    I've been watching your channel in reverse order as I only recently came across it, but this video is perhaps the most comprehensive in explaining the processes hoofs go through. Working at a college, I can't help but think that if hoof trimming was to be taught, this should be the starting point. Chapter one, so to speak. Glad to have finally come across this video.

    I live in Wisconsin too! Finally a cow hoof trimmer that lives in Wisconsin! Lol. I love your channel. I like videos where you are scraping debris out of a cows foot. It is so satisfying watching you help cows that have, for example, stones packed inside of its hoof. Keep up the great work with the cows and your channel!

    See. I always wondered why cattle and horses owned by farmers needed their hoofs trimmed. Or see videos of neglected horses or donkies with these really weird grown, pointy hoofs, but horses who live in the wild don't ever have those issues. That makes so much sense. Thanks for the information!

    Black and white cows are soooooooo cute! I just love seeing a close up of their parts while they have their foot up in the crush. I had a tiny Westie that loved cows. She would cry for them to come close over to the car so that she could just stare at them. She's in heaven now and I'm hoping there are cows around her. She lived 1990-2007. RIP Opal-I love cows as well :)

    So informative! I watch all the hoof trimming channels and you are by far my favorite!! Best camera angles, smoothest cuts, sharpest knives, amazing knowledge, best music (no music at all 😂), most soothing voice and happiest looking cows! So happy I found your channel! I rewatch your videos until a new one comes out 😂
    I had a question. You said out in the wild, cows shed hoof naturally. Does that mean they have less issues (digital dermatitis, abscesses, double soles, sand cracks, etc) in nature? If they get those issues, are there natural ways the cows deal with those issues?
    Thanks again for your videos! I can't wait to watch the next ones! 🐮🐮

    • @NatetheHoofGuy
      @NatetheHoofGuy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      They do have less issues. In nature the weak ones would get weeded out. Domesticated animals are treated and protected so those animals genes stay in the herd. They also have natural ways of dealing with those problems and I’ll be covering that in another video. 👍

    I grew up on a farm. I don't recall our cattle ever having their hooves trimmed and now I know why. I'm assuming that the rise of CAFOs created the need for trimmers. Ever had anyone refer to your work as "bovine pedicurist"?

    • @NatetheHoofGuy
      @NatetheHoofGuy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Not CAFO’s per say but time in confinement. Dairies years ago primarily pastured the cows. CAFO has to do with size more so than the walking surface. Southern CAFO operations would be more similar to pasture cows with their lots. I refer to it as bovine pedicurist jokingly.

    For me it was very interesting to see people keep dairy cows on pastures. Im from an european country and here they are inside 👀... even when my grandparents had cows back in time they stood in the barn. A little earlier so like decades ago when my parents were little cows were herd to pastures every day and came back at night. But I see modern farms here and dairies are inside. I only saw beef being on pasture. But guessing smaller farms do the pasture for dairies aswell.

    • @helenabrown4471
      @helenabrown4471 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Here in Aus most dairies are pasture based and shedding is rarely used. We have to worry more about how to keep them cool in summer rather than warm in winter!

    • @NatetheHoofGuy
      @NatetheHoofGuy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Not necessarily. Look closely when they walk to make sure that their foot is contacting the ground evenly and the toes aren’t too long. If they’re on pasture all the time, likely not all of them anyway.

    Just like all animals in the wild their feet wear away something like the souls of shoes except they continue growing. Domestic dogs need their nails clipped every few weeks. Dogs in the wild have short nails that are short and rounded and never need clipped. This is part of the grooming humans must agree to if they want to keep their animals healthy and comfortable. I have a dog whose hair around his butt get matted between haircuts that traps poop gets gross.

    I think people also forget that our livestock isn't natural. We've been selectively breeding these animals for hundreds of years. They've been removed from their natural habitats and their natural predators. This comes up with horses a lot and can be super frustrating. People can be very pushy about 'natural' being the best way to treat any animal though. Natural isn't best and can even be detrimental to the animal. If you look at the feral herds of Spanish colonial horses you can really see how much they've evolved to fit their environments and how much they've changed from when they were originally brought over as domesticated riding horses. You can even still see a hint of that old-school baroque look in some feral mustang herds. The ones that didn't thrive fell out of the breeding pool and that doesn't happen now. Plus, a human's idea of what thriving is for an animal is usually different from what nature thinks is best.
