      @@perteadsf4914 I mean you're spot on. League is toxic because it's complex, but looks approachable enough for people that refuse to stop and think, learn from their mistakes or be humble. This imo is a massive cause of the toxicity -> Smurfing is cheating and ruins competitive integrity. We don't have collegiate players in highschoolers games for a reason. Enough with players playing on accounts they don't care about & solo decide game outcomes whether positively or negatively.

      @@alexrosario423 The first part of your arguement is just wrong. A smurf has an advantage by definition as being someone who is playing subtantially below their MMR or skill level. No shot you would say a professional golfer playing at a weekend club doesn't have an advantage because he still uses a golf ball and putter. On your last point this is ironically the issue. It is true only over a long enough sample size of games, which many players don't play long enough to experience because of how demotivating smurfing is. Personally, on the winning side of having a Katarina go 26-2-5 is not even fun.

    you kinda touched on it with the elitist mindset. but i think a lot of league players, frankly including myself, have ego issues and think they r better than the other people they are in game with. for example i know i've watched a lot of coach curtis and i genuinely feel like ive learned a lot from your videos but what i didnt realize was because of that i would feel like i had superior understanding of the game or how to play certain matchups compared to my teammates. However that simply wasnt the case. ive found that most of my friends who r higher elo like myself consume a lot of league of legends content that is very different but still learn certain things from them that helps us in ranked, and i think people grossly disrespect each others knowledge and skill at the game cause there are 100 million ways to win and unless u r close to rank one u probably dont have a clue of more than a few of them (which is quite good in itself).
    sadly ive met MLA players on the ladder who had massive egos cause they thought their mindset was so incredible compared to everyone else who was just randomly playing the game, and that actually was what initially made me think about my own dismissive mentality towards other players. it sounds dumb, but it was hard for me to realize that my teammates were also on a journey exactly like me trying to improve and not just playing every game to carry or troll, or even win or lose - but simply to get better.

    League is still one of the only modern 5v5 competitive games using only win loss elo with no performance incentives. Games like dota, overwatch, the finals etc have all changed their systems to reward for individual performance. Even if you were losing 2 less LP for playing an S+ loss it would feel much better and atleast you knew you over performing meant something

  • @erynpimentel915
    @erynpimentel915 วันที่ผ่านมา +6

    It’s toxic because of the ranked system. It’s enraging because your climb is based on wins and losses but it’s a 5-player game and your individual performance often has little impact on the outcome of a game, and the matchmaking system is designed to put you where it thinks you belong rather than a hands off ladder and let people end up where they may.

      But your individual performance has a MASSIVE impact on the outcome on the game. If this wasn't true than many pro players couldn't climb on a fresh account to masters with 80%+ w/r.
      Reality is that the ranked system gets you to your approximate rank and then once you're there it feels as if you have little impact because you're playing with people of your rank which means you have about the same impact as all other 9 players.
      But for example if you're an emerald player and play on an iron account you'll have an absolutely massive impact most games. That's because you're significantly better than the rest of the players. The fact is, if you get better you'll have a bigger impact. If that wasn't true than everyone would be the same rank.

    • @erynpimentel915
      @erynpimentel915 12 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @@skylarkesselring6075 It doesn’t work that way though. Sure, some Masters player on a fresh account can do that with hard carry champs- and note, you still estimate they lose a decent chunk of games, meaning many games are out of your control- but what about someone playing on an account that’s many years old, has thousands of hours on it? It’s very different.
      The problem is they try to match make for 50/50 games, but in doing so, if you are on an old experienced account they will put experienced players on the other team, so you are never stomping 5 Iron noobs, for example. This is just my experience. I love League of Legends but the ranked system is geared to put you where it thinks you belong, rather than just throwing everyone into the mix and letting people climb and fall

    A bit of a longer comment here, lets gooo!
    What really touched me from this video is the empathy part and understanding that no matter how big or small of a mistake is to you, to another person it can be a totally different story. I find that looking at people and judging based on "simple mistake so that means you're a piece of shit or an inter" is just not good for anyone. When we play soloq, we constantly play with random people. This means that we might land on different moods, focus levels, health levels of theirs, capabilities and skill stacks that they have. There's so much rng involved, so to speak, that having this expectation of "well, it's X rank so this means everyone here should know Y and be capable of executing it all the time" is just counter productive.
    I would go as far as to say- there's no absolute truth as to what rank means what level of skill in each aspect of the game. There is no such thing. What we have instead is the higher that you go in ranks, the more capable people become on average and the more skilled they are in each of the aspects on average. However, that does not mean that every single person at challenger will be better capable of warding than diamond, lets say. It's way more likely to be true and I'd still net on challenger people due to the law of averages, but it doesn't mean they'll put better wards EVERY SINGLE TIME, each of the challengers...
    That makes me think- there is no point in expecting anything from anyone when people are random. The goal is to find the most effective communication and coordinate to the best of your ability while yourself performing to the best of your mechanical ability each and every single game. Sometimes it'll work out, sometimes it will not. Sometimes you will lack, sometimes teammates will lack. Or sometimes enemies will be way better players in each of the aspects and there's "literally nothing you could do because they're just better". And it's fine.
    If you play league and want to become better, the only thing to do is... Well, improve on each of your aspects (or some specific ones depending on how you decide to progress).
    So coming back to toxicity... There's so many expectations where people think "PLAYERS MUST BE THIS WAY", and then they are tilted when people aren't. Also, it's a skill to be a good team player in both communication and coordination. It takes some level of understanding and awareness to know what helps and what doesn't. And so much of the communication on league doesn't help. It just irritates, tilts and triggers people more. There's so much stuff that's said that does not make a positive impact. And keep in mind that most communication happens in a team environment, not all chat.
    So yeah... Faulty expectations, lack of empathy and understanding that we're all on the same journey but different stages and that there is no "wrong" mistake. All mistakes are mistakes and all can be learnt from. Some will be more costly, some will be less and such is life, but all that you can do really is accept it and move on. There's no changing the past, only learning to adapt to change the course of the future.

    What I hate the most about LoL is that playing well doesn't effect the outcome of most games that are played.
    In chess +400 elo on an opponent is roughly a 90% win rate. In LoL that amount of elo is the difference between gold and silver. So in a "1v1" lets say in any given game I contribute between 16 and 20 "points" towards my team winning. The person I am against contributes between 1 and 20. There is a 90% chance that I contribute more to my team then my opponent.
    Now lets say the lobby is filled with people who are on my opponent's level. The enemy team has 5d20 worth of contribution, and my team has 4d20 + (15 + d5). This is roughly a 70% win rate. If you play 10 games in a night, smurfing a tier down, consistently better play would change the result of the game on average twice. 20% of the games you played in mattered. If Riot considers you as a higher mmr player, they might try to "even" it out placing better players on the opposing team and it will be less. If instead of an entire tier above your opponent you are only 2 divisions, then your only going to be at roughly a 58% win rate. You could go a 10 set w/o your play being good enough to change the out come of any of the games that night.
    Then this all gets thrown out the window when you are placed in lobbies where there is a 10% chance that a team has a smurf/booster that is 3-4 ranks higher then your play. Now in 10% of games there is a 4/9 chance the smurf is on your side and you get a 90% win rate through you and the smurf having better play, and a 5/9 chance that you have a 30% win rate because you are against the smurf. when you only effect 2/10 of the games you play, having a smurf impact 10% of your games is super demotivating. (in the 70% win rate example, the presence of a smurf in games lowers win rate by 1.8%, and removes 9% of the games you would be deciding. In the example where your only 2 divisions higher and your base win rate is 58%, your overall win rate goes to 54.5%.
    This makes it feel like consistent play isn't rewarding, even if i contribute more to my team then my opponent in 70% of games its only going to effect the outcome of 1 in 20 games. If I don't want to play 1000 games to climb, I need to be not only 70% of the time better, I need to be 90% of the time better, and I need to be able to raise the bar above 20 contribution. I can't play like a gold to get out of silver fast, I need to play like a diamond.
    I know differences in LP gains/Losses can make it so climbing with a 50% WR is possible, but if the system is giving +20/- 20 LP, its going to take 1000+ games to climb a rank/division

My friend who i play with though can't even tell me what they were thinking in the moment. I ask "what were you trying to do" and they literally don't answer. I'm just trying to understand the thought process

    The reaseon league is toxic is because it is a "competitive" game that lacks very crucial parts of ways to communicate with your team.
    The reason we still play it is because of addiction or having fun with friends.

      I disagree to be honest, the ping system is very in depth and accomplishes 99% of necessary communications if you use it correctly

      @@Kalsimir nope it doesn't at all. If you have used voice coms every before, you would instantly know this
      Not to mention that they absolutely butchered the ping system with a whole bunch of restrictions and shit.

      @@overpoweredjelly3513 I use voice coms in my WoW guild every day, but pings are what keeps the bacon sizzling. 9/10 your intentions can be communicated thru pings and body language

      @@overpoweredjelly3513i think adding something like voice coms would only make it more distracting, i always play a lot worse when i have to worry about listening and talking to someone on discord for example

      @@overpoweredjelly3513 My guy I run a WoW guild that gets AOTC each season I probably spend more time managing voice coms than 99% of people lol. The ping system is pretty great if you use it + complementing positioning.

    Not being able to articulate one's own abilities is not unique to league of legends and is actually more common than not. Acquiring a skill and analyzing or explaining it are 2 separate things and rarely do people possess both. It has nothing to do with it being a video game.
