  • Hey rabbits!
    Since I am German it's no surprise that I sometimes struggle saying certain English words. However, it's not only the long and complicated words that drive me crazy. Often very short, seemingly easy words are the ones I have the biggest trouble with.
    Thing, bowl, head, girl - these words don't appear to be difficult to say, but I always struggle pronouncing them.
    Find out why that is and what I think about these English words in today's video - featuring a very special guest, the amazing Dana from WantedAdventure as my native American speaker sidekick!
    Have fun!

    One of my professors is German. She's amazingly fluent in english, but she sometimes needs a reminder from people in the class on how to pronounce certain words when she can't remember exactly how to say it. I'm sure this probably happens to all people speaking their non-native language no matter how fluent they are!

      I had a French guest lecturer the other week and her English was almost accent-less. I thought she must've gone to high school in the UK or something. There was only one word that gave it away - "template", which she pronounced like a French word (i.e. like "tom-PLET"). It was quite funny.

      superanimefan275 Actually when you are switching between two languages it's pretty hard to get the right pronunciation. I am a native german and speak american all the time. I have always hard times to switch between the two.

      Had a neighbor in Greece who was from Cameroon who had married a Greek guy; She spoke excellent Greek but had a French accent-when she said her husband's name, 'Spiro' she always gave it a French inflection, 'Spighro'...kinda cute.

      Happens with the native languages as well. Time to time I have a hard time pronouncing certain things in Slovak (e.g. črta -- yes, this is three consonants and one vowel in two syllables, which are pronounced together: čr-ta; and even worse is čŕt, which is genitive plural of črta).

      Highly agree. Germans are aleo much more strict on how they speak. Englush has more curves lol. Being a mix of germanic, celtic and latin.. we dont care much as long as we can understand a person clearly. In germany, even if they understand you perfectly, they freak out and want you to say each word with 0 accent and like a square box style, no room for ANY" mistake " or difference. And when over there, they make fun of other german dialetcs and proclaim , "that isnt REAL german", if its in austria you better speak high german( hoch deustch) . And the austrians were more laid back, didnt care... they border and have much history with the baltics. But in germany... youre damned if you do n damned if you dont. Unless you speak 100% perfect , no accent... they will say something, in which had it heen in America, if we got you then we are good. They are very staunch on their own language. Its one of the oldest ( german) so, that's great, but even german has evolved from old german . It is kinda ridiculous.

    The Germans having difficulty with English is a bit ironic, because modern English evolved from Anglo-Saxon, so it's a cousin of German, and many words are closely related. I guess we can blame the French for all those difficult words :o)

      No, it is not only the French influence, Germans would have similar difficulties to pronounce Anglosaxon or medieval German as well. E.g. you find the "th" in those old German languages, but it has completely vanished in modern German (except for some of the northern dialects).

Repeatedly failing at combining the "ch" hiss in so many words (or doing so inconsistently). Trying desperately to roll my German "R". It took me years to learn how to roll the Spanish "R" and now I have to learn this again but using the other end of my tongue. The one important thing I learned though when learning how to roll my Spanish tongue is it took a couple years but I did it and can now do so confidently. The same can be assumed for my German pronunciation :) . I hope you feel the same with your own experiences.

      In WWII, US troops in the ETO would use passwords with the "w" sound such as "squirrel" or the "th" sound which were very difficult for a German tongue to wrap around, even if the infiltrator knew the password. In the Pacific, the password would contain an "l" sound, equally foreign to a Japanese tongue.

    German here too. I'd consider myself to be rather fluent, but I was reminded (more like being ridiculed by XD) by a student from the states (Austin, Texas) while I was abroad studying in Japan that I got some words totally wrong and I started to see a pattern: most often I found myself confused in pronouncing words with "v" and "w". For those that don't know german, we have a lot of words starting with "w" that are pronounced similar to the english "v". So when I start talking in english without focusing, I default to pronounce some words in a german way. Somehow I pronounced Vader, as in, Darth Vader, like the "w" of "world" and the "w" of "world" more like the "v" of "vader". Unlike in german, the "w" in english is formed by pursing the lips together and narrowing the mouth (don't worry, this is just phonetics 101) and the german formation is more in the centre without that narrowing of the mouth. I's not like I can't make those sounds, but the more I think about it the more confusing it gets and I have to repeat it several times. Not sure if this is a german thing or just my inablity with those consonants but making the sounds of the english "w" feels a bit unnatural for my tounge. And whenever I see english words with "v" my brain reminds my, "watch out, this isn't the german "v"" but the german vowel isn't so much different. Long story short, I pronounce words like "vicious" sometimes like "wishes" and that cracked her up.
    BTW nice cleavage.

    I enjoyed hearing your reasons for hating certain words. You remind me of some of my mother's struggles with English.
    I learned German and French as a little kid and then learned English, but before the language cutoff, so I have "no" accent in English. (Though I'm sure my Aussie, Kiwi, and UK friends will disagree.) Then I learned Southern American English, which I encourage you to try to learn. It will help smooth out all those rough edges that German seems to want. Here's a phrase for you to say in your best Southern Drawl: The beer is in the truck. Have the amazing Dana say it for you-she'll know the right attitude.

    I like what Danna (Dunna? The American!) said about accents. I'm from Utah and my mom, being from Montana, often gives me crap about how I say words like "mountain" and "pillow!" But I like it! My family's history is deeply intertwined with the history of this state and I like that my accent shows it! So I'm going to keep my "moun'ins" and "pellows" thank you very much!

    You made me laugh (yes there's that word) with this video. I think it is amazing that you speak English so well. Especially American English. I would think that since Germany is so close to England that your accent would be more British. I live in the US, or to be more specific, Texas. English in Texas is almost a different language altogether. I have many friends from South and Central America who speak Spanish. They constantly tell me that learning English is by far the most difficult thing that they have ever done. They say that English makes no sense at all. Sentence structure seems to be their biggest problem. I just wanted to say that I enjoyed your video very much. Keep up the good work.....Terry

      Terry Harrison british english we have to learn at school and it sounds so silly imao and yes the sentence structure is most of the time crude cause it's totaly wrong compared to german language

      That's funny because if you compare english with spanish, you'll realize that spanish is much more complex, for the average english speaker is harder to learn spanish that it is to learn english for an average spanish speaker.

    Trixi, your accent in English is fantastic and, I must agree with Dana, the accent you have adds a touch of charm and personality. Don't be in such a hurry to change your accent. Though, as Dana pointed out, I understand your personal desire to express yourself like a native. Just realize - you already do. The accent in your speech ...."is" you... your personality, ....your uniqueness. The way you pronounce the word and the intended word are so very close anyone can know what you're trying to say. Plus..... with your looks and charisma, you could be totally off on your pronunciation and it will still sound like poetry. 🐰

    My native language is English, I think you are actually amazing at pronouncing things the right way. I can barely tell that you’re saying them differently. So good job! I also am learning German and at times it’s too hard to pronounce things correctly, and the right phrasing in a normal speed of talking. So, i take my time since I don’t talk to anyone in german in person yet. It’s always over text. To me, my german would be slow once I know how to have a conversation in the language. I could maybe have a small talk with someone, but that’s it.

    You may prefer the British pronunciations. I'm American and the way we pronounce 'R's is supposedly very bizarre. The word 'girl' for instance is softer in a British accent--also, the 'a' in 'bad' would be the same as it is in German. It was so interesting to hear how you felt about the word 'however'. That's how I feel about French. There are so many vowels! For instance, the word 'happy' in French is 'heureux'--and the 'H' is silent. It's such a beautiful language, but I can't say their word for 'happy' without sounding like I'm about to vomit.

    😂😂😂I have the same issue. I'm not German, I'm Russian... but I have a hard time pronouncing a lot of words with the letter R in them. In Russian, R is much harsher/harder in pronunciation - in English it's much softer. You're not the only one 😭

    • @josejuangomez83
      @josejuangomez83 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Eva B. Fortunately for me, as an spaniard, the russian language shares the same "r" sound as spanish, so for me its easy to pronounce some russian words 😁

    • @benjaminpenaguin5484
      @benjaminpenaguin5484 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not sure how a ´rolled R’ can sound « harsh » lol. Dutch and German (it depends) sound harsh.
      And Russian is such a beautiful language. In French it depends on the person/region, it overall sounds pretty with the soft, expired R (kinda like the German R actually), but if it’s spoken in the northern/ch’ti way for example, it’s ugly and hilarious.
