I'm sorry the video is not sharp. It's the first soldering video I made and I didn't notice this on the small gopro screen. So please be patient with me. Next time I'll use a different setup. But it's pretty hard to do this. If I put the camera too high my head will be on screen the whole time. Too low and I can't see what I'm doing. This really is harder than it looks when you watch others do it.

Superb tip! I destroyed my first connector trying to get the pins hot enough to flow solder into them, the plastic melted and the pins ended up pointing in crazy directions. Thanks to this video I was able to get the second one soldered together extremely quickly and easily. :)

The exactly same thing happened to me too! I ended up making a small model of the plastic inlay that holds the pins and 3D printing that. It was a little wobbly so I filled the plug with hot glue, which, duh, again partly melter the printed inlay :P

How hard is it to use a thermoharder plastic for the part that holds the pins.... These plugs are defective by design.

Thanks, wish I'd watched this before trying to solder my plug. Made a total mess and now waiting for a replacement so I can try again!

Thanks a lot for the tip! You saved my Saturday as I soldered DIN 13-pin connector (for Atari ST) and it was very quick. Would have been impossible otherwise. :)

I quit soldering DIN plugs. The pins are not wel made, the plastic melts, the pins in the center are never longer than the ones on the outer ring, but worst of all is the cover, the metal hook to keep it in place always slides off and you pull the plug open if it is in a tight DIN socket. So my advise: buy a cheap sealed premade cable, and cut it in half and solder that to say a SCART plug or so.
