    This is why a laugh and roll my eyes when I see people talking about how he would've been mediocre without his great line. People get dazzled by pretty moves (Barry Sanders) but don't take into account Emmitt's football IQ, his toughness and his shiftiness. Not saying Barry wasn't great or doesn't deserve to be in the GOAT conversation, but anybody who can't admit that Emmitt wasn't every bit as good if not better just doesn't know football.

    For me his greatest attribute was his attitude. He was a warrior. He was a 60s throwback...a quicker version of Jim Taylor. Could and did play hurt, refused to be subdued even when he had broken ribs. The Master!

    The '92 season was technically Emmitt's best season. I just remember the '93 season when he held out and the Cowboys went 0-2 without him. Emmitt signs and they win 7 straight. The '93 Cowboys were the first team to go 0-2 and still win a Superbowl. Emmitt was the heart and soul of the 90's Cowboys. A local radio station printed up tee shirts that said ''Give it to Emmitt.'' It was a great time for Cowboy nation.

    These few plays are why I think Barry Sanders wouldn't have had more yards if he played with Dallas' great offensive line, like many people say he would. If you look at Detroit's offense they had holes that Barry didn't take, he wasn't that kind of runner. Also Moose was legendary and that's why they had that hug and cry when he finished with the most yards in the NFL and their moment at his induction to the Hall.

    Anybody that's an Emmitt Smith fan and has had to try to articulate why he's the best running back ever, this is what made him the goat. When we think of running backs we think of power speed agility quickness. We don't think of strategic running, of the small shifts in leans that get him two extra yards. Of being able to read the defense when everybody in front of you is taller than you. Me and my brother talk about this all the time he never seemed to take the huge hits, even the singletary hit in this video, he doesn't quite get Smith All The Way. All of these things are why he's the best ever. And if you are a casual fan and you watch a Barry Sanders video or Earl Campbell or sweetness you may conclude that they were on a different level than it Emmitt Smith. But for those of us who watched him game after game we know. Even if it is hard for us to articulate that in an argument in a bar or your backyard.

    • @thelogicalcowboy
      @thelogicalcowboy  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      🔥 🔥 ! My point exactly. That color commentator who said Smith made his line better was Bill Parcells. I said it before and I'll say it again. If I'm teaching my son how to play running back. I'm showing him tape on the goat Emmitt Smith. As a Coach, I would not like Sanders's style at all as complimentary football. It was undisciplined, and at times put his offense at a disadvantage. He created a lot of 3rd and long for his team by losing yards on first and second downs. Trust me coaches like Jimmy Johnson, and Bill Belichick, (although Landry had a similar back in Dorsett, even Dorsett wasn't as undisciplined as Sanders) Landry and Bill Parcells would have lost their minds dealing with Sanders. I love Sanders and still think he's a top 4 running back in history But what made him great is also what stifled his team.

      So, was Sanders a top 2 running back in '98? Was Davis a top 5 running back in '99? You're selecting seasons to fit your narrative. That's not how it works. When you look at the total picture and work of Emmitt Smith, what was his production on the field compared to Sanders? The truth is, Smith from 1991 to 1998 was up there with Sanders in yards for just about every season, beating him each year from 1991 to 1995 except for one season. Sanders almost went half a decade in his prime without winning a rushing title mainly because of Emmitt Smith! But here's a stat that's more important than yards that makes Emmitt Smith the GOAT... but only when we compare it with yards: touchdowns. From 1990 to 1998, Smith scored 125 TDs, while Sanders scored 85 TDs. Smith is up there with rushing yards compared to Sanders and in at least 4 seasons had more yards than Sanders, but absolutely annihilates him in TDs. Smith had more production on the field than Sanders, and it's not even close. Would you rather have a back who is arguably the best in both yards and tds or a back who is arguably just the best in yards?

    If you're open to suggestions, I would recommend that if you decide to do another video on Emmitt, you should do his 1995 season, which was also MVP-worthy. Emmitt led the NFL in carries, total touches, rushing yards, scrimmage yards, rushing touchdowns, and total touchdowns. He's the only RB (since the merger) to lead the league in all those categories in the same season. In fact, he led the league outright in 10 statistical categories that season.

    Emmitt was a great reliable and intelligent running back. Most backs once they have the rock they commit themselves to what ever was said in the huddle and that's it but Smith was always thinking and looking for opportunities. That's why he was always ahead of his counter parts. By the way, the way you dissected the plays explaining how the Hall of Famer did it, is very well done. But then in 1995 Emmitt outpaced second place Barry Sanders by 273 yards. You might say that Emmitt won his last rushing title running away...

    You are just so good at describing and breaking down the special abilities of players, and I greatly appreciate that! I think Emmitt had the best vision of any running back. As you pointed out, he not only was able to change direction quickly to hit the hole available, but he was also able to see downfield and set up the opponent to create even more room and opportunity for himself. I just don't know why Emmitt is so underrated when talking about the all time greats, because he certainly proved he belongs up there. Excellent video! Thanks for posting!

    • @thelogicalcowboy

      Appreciate the compliments bro! I think Emmitt is hated on because he's a Dallas Cowboys. Think about the Cowboys' other greats like Dorsett. Dorsett retired as the second all-time back in yards during both the regular and postseason. Yet a lot of people hardly ever talk about him except for Cowboys fans. The same with Randy white and Bob Lilly. I'm doing a video on Michael Irvin's prime years next week. It's going to be really interesting to show how great he truly was. But no one names him with NFL goats. They say he was a great player, a legend. But he's never up there with the elite of Legends. I can go on! Witten, the great Staubach, Mel Renfro, Everson Walls, Darren Woodson, the list is long. .

    All of that technical information right there illustrates how Emmitt did this all the time, in every game, and one of the reasons why he is still the all time rushing leader of the NFL. Another reason is his ability to play through injury. Remember the game against the Giants when he kept playing on despite a separated shoulder. Incredible guts, mental focus, extreme drive to gain more yards and win. He dedicated his whole mind and body to the game, and to the rest of the his teammates. That incredible run of 3 Superbowl Titles in a span of 4 years was a record in itself, and it took Emmitt, Troy, Michael Irvin, Novacek, Johnston, the best O line, and the best defense in the league to do it. In other words, the entire team and coaching staff. I was in hog heaven, working up in North Carolina in those days there wasn't a big Dallas fan base, but I wore my Dallas caps at work most days. The other days I wore a black cap with a silver #3 on the front for Dale Earnhardt. Thanks again LC!!!

    A lot of people wanted to compare Emmitt Smith to Tony Dorsett. The thing is that they had completely different styles. T.D. didn't have the power that Emmitt had and Emmitt didn't have the speed that T.D. did but when they both got on a roll they were almost impossible to stop. I remember Emmitt's rookie year in 1990 and while I knew he was going to be good I just didn't imagine at that time that he would become The Man.

      You got that right, two completely different styles, body shapes and sizes and skill sets. They had a couple of things in common though. BOTH had AMAZING field vision. Both had fantastic cut back ability. Both had extraordinary body control as well. And both were well above average as receivers out of the backfield as well. Emmitt probably has a slight edge on Tony in blocking but Tony was an underrated blocker IMO.

    The thing that I noticed was, Richard Dent actually overpowered the Moose on that Smith TD run. Dent put Johnston on the ground, hard, and was one step from making the tackle. But it was too late, Smith was gone by then. Dent won the battle, Smith won the war. Johnston was a (big) speed bump that helped along the way. As you said, a great block by Moose, because he got the job done on a hall of famer. But it was a close call.
    I want to say great job on the video because of the End Zone camera angles you employed so well to illustrate your points.
    Televised NFL games are dominated by the sideline camera looking down the line of scrimmage. I understand why - it shows the advance of the defence against the advance of the offense, the drama of the game. But this angle is really most beneficial for the casual fan. For those of us fanatics who like the analysis/breakdown of schemes, the end zone camera angle gives the best story. And you used the end zone angles superbly to show how Smith and the rest of the Cowboys offense did to the Bears what Foster and the Steelers could not do.
    Very good video, LC. Thanks again.

    Emmitt ran for over 2,000 yards per season at Pensacola Escambia in his Junior and Senior years of high school. I thought no way was he gonna do that in college, but he proved me wrong by dominating the SEC. I thought again, he wouldn't be a good running back in the NFL because he wasn't the fastest or most powerful runner. Well, he turned out to be the greatest running back of all time. A lot of people are going to say he gained all those yards because of the Dallas Cowboys offensive line. So, everywhere he goes there's a big offensive line waiting for him, at Escambia HS, University of Florida, Dallas Cowboys? He must be the luckiest player ever. This explains why he is the greatest, though not easy to understand for the casual football fan.

Then went to college and had almost 4k yards in 3 years with a passing offense that was arguably the worst in college history. He had 1341 yards in 1987. That was the first 1300-plus-yard season for Florida since 1975. Then he went on and broke 60 school records. Then went on and became the goat in the nfl. Before he even got to nfl he was already widely considered the best athlete in Florida history! Like you said he must be the luckiest man in history or he truly is the goat. Great post!!!

    I always tell potential running backs to find a back that has your natural abilities and watch film on that back. Don't try and be Barry Sanders if you are a natural power back.
    But ... I tell them all to watch video on Emmitt Smith because when it comes to the fundamental technique of being a running back, Emmitt is the goat. His foot work is perfect. His body position is perfect. Every step from the moment the ball is snapped is perfect.

    • @thelogicalcowboy

      I do the same thing. Emmitt Smith was the perfect running back. His only weakness was his speed. Yet he was not slow. Every other quality he was elite in. His patience. Vision. Power. Blocking. Catching. His quickness on cut-back runs. His explosion through the gaps. A running back you can put in any kind of offense and he'll thrive in. His IQ or his ability to read the defense. Probably the smartest *RUNNER* in history. Like you said... he understood body positioning like no one I've ever seen. His ability to make something look different in every play. If he was going through the A gap he knew how to wait for his blocks but at the same time sell the B gap. Because he was short His low center of gravity made it easy for him to cut in and out of lanes. I can go on but I'll leave it to another video. Lol. Appreciate you bro!

    Barry would have never done that.
    What cements Emmitt over Barry for me is when he "Reclaimed" the Dallas star, during the 2000 season.
    Those who remember know the Cowboys were playing the Niners. TO scored a TD and ran to the star, stood in the middle with his arms out.
    No one did anything.
    Smith scores later on, runs to the star with his helmet off. Takes a knee, plants his helmet and let's the world know what time it was.
    TO scores again and runs towards the star. This time it's different thanks to Emmitt's previous action.
    George Teague comes in hot and almost blasted TO, then a small scuffle ensues.
    Had TO did that in Detroit, while Barry was playing. No way Barry reacts the way Smith did. It's little intangibles like that, which really makes a difference.
    Im a Titans fan and my All-Time favorite RB is Eddie George. Yet in These Barry vs Emmitt debates I always choose Emmitt.

    Color commentator quote from video clip during the Seattle game shown above, "...when really the blocking ISN'T that fantastic, but he makes those linemen look better..."
    Nate Newton, Guard for Dallas from 1986 to 1998 (2x All Pro, 6xPro Bowler) said, ""before Emmitt Smith got here, I was just a fat guy. Now....I'm a fat guy that goes to Pro Bowls."
    Literally NOBODY tries to disrespect what Jim Brown did. NOBODY tries to disrespect what Walter Payton did either. I don't hear people out here saying yeah well if Gale Sayers wasn't injured he'd have passed Jim Brown or if Tony Dorsett hadn't gotten so few carries because Coach Landry was trying to save him from wearing down he'd have passed Walter Payton. NOBODY says that crap.
    And NOBODY wants to acknowledge that Dallas wasn't the only good O-line in the history of the game either. Look at Washington in the 80s, one version or another of the Hogs was on the field from 82 to 91 but Washington didn't have a back that ended up the all time leading rushing leader behind that line. Funny, it's almost like there needed to be a generational talent in the backfield to make that happen no matter how good the O line was.
    It's the same kind of garbage arguments I hear when people try to claim Lebron is the GOAT instead of Michael. And it's made by the same kind of people that often weren't around to even watch those guys play live on TV instead of just in highlight reels on TH-cam. And where this argument is concerned about Emmitt Smith I think most of it is born out of nothing but hatred of the Dallas Cowboys more than any other single reason.
    You let me pick my all time fantasy team from the Super Bowl Era I ain't picking Barry Sanders to be one of my running backs I'm picking Emmitt Smith. And despite growing up as a Cowboy fan I'm going to be real honest here and tell you that neither Pearson or Irvin is my number 1 receiver Jerry Rice is just so you know I can put my bias aside to pick the best player available. We can go down the list if you want. Lawrence Taylor is the greatest outside linebacker to play the game and I can say that despite having no love for the Giants or LT's off the field behavior. And even being too young to see him play I'm pretty sure Dick Butkus was the greatest Middle Linebacker of all time. People need to take their fanatic glasses off when making these statements and be honest about it whether they like the teams a player was on or not.

      Great post as always. That Color commentator is Bill Parcells! I'm a huge fan of Barry Sanders. But if I'm teaching a kid the fundamentals of a running back I'm showing him footage of Emmitt Smith... the most technically sound back in history.
      People will take the athletic Randy Moss or the monster Calvin Johnson over Rice. I get it. But Jerry Rice is the definition of a WR. He wasn't the best receiver in terms of talent. He wasn't the fastest, biggest, or the most athletic receiver but he was the perfect receiver who perfected the WR position. There are a lot of amazing talents in the NFL. But only a few that we can say perfected their position.
      Players like Brady, Montana, Rice, Walter Payton, and Smith are in that category. LeBron James is arguably the most gifted athlete in history. But no one played the game of basketball more technically than Jordan. To me, that's what made him the goat. He was able to perfect the sport which is harder to do than just being talented.

      I beg to differ. If you do your research of all the great running backs in NFL history, every single one of them had at least TWO All Pro, Pro Bowl or Hall of Fame Offensive Linemen blocking for them, so your statement is just your opinion, which you are indeed entitled to, but the fact of the matter is that ALL the great running backs in NFL history ran behind great offensive lineman. Do the research.

    From 1985 to 1990 the Bears were the better team. The Cowboys had beaten the Bears including in 1984 at Soldier Field from 1972 to 1984 whenever they played against each other. The 85 Bears put it all together and just destroyed Dallas most particularly on defense. The Cowboys just had no chance losing 44-0 in 1985 and in 1986 the Cowboys got crushed too. The shame of it was that in both games it was done by a backup QB. In 1988, the Cowboys got crushed again at Soldier Field. The Cowboys just didn't have the talent to compete with Chicago until the 1991 wildcard game in Chicago. Dallas finally had the team to compete with the Bears and they pulled a close win. As Dallas got it put all together in 1992, Chicago on the other hand just collapsed as a team. After starting off 5-3 the Bears had lost 7 of 8 going into Dallas. It was Mike Singletary's last game and Mike Dikta last game coaching for the Bears was all but certain after the Dallas game. To be fair, the Bears had kept Dallas to a 3-0 halftime lead and then the second half all but unraveled for the Bears the first few drives. You saw it in the Emmitt Smith run to clinch the rushing title. Then a Russell Maryland touchdown off a running pitch deflection to him to run it in for the score. Then an interception by the defense and touchdown by Curvin Richards run all but sealed the game. Still we all know about the Curvin Richard game where he fumbled twice and got cut the next day to send a message not to let up.

    Annoucer guy was wrong about one thing: The blocking really was that good. Because Emmitt had that line in f ront of him, doing their job exactly the way it was drawn up on paper, he had the time to pick those holes and make those stutter steps, then pop one for 11 yards. Opinions may vary, but in mine that was THE best offensive line, ever assembled. The offensive coordinator had the players with the talent, nay! the athletiicism, to execute what he could dream up. They didnt just dominate physically - it was equal parts psychological warfare and physical dominance and perfection in execution.They were so good it made Emmitt's job easy, and Aikman was one of the best QB's in history.
    That team had no weaknesses, and if it did the offensive line was not one of them.

    • @ashleighelizabeth5916
      @ashleighelizabeth5916 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Nate Newton said it best, ""before Emmitt Smith got here, I was just a fat guy. Now....I'm a fat guy that goes to Pro Bowls." Nobody was calling Nate Newton, Mark Tuinei or Kevin Gogan Pro Bowl talent before Emmitt despite the fact that Herschel Walker lead the NFC in rushing behind them. In fact everybody gave all the credit to Walker despite running behind a "terrible" O-line. And Tom Rafferty who Walker ran behind was every bit as talented as Mark Stepnoski was.
      As to your statement about it being the best O-line ever? Well MAYBE. But I bet you the Redskin's Hogs line would give you a strong argument about why that might not be true. I'm sure Timmy Smith would tell you he has a Super Bowl MVP trophy because of those guys and he was just a one hit wonder.

      Yeah, Troy Aikman had a better rookie season than Dan Marino remember? And that line was widely regarded as the best in football even though NONE OF THEM HAD EVER MADE THE PRO BOWL UNTIL EMMITTs THIRD YEAR IN THE LEAGUE!! And when that line gave up ELEVEN SACKS of Aikman in the first Philly game of 1991 everyone was amazed at their greatness….And when Irvin had 413 yards in 1990 when Emmitt made the Pro Bowl as a rookie everyone said that Irvin was the only reason Emmitt was good. DELUSIONAL!! EMMITT MADE THAT COWBOYS TEAM!! They built the entire offense AROUND EMMITT FIRST!! Everything else came from that.!!! The announcer was spot on. Your analysis isn’t. Emmitt MADE THE COWBOYS IN THE 1990s They win ZERO Super Bowls without him. That’s 100% clear to anyone being objective.

    • @joshuahendricks7701
      @joshuahendricks7701 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      And a little further analysis of that line reveals that ZERO were drafted in the first round. The highest was a third round pick. TWO were UNDRAFTED free agents. One of those was a defensive lineman who was converted to offense his third year in the league l. The other was so great he was cut by the Redskins because he wasn’t good enough to make “the Hogs” and spent two years in the USFL before coming to the Cowboys. One was a sixth round pick. One was an 11th round pick who was traded for from the Raiders. Go look at the Raiders, Packers and Browns lines from the 60s and 70svand tell me how many HOFers they had.

Barry played his entire career against nickel and dime defenses in the GARBAGE NFC Central. The NFC East won 7 of 10 Super Bowls from 1986-1995 and it should have been 8. Emmitt played his entire career against 7 and 8 man fronts. I can teach you about football if I need to.

    Beautiful explanation of everything this just gives me a deeper appreciation for emmits running prowess which people just attribute to the lines he had. It truly was both the line and Emmit because his replacements during his hold out and when hurt did not do good with that great line. ““Any body can run with that line” statement was not true most of the time in my opinion!
