage stamp with an estimate of $4 to $5 million.

This makes stamp collecting wildly, and correctly, exciting!

99.9% of collectors could afford only the single Z-grill as their entire collection. :)

I must be the old guy in this philatelically stirring video. 🙂I have the exact same watermark detector (black glass!) and metal perf. gage. My box has the original price in pencil, 69¢. No doubt this will be a grand auction and I look forward to the catalog.

Are they still using Stamp Hinges in the video?

It's only acceptable for stamps issued through the end of WWII. After that, it reduces the value of unused stamps.
