I don't know what it is about Carly's style of singing, her phrasing, tempo, pronunciation or perhaps a combination of these factors but together they really keep a person's attention riveted on the story of the song.
This lady is the consumate musician. I am an old guy of 75 now, but I started playing tenor sax when I was 16. One of the lessons my teacher taught me was that when you are learning a tune, you need to learn the words too and you need to learn to be singing the song in your head while you are playing it. His explanation was that you need to never forget that when you are plaing or singing you are actually telling a story. He told me that by singing the song in your head while you are playing keeps you connected to the story. I am sure that there will be plenty of musicians who are going to tell me this is nonsence, but I believe it. By the way I also believe that when you are playing or singing to an audience you need to be really focusing on telling some, one or even all of them the story but from your heart and from your gut - really feeling the emotion of the song. That is what Carly is doing. She is doing it so convincingly that when I listen to her singing songs like Moonlight Seranade she gives me goosebumps she makes me feel like her lover and she makes me feel the emotions too. That is the secret.

From the Allman Brothers to Frank Zappa... Jazz ...R&B... County (not the new stuff ) .... Hard Rock / Metal... And I wish I could get what some have... Tried.. But no luck .
I think that Carly Simon and Margaret Whiting are the only two female vocalists to ever get this song right. Tone, power, range, technique, tempo, it's all 'just right'.

So there’s a regular version and a “pledge drive” version of the DVD? Also, I remember catching Carly Simon’s performance of “You’re So Vain” from the concert when it aired on PBS. After the performance of “You’re So Vain”, if I remember correctly, the credits scrolled over Carly Simon’s original 1972 recording of the song while showing footage of multiple clones of Carly Simon lip-syncing to the song, whereas on the regular DVD that my dad bought in 2005, the credits scroll over live footage of drunks singing “You’re So Vain” at a karaoke bar.
Never appreciated Carly when I was young. How that has changed, as she sings the standards! If she recorded the entire American Songbook, I would buy them all! Great job Carly.
