I know this video is over 3 years now. But would the same principle for the cobra Engine apply to the Mach 1 engine? Besides the fact Mach 1 engines were aluminum. Thanks for making this video.
they basicly the same engines until you get to the boost ( stock version ) cams changed a little.. All of these where Aluminum ( Aviator,Mark 8,Cobras, and Mach Mustangs )
I have a 2000 Ranger step side that I'm thinking about trying to drop a 4.6 mustang engine in. Maybe trying to catch an older one from when they came out originally. It currently has the original v6 with a 5 speed manual transmission.
I cant remember the title of the tv show but i saw a series on Motor Trend tv where the drop a Coyote 5.0 or a 4.6 in a ranger..Didnt take a ton fabrication
I like to buy running cars before they make it to the junker to rip parts from. Takes away a ton of the guess work. I picked up an 04 Aviator suv that run and drove but had no OD for a couple hundred bucks. The aviator engine, even if it needs rebuilt, is a fantastic bang for the buck.
I feel ya on the logic and its solid, but logic is more on the cheap side of things... I like to buy things from this yard cause they are good people... They are straight up with the motors ( if good or not good ) most cases they do not know and charge a the ( extraction fee ( only it seems ) most of these engines are bad ( 4.6 dohc ) here is one I got from the yard but I had to change the guides and timing chain th-cam.com/video/BHlDSH_Y9tM/w-d-xo.html
@@madmod Sorry for the late reply... Going to yard is sweet. Its cool to go when you NOT in NEED of a part or parts cause you will be so upset whne you do not find what you need.. So i am going just to go and see what they may have vs what I need to have
If you have a p71 the ecm will run and drive any of the modular v8's except any one with vvt . I would still tune it but you could drive it to the tuner. The main engine harness should work with the 32v you'll just need the injection harness. The murauder, Mach one and aviator engines are the same , the Mach one has cams more suited for the mustang and five speed. The thing is they are called modular for a reason. The 32 v only reads the intake cam gear just like the 2v , the firing order is the same, the maf size is the same, the injectors are close enough and for the most part the throttles are the same size. But the blocks , heads, belt drives, emissions, sensors all the other stuff is interchangeable for the most part. Bell housings are all the same, I think, but am not fully sure....the bores between the 4.6 and 5.4 are the same it's the stroke that's different...again I'm not too sure on that one, I know they did that with the 3.8 and 4.2 v6's so it's a bolt in swap for a 4.2 v6 mustang as it's the same block. The thing is it's stupid expensive to buy aftermarket parts for the mod motors but if a person does some homework they can build a good amount of power using factory Ford parts. Just like pi heads on a non pi block...that gets you like two points in compression and better flowing heads...that's simple horse power and torque.
police on police and the lincolns on lincolns ect.. some cars have different feature .. the engines are cool but the ecu systems are crazy do to the pats styles in OTHER cars other than the Police crowns
And maybe get a Stroker Kit to take that 5.0/302 out to a 348 :) with a 232/242 cam to help it breath... puts out a nice exhaust tune!... If anything do the Cam! You'll be very impressed with the results :) Ford heads have not so good exhaust ports and the extra 10 degrees helps... A Lot!
i'm loving your videos! but, i was wondering.....are there any downsides to the 5.4 as opposed to a 4.6? there are no real differences in the motors, is there?
Big downside you have to build the 5.4 ( sohc ) with better rods and get the a better oil pump...The problem also if putting it in passeger car will have issues cause the engine is taller and the hp made is nothing crazy...I will have to try something to debunk all that i mentioned... Its best to get a 4.6
got it. i should have mentioned that i'm swapping into a '66 F100.....so plenty of room. i've already checked. replacing rods is gonna break the budget if i did a 5.4. i've got an eye on a lincoln 4.6 DOHC. i'll just stay on that path. thank you!!
no problem brother I was just at the junkyard AGAIN I wanted to make sure everything is good ( motor wise ) but on the chevy side ls 5.3 are being taken out left and right ( nobody touching fords ) I love it... I have to make sure when a Truck comes in with a Coyote I will be the 1st to get it
thank you again for the comment Jon.. I am sure I left out a few things, but I want people to do what they feel, but think about what there are about to do ( and see what are your goals and wallet look like ) before the attempt of any swap
The 4.6 is a solid motor... But the 5.0/302 Windsor can be a cheap Beast of Motor... Add Cleveland heads and a 236 248 Cam and stand back and freak on the power:) and it's been around since the early 1960's :)
@@bstfordchannel923 I like Ford trucks I'm in the process of doing the 2v swap in a expedition I like to learn more about ford engine what books would you recommend I can get off Amazon or Ebay
I like the 4.6 4v but I wouldn’t buy it unless I heard it run . Pull the valve covers have a look and smell ..pull the cam cap look for scoring on the cap. Even pull the oil filter take it apart pull the plugs have a look . Especially if it doesn’t run . The Lincoln mark 8 ?! When it came out they opened the exhaust and did over 180mph with that engine 290.rated hp in a light car like the Mac that would be sweet . I’ve done heads on aviators and Lincolns generally the valve seats wear so I would go through the engine regardless. Very doable with 4000$ but tight .now 5.0 is easy especially if you got one from a explorer the heads are a lot better than the regular castings and if you know how to pick the right parts you could get well over 300 to the wheels with those heads . But you should still go through it . Turbo 5.0 from a explorer? That would be awesome for the maverick! 😬 there’s also transmissions you need to think about as well. Mark 8 donor car then get it tuned. Oh 5.4 is HUGE !
i pump my breaks just a bit all what you have mentioned i sat and thought about it Casey .. you are so correct head have to be done, then the bottom end. so will be money flashing around at the machinist or slowly looking for favors from people.. 5.0 in the maverick ( turbo ) well that sounds like a plan thus why i started to turbo the 4.6 figure what works and what doesnt.. I had that 5.4 dohc a fn whale of a engine lol.. I want something thats small but kick ass in power.. I have plan it has change twice.. 302 may be the best move
thank you for really seeing what i was trying to say without saying it. Now the engines performs differently ( from one another )at high rpm and Tq ( all mod motors work very well at high rpm ) and they take boost very very well. Ford engines take boost very well. it all falls into budget and taste and what is your the end goal and COST of doing what ever you where thinking.. simple math and thought
IMO, back to the basic point. Any fat cat can make more horses. 1000hp is no longer uncommon. Question: " how many horses to make the car worthy?" 290? 360? What are the "total" component cost difference? So what should the math formula look like? "How many hp per dollar can you make over some minimal declared threshold of say 290 or what ever that is that makes the project cool enough?" My #1 concern is cost of components to cause larger hp not to fail and that runs the entire length of the drivetrain. My #2 concern is what actually makes the car cool besides hp? Isn't it that "we built a really cool great running car for the least spent without some nasty detail left out in the end?" Tires Tranny suspension not matching hp? By the way, this was a superb well thought out vid with noticeable increase skills in editing. Thank You!
wow YOU SAID what i was trying to show ( but without ) spelling it out..YOU got the gist .. thats why i dance with ideas and say things, Its best to show examples of those that read dohc and think instant power gains..Not all the time big liter engine create power on a budget.. to do a coyote swap in your car will run you 6k min ending results maybe 400hp if you get the right simple mods.. 6k 400hp cool engine but its 400hp... and you will get spanked by MANY cars still.. many people chase hp, but not a well balanced car.. This comment is well needed and well respected.. Thank you so much for this brother L-Twig
I have been working on 3 of them now.. I ended up buying this motor ( bad move ) but I worked around it and bought 2 more right after that.. The issue is time and where to do this stuff cause its very cold out...Thank you so much for chcking the video Truman
351 canted heads and a cam will put u into the 400s at the rear wheels. its all about how well they can breath and push. the heads theyre using are smaller they are not canted and restricted. it be cheaper to buy the 351 head and upgrade the block to the heavier bolts. put in a good cam and be done with it. you can get another 40 hp if you port and polish the heads. roughly another 36 to the wheels.

@Sateg Llib exactly not to mention you gotta do heads cam intake to make similar or better numbers than a stock c head 4v with headers and exhaust. Not sure why people think the old 5 liter is comparable imo it really isn't. Stock vs stock bolt on vs bolt on or forged internals vs forged internals the 4v beats it in every way especially the ladder as they can make 1000+ wheel with forged internals a ls with a stock block easily.
@@bstfordchannel923 was thinking but between that post and now I found the Gremlins. Thanks though. If you know someone that wants a 4.6 4v wrapped in a cream colored mark, I have one
Man I was kinda disappointed with those 5.4 dyno numbers. Coyote would of been about the same price. My friends got a stock motor coyote 97 mustang. Gotta be 400whp. I’m thinking you gotta go boost and I like the 5.0 pushrod. Fast is fast. If it’s a old motor and still fast. It’s still badass.
this is why i have shown the Dyno numbers 9 i study a lot ) on the what IFs on engines and power plus dollars to get it to a point.. 5.4 is for tq and you have to dial things in and add certain things in to work,, Now a BOOSTED 5.4 is way different slight boost you ill see 400 easy no sweat est boost will be 14lbs ( a guess ).. 302 is still a amazing engine for what it does you can not doubt that.. Just here to make people think a little
A coyote is gonna cost more than a 5.4 swap even if you built the 5.4 with forged internals it wouldn't be too much difference one way or the other but a forged 5.4 can do 1000+ wheel easy. Gen 2 and 3 coyotes can do that on turbo setups but that is really pushing toward the top of what they can do on stock bottom while a forged 5.4 would live comfortably at 1000 wheel.
I have a 04 mustang gt with the standard 4.6 2v.. it recently went down but I been so lost what to do with it curious on swapping out the engine but which 4.6l should I go with ?
yeah man this is a hard deal...just get one out of a Low Mile vic and swap a few things from the old motor. Its tough to do a upgrade swap at this time junkyards seem empty Kev
Honestly, a 302 build would be a more reliable build. More cams more that can break. A 302 bored, .030 over and a about a 10: 1 compression. Shave the heads about 30th of an inch. New cam and crankshaft bearings. Forged crankshaft if you don't have it. Balance and blueprint. Turbos and superchargers are option after that... Not required.
hey brother I have not seen ya in a while what happening... You are correct the 302 is a mean engine and very simple to get the power as i have been shown now.. i have to choose very soon
if those aviators have DC head which is last revision they are 1500 for the pair, 1st revision on head was late 02 for the 03 vehicles DA DB DC all have revised head just DB DC are 9 thread DA is 4
Do you know of any standalone imrc controllers? I'm Midway thru putting one of these 4vs in a 1997 F150 and for now I just wired them open but I would like to get them operating
what you could have done was take the wire harness from said car you got the engine from to run those flaps.. Everyone uses the delete plates to make that happen. Thats why i never did the 3v swap cause of these little issue. it would seem i have dig into the motor to add hp goodies to make this work in my favor
@@bstfordchannel923 I have the full harness and ecu but the issue is that it's a 94 so it's an OBD1 setup, and it uses vaccum and electronics to run them. I suppose one option would be get a 96-98 cobra manifold, harness, and later Mark8 ecu, and just repin the truck and use the Mark ECU to run the electronic IMRC, but I was hoping to be able to use a little home engineering to avoid all that expense.
Now you have to build it to your liking. Now if you go to the yard like the one in the video . This engine was 150 complete so you have idea what you are working with.. you want a complete motor brother
iwell for what you are doing you need a wire harness from a 2007 Cobra would be a good starting point. THEN you can get a motor like this and get the mustang mounts and the oil pan if using aviator stuff... Its will be tough but do your homework and it can be done .. Figure automatic harness or 5 speed harness

If you must go with a 4.6l, you don't want the DOHC versions. Stick with the PI, 2V's, far less trouble and the small power difference between the 4v and 2v is not enough to worry about.
I agree i did not get the motor some how i am not feeling the dohc... even had a 5.4 dohc and i sold it cheap... 4.6 2v i will make do Johnny like you said
Not enough to worry about? A stock long block 4v can do 450 rwhp pretty easily and a fbo 4v ecsp a c head one can go well above 300 to the tires na while a fbo cammed 2v with ported heads can't even reach that. The difference is pretty significant and if you build the bottom end on both the 4v can make way more power with boost way easier on a stock long block. The difference is significant I'm not sure why you think it isn't.

No one has ever claimed those to be crap.. the 3v 4.6 3v 5.4 engines had the cam phaser and timing component issues along with spark plugs would break in the heads.. .. the 2v & 4v spark plug issue came from people over tightening the spark plugs damaging the threads or trying to change the plugs when engine is hot .. but for the most part its not a common thing or huge issue like the 3v engines .
A 4v smokes a 2v in every way and they're every bit as reliable. They don't have cam phasers and most of them don't have any type of spark plug issues. Sounds like you're lumping the 4.6/5.4 3v in with all the 4v after all they're all the same thing right? Wrong!!!
I'd love to see that 5.0 in the Vicky :) And it will be cheaper per HP to build... plus tons of parts!
This is coming bro in thought i have to plan it out
And maybe get a Stroker Kit to take that 5.0/302 out to a 348 :) with a 232/242 cam to help it breath... puts out a nice exhaust tune!...
Its best to get a 4.6
got it. i should have mentioned that i'm swapping into a '66 F100.....so plenty of room. i've already checked. replacing rods is gonna break the budget if i did a 5.4. i've got an eye on a lincoln 4.6 DOHC. i'll just stay on that path. thank you!!
Perfect timing on this video was gonna go to the junkyard to get a new motor soon
Oh no. What happened?
I guess your engine noise wasn't just the timing chain tensioner.

Oh, OK.
no problem brother I was just at the junkyard AGAIN I wanted to make sure everything is good ( motor wise ) but on the chevy side ls 5.3 are being taken out left and right ( nobody touching fords ) I love it... I have to make sure when a Truck comes in with a Coyote I will be the 1st to get it
For sure I’m thinking of just saving and picking up a coyote instead
Very informative and tightly edited👍
thank you again for the comment Jon.. I am sure I left out a few things, but I want people to do what they feel, but think about what there are about to do ( and see what are your goals and wallet look like ) before the attempt of any swap
The 4.6 is a solid motor... But the 5.0/302 Windsor can be a cheap Beast of Motor... Add Cleveland heads and a 236 248 Cam and stand back and freak on the power:) and it's been around since the early 1960's :)
ahhh brother you just have to wait on it lol.... I have few ideas in serous thought
@@bstfordchannel923 I like Ford trucks I'm in the process of doing the 2v swap in a expedition I like to learn more about ford engine what books would you recommend I can get off Amazon or Ebay
Do you know a shop that rebuilds 4.6-4v Ford Motors?
I snagged a whole driving mark viii for $600. Psyched for the swap.

thank you for really seeing what i was trying to say without saying it.

Hey how about a video on the 6.8 v10 2v and 3v...
Cool !!
There are a lot of 5.0 builds out there, but there aren't many 32v mod builds yet- I'm all about them though, as they sound pretty sweet at full tilt-
I have been working on 3 of them now..

Until the block cracks at 500 while a 4.6 block can go well over 1000hp
@Sateg Llib exactly not to mention you gotta do heads cam intake to make similar or better numbers than a stock c head 4v with headers and exhaust. Not sure why people think the old 5 liter is comparable imo it really isn't. Stock vs stock bolt on vs bolt on or forged internals vs forged internals the 4v beats it in every way especially the ladder as they can make 1000+ wheel with forged internals a ls with a stock block easily.
Have a 96 Mark viii that runs great and a 07 king ranch that runs like crap. Is there enough torque to motivate the pick up?

Just here to make people think a little
I expected more. I know a guy making that torque (378) on stock internals, stock exhaust manifolds, just a intake manifold swap and a tune.
Ken Bjonnes went 10.6 in a 3k lb Mustang with 360rwhp on a 2v 4.6. What are doing with the car and do you really need more power than this?

A 4v smokes a 2v in every way and they're every bit as reliable. They don't have cam phasers and most of them don't have any type of spark plug issues. Sounds like you're lumping the 4.6/5.4 3v in with all the 4v after all they're all the same thing right? Wrong!!! Obviously you don't know what you're talking about. 4.6 and 5.4 4v came in 96-04 cobras, 03-04 Mach 1, 03-04 cobra, 2000 cobra r, 07-14 gt500 (5.4/5.8 which is just a bored out 5.4 4v) all these engines are solid and none have the issues you speak of.
and be sure to rebuild those injectors lol guaranteed it was junked because of zero maintenance.

Modulars were a joke
performance wise yes, but for everyday car sales ( they made a lot of money ) its like how many different pizza you can make from just a plain pie.. Now the Coyote is the flavor of the month so you see they never made a 5.8 version of that engine or a 5.4 ( why ) it wouldnt be nothing to talk about.. But then again why
