    I worked a lot of years for an OCD veterinarian, he instilled in us the mindset that Every.Single.Animal. has a disease that's fatal to the next animal you touch. I don't have near the number of snakes you do so mine are in terrariums. But I scrub my arms up to my elbows and use hand sanitizer and change shirts in-between holding my snakes. I can't help myself, I'm possessed. So I'm thrilled to see someone do a video about this. Thank you!
    And by god, that's your hose and you can sanitize it all you want 😁

    So what would you recommend for the following:
    Testing. When you are quarantining, how many times would you test a snake before introducing to your collection? 1x per 21 days for 3-4 times?
    Reptile shows. When you bring back snakes that didn’t sell... how do you quarantine? Completely separate racks for your “sale animals”? Would you setup a “sale area”, a “quarantine area”, and then your “holdback/broodstock area”? Could you have all 3 in the same room? Maybe separate rack sections into areas in the room? Just label totes of what’s being done?

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought hand sanitizer only deactivates bacteria by breaking the cell wall and it does absolutely nothing against viruses. Unlike soap and water the hand sanitizer also does not wash the contaminant off of you it just smears it around.
    Hand sanitizer also has no effect on parasites such as Cryptosporidium which is probably worse than any virus because it can hang around without a host for months and is not destroyed by any usual method.
    What I'm getting at is that washing your hands is probably superior to just about anything else you can do. =\

    Good job with the videos, we're always watching when new ones come out. On this subject though if you're worried about cross contamination in your collection when disinfecting hands and tools it all goes down the drain if you don't clean the counter in between putting snakes on it. I deal with cross contamination a lot being a tattooist and know if you leave one thing out of the sterilisation process it makes it all pointless. Anyway keep up the good work take care and stay safe 👍

    • @OlympusReptiles
      @OlympusReptiles  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True, didn't think of counter. On day to day work, I don't use it. But for filming, I certainly do

      @@OlympusReptilesthank you for reply, it was when watching your pied or axanthic pastel video I noticed it. I would say its more knowing the risk and dealing with it accordingly. Always quarantine away from a established collection and dont mix tools etc, disinfect hands, surfaces and tools when working with animals in quarantine, when they move over to main collection (family unit) they in theory shouldn't have any major issues to worry about so general cleaning/husbandry should be sufficient. Everyone should be checking their animals everyday so If issues do arise then isolate and treat. It can all get a bit too complicated when it doesn't need to be :) I would say even the biggest breeder set ups are very low risk as long as proper quarantine is set up and adhered to correctly and anyone come in from outside disinfects hands and arms before handling any animals 👍 we're only newbies to the hobby so only going off my business and all the risk assessments I've had to do as we're high risk with cross contamination. Take care and thanks for the great videos

    The majority of snake diseases are transmitted by mites. They are the vector for diseases like nido and IBD. Similar to the diseases ticks and mosquitoes carry and spread. Great video and way to open the conversation.

    Depending on what you are using to disinfect your hands depends on how long it takes to kill anything ON your hands. ie Virus, Germs, Bacteria etc. Gloves would be the 100% dependable choice. Change after each tub cleaning and snake handling.

    • @OlympusReptiles

      We are not using it for much more than hands. Except on a tool in between (definitely better than most doing nothing). However, any other disinfectant spray/wipe would work. Mainly, hands. Hands. Hands.

  • @teddydalton8507
    @teddydalton8507 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I'd be in favor of testing snakes when you buy them as well as quarantining. factor in the cost of a test as just part of the purchase price, if you're just keeping a few snakes and a nice collection and not getting new animals too often, then it's an infrequent expense like your dogs shots. If you've got a larger collection with multiple new animals every year you can consider it as an insurance policy, negotiate a bulk rate or go direct to the lab maybe, and best of all, write the expense off as tax deductible if you're breeding.
