There are a few ghost stories where the 'apparition' is a portent of the future.
But, as most future-knowledge stories tell us; the event cannot be avoided.
Numerous Celtic myths about gesa, tales of destiny, written long after the fact, are trying to tell us something about us not being allowed to know of the future.

We watch The Signalman every Christmas eve just before we go to bed, one of those weird traditions we have! Apparently it was featured in a compilation tv programme A Ghost Story for Christmas. There's something eerie about a train tunnel.... I grew up near a preservation railway, so the train whistles were a nice familiar sound of home...until the winter months when the light fades quickly, the last whistles sound like something alive in the dark... another childhood memory I have is when we had a heavy snow and icicles had formed along the edge of the tunnel mouth giving it teeth! Believe it or not none of this has traumatised me, but like I said, there is something a little bit spooky about an old railway line.

Beautiful (and eerie) memories. No wonder this story really connects with you. Experiences such as these when we’re young have such a profound effect, don’t you think.
