Betta Macrostoma - I Have Fry! Miracle Babies and New LOW PH Setup

  • I have FRY from my betta macrostoma! Not, like, a ton, but the fact that they even exist is probably some sort of miracle. It's been years since my male raised some babies!
    Ok, I thought buying sticks/driftwood off of EBAY was pretty funny. Did you see that EVIL one?!

    Did you see the EVILL EBAY DRIFTWOOD, though?
    What do you think guys, are these miracle babies or what?! I did my best to explain some basic water chemistry and bacterial cycling in this one, but not so in-depth that it got boring.
    I bought my stuff from either Ebay or flipaquatics.com

      That piece of driftwood came from the slopes of Mt Doom in sunny Mordor, if my sources are correct. I think Voldemort uses it for his tanks.

      When you get the evil driftwood, you should plant red plants with it to resemble fire, idk if theres any plants that have a bright red on them though, just throwing it out there.

    For your overhang, I’d grab a sheet of plywood just long enough to cover both tanks outlines, paint it with glossy coats & place it under both tanks. Matching the color can blend it while contrasting can give a little accent. Painting one side black & the other side another color could give you the opportunity to test which looks better.
    Of course; you’d want to do this before filling the tanks with water…😅

  • @walterotiepka1460
    @walterotiepka1460 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I wouldn't worry about the slight overhang, they're just 20 gallons, and the bottom rims of the tanks are well glued in with those plastic edges. If you're going to have soft water, best to use soft water plants, as hard water plants generally don't adapt well to soft water. Since you're using substrate, go with substrate feeders. It's also a good idea to cap the soil with and inch or more of sand so the nutrients don't escape (unless you're doing water column feeders). It might be difficult using such soft water without fertilizer and co2 injection, since you're not able to get co2 from decomposition with a deep substrate setup (of course some plants are more survivalist than others), and you'll definitely need kh if you go that route, as the kh helps greatly to buffer any excess co2. Since bettas like top cover, floating plants or plants that grow all the way to the top of the tank and become emergent might be the best option, as they can get all the carbon they need from the air.

    Very isperational! Looking forward to my next tank to try new things. ^^
    Just in case someone is interessted:
    My last two tanks I did start with the substrate, hardscape an even plants right away with no bacterial starter or anything like it.
    Waited three/four weeks for the bactiria cultures to build up before add snails and shrimp and two/three months for the fish (just a single beetta splendes per tank).
    Worked out fine for a year, now I'm dealing with algea for the first time.

      @SimplyBetta  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Idk of you’ve ever tried this, but maybe try putting small live food like baby brine in the tank when the male has eggs. Then he knows there’s enough food for the babies. It works with guppies! Stops them from eating the babies.

    You could attach a long shelf bracket to the wall on each end of the cabinet, so that the shelf bracket lines up with the edge of the cabinets/supports the tank overhang.

      @@SimplyBetta Yes it was just a standard 20 long from like petsmart I think. It's been a few years now but I'm pretty sure it hung over about an Inch at the most. When I did a water change I remember hearing something maybe crack the tiniest bit but I didn't think anything of it. Then it randomly split along the bottom seem one day and slowly leaked out. Luckily it was a betta sorority so they all survived just jumping around on the damp gravel. Also luckily that apartment had concrete floors haha oops. I just wouldn't risk it with your awesome fish especially those new babies!!! Always love your channel!!

    I've seen clips of people taking the eggs/ fry out of the mouth of other mouthbrooding species like arowana, then they put them in what's essentially a brine shrimp hatchery to gently float them around. Would you attempt something like this, or do you think the father would swallow the eggs as soon as you go to scoop him out?

    When you had the eggs fungus after stripping them out, have you tried a little bit of methylene blue? It works great on my Cory eggs. The difference between using it and not is very noticeable. Well done on the spawning too. Those fish are gorgeous.

    Your slightly overhanging tanks will be fine but if you want to be certain that they will have (more) equal support on all edges, get a large piece of dense particle board/plywood to put underneath both of the tanks. It'll help with the weight distribution and peace of mind ;)

    • @SimplyBetta
      @SimplyBetta  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank You! Now I have to decide if peace of mind is worth having to lift 2 tanks full of waterlogged substrate. Hmmmmmm

      @@SimplyBetta I couldn't tell ya! But I had a similar situation and my original plan was to let it be, considering I've seen other people (including fishtubers) have a little overhang on their rimmed tanks.. but one day I just looked at the 29 gallon tank and decided I wanted to get better support for it. Drained it most of the way down and had my bf help me raise up one side and we carefully shimmied the board under it. I sleep very soundly now (in regards to that tank!)

    I have on occasion had the same problem with breeding my own live rats for my ball pythons, when I start a new female breeder rat, she doesn't always take to it right away, and is a bad mother on the first litter which has to be given to an older female rather to nurse, instead. But usually she'll be able to bring up her brood right the second time.

    • @SimplyBetta
      @SimplyBetta  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would bet money that yes, it is plenty strong enough. This ike shelf has like 4 evenly-spaced vertical supports and it's pretty heavy duty particleboard, more than the manufactured tanks stands you can get at petco.
