Tumble at 55 rpms and reuse the polishing compound by finding 5 or 6 bottles of the same ounce capacity, use a funnel and just pour it into the next bottle, start with the one with the worst stain and progress to the one with the least stain. It saves time and money. I've been doing it for 20 years.

I was told the polish loses it's grit after 5 days or so which would be a 1 bottle turn. Is that incorrect?

Nice work....I've been a collector since 1972 and professionally cleaning bottles since 1989....There's not many instructional videos out there....thanks for posting....and "Yes" the Warner's did look like someone wiped their butt with it....there's nothing worse than sick glass !

how are you cutting the copper? i tried the little jig ive seen on a few bottle forums,however i cannot get it to work properly.any chance youd make a copper cutting video?
Good informative video. I've recently came across a place that is overwhelmingly packing with old bottles and I'm gonna start the clean out. I want to make sure I have a good way to clean them out. Do you think vibratory polishers could work also with the kind of media you have? I have a large vibratory tumbler and might as well use it if it works.
That's a great demo of cleaning the old bottles with crud on them. How often do the bottles break at low speeds? Can you tumble jars and at the lower speed as well? Is there any stores you recommend for purchasing a tumbler?

Up using the tumbler? I’ve heard a lot of people say they don’t use it because their bills go up a ton as you have to tumble one bottle for like 48 hours.

Does this work with square bottles too ? Does it just take longer and the abrasive doesn't roll around so nicely ?
I see this is from several years ago so I don't know if you'll see this, but I wondered how you close off the end of the tubes. I also wanted to ask about small triangular bottles. Someone online who tumbles bottles said you can't tumble a triangular bottle. Is that true? I have an Owl Drug Store blue poison bottle that's triangular and I would love to polish it up. Thanks.
That’s a great technique! To me it absolutely saves a bottle. Nobody in their right mind wants a sick bottle unless it’s an ancient black glass onion bottle. 🇬🇧
I'm in the process of building a tumbler, just looking for an appropriate motor.
I've got a spackle bucket full of really nice (some rare ones, too) but sick glass bottles. Hopefully will get them spotless! 👍

Now I'm intrigued! Question is, would you dare do this to a valuable dug bottle, as would be the case with valuable coins? Would the bottle loose any intrinsic value with this type of cleaning?
+gerald jernigan Bottle collectors are different than coin collectors, almost all bottle collectors want the bottles to shine like new.
For the copper bits, you just take 12ga. romex (for example) and take wire cutters and make thousands of cuts until you have a bucket full?

Ah the Warners Safe Cure . Still on my Wish List i'm afraid , and may possibly remain so . Uniess they Demolish more buildings on top of old Victorian Rubbish dumps in my town. .
Are they more 1870/80 ?
I have found bits here and there localy , but nothing as big as a Warners . Would you believe under the Village Green , and Packed under the pavement ( sidewalk ) not far away from the former . Possibly the oldest bottles in my collection if it's pre 1890's .

i had a round botrom bottle that i cannot find. I am hoping the little 80 yr old lady with the resale shop didn't steal it from me, when i had my back turned...yes, this does happen. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. You should get a 1/3 HP, 1725 RPM, continuous-duty motor with automatic thermal protection. Best luck to you!

Someone suggested I use a motor from a breadmaker, but I dunno....

I would not consider using a motor from a bread maker, I don't think it would last. 1/3 or 1/2 HP would be plenty. Best luck to you.

Excuse my ignorance but i didnt quite get the copper fill part. You said fill the BOTTLE half way with copper, then add water to half inch above the copper, then teaspoon of cutter. How much copper do you put outside the bottle in the pvc tube and how much water ? Thanks
It's the same on the outside, but the circumference is larger on the outside so you will need a tablespoon and a half or two tablespoons if you are tumbling large jars. Tumbling is polishing while taking the "sick layer" off the bottle. So on the outside it is the same:. Water 1/2 inch above but you need to double the oxide you choose to use to accommodate the larger circumference.

DDM Metal Detectives I purchased this machine back in 2006 from The Jar Doctor. You can build your own but I found it to be more of a pain than it's worth.

I've just learned that it takes value away by cleaning it. That's if you intend to sell. If not who cares what I just wrote, lol But what if there are embossed lettering on the bottle that has to damage it?????

What tumbler do you happen to use? And do you you recommend me to get a cheap or expensive one?
How many days would you polish the inside of a small 4" x 1 ¹/² " thin walled puff type bottle? It is a open pontil. I do not have any speed control so I run at around 60 rpm. I am using a pre-polish grit. There is very slight haze inside. The outside does not need tumbling.

Just make sure if you are tumbling anything other than round bottles you only tumble at 20-30 rpms or you risk breaking them.

does this tear up any paint or labeling on the bottle. I would really assume so. I can't find any method for effectively cleaning an old coke bottle that still has the paint on it
I have tumbled a few painted sodas on the outside. I was surprised it didn't take the paint off, but it didn't. Just do it for 10 hours and check it.

Great video. Are you using 1200 grit for your cutter?
Yes...if their really bad I use 1200, however, they make a 1500 now that breaks down to a polish that also works quite well.

It appeared it took 6 seconds to turn 10 times counting the white spot on the left

Why don't you just just use brass BBs instead of cut copper?
BBs are copper coated steel. Steel is bad for glass and you want edges to the copper not round.
Unless you did it on purpose you may want to enlarger the space between the L and the I in the intro with your screen name. I have the same problem on a drawing of a part called a FLICKER bar
