I think that it is unacceptable that ASUS continue to sell a product that has a potentially fatal flaw.
If ASUS valued their customers they would not continue to sell a ticking time bomb.

They weigh the potential cost benefit of either continuing to sell or issuing a recall-either way they have a PR headache, and if they recall they're effectively announcing to the public that they screwed up, which tends to have a lasting impact on company image. You'd hope that they'd take that PR hit in return for presenting a consumer-friendly image, but sadly, investor-driven corporations very rarely lean that way.

No, it's not okay to continuously sell a defective product under any circumstance. For MSI and XFX, it's more or less okay because they're not defective, they were somewhat poorly designed. A discount there is fine as long as you're taking steps to also fix the core issue.
For Asus though, one of the biggest players in the tech industry, to only discount the defective product, offer no fix to affected buyers, then go on to sell their 5600 XT lineup at a $40-50 premium (the Asus tax), is just tone deaf.
Asus, and really any manufacturer, needs to remember that you're only as good as the products you sell. As far as I'm concerned when it comes to Radeon GPUs, Asus is the worst brand to consider.

Isn't there some law that should prevent Asus from continuing to sell this card? It's a broken product. Imagine all the casual/average gamers who have no idea about this issue. They don't follow tech news etc. They simply go to the store, decide they need an upgraded GPU, buy the card and then install it. They play some games. A some point in the near future their system starts crashing. They have no idea if it's the GPU, cpu, memory, software etc. that's causing the issue. Asus is going to cause a lot of headaches for these customers. Shame on Asus, what a terrible company.

Asus is back on form with a lot of their X570 boards, but I know some people were having issues with their B350, B450 and X470 boards. And i agree, it's not so much the fact that they made a bad product or made a screw up, it's how they handle the aftermath of it. If they deny fault, try to pass the blame or just seem unbothered by the fact that they screwed up, that says a lot about a company. In the case of delivering a brand new car that does run and can get you from A to B, but the coolant spills over and could cause irreparable damage if you drive for to long, would be cause for a recall.
in the case of delivering a brand new gpu that does run and can play games but the video memory overheats and could cause irreparable damage if you play for too long would cause for a discount?
"it has a problem that would have stopped someone from buying it if they’d known about it"
I still don't even see public disclaimers on the products available for sale, you can still sell something defective, as long as its disclosed.
ASUS sound like their trying to do the bare minimum, a company that gets that large would feel this is but a forgivable mistake.
XFX see this as brand tarnishing and would go above and beyond to win back the trust of their customer.

It's honestly pretty surprising to me that we haven't heard anything about a potential lawsuit about this yet. The defective nature of this product is certainly more damaging to consumers than the GTX 970's deceptive marketing, although I suppose the class in this case would be much smaller given that it's just this one model of graphics card from a single board partner, as opposed to the GTX 970 which was a popular GPU used in many different models of graphics card across several manufacturers. That would mean the law firm taking the case on would be getting a slice of a much smaller pie, so there's less incentive to take it on.

I guess at an even lower price, the TUF could be perfect for enthusiasts who like to and have experience tinkering with coolers. Couple your solution with a slight underclock and undervolt tweak and it should be a cool and quiet card worth a little less than the rest of the 5700 XT lineup, but at a lower price. That is, of course, if the price comes down further as it really ought to for what is otherwise a defective product. It should be sold at a discount reflecting that.
EDIT: The remaining TUF stock should either be tweaked by ASUS before being sold or be clearly labelled at retailers as partly defective parts. A simple discount is not acceptable imo.
As for the 5700 XT saga, is this the end then? No more? That's a pity. I'd just started missing them.

Just did major modding to my pc and modified the heat spreader too. currently have been running folding@home for half and hour,

    core: 69C-71C
    Memory: 100C
    VRM core 72C
    VRM Mem 1&2: 55C
    GPU hot spot: 95C
Automatic undervolt from Radeon Adrenalin applied at 1149mv target.
I thermal glued a lot of tiny pure copper heatsinks on the spreader where-ever they fit. At least me temps arent over 108 anymore. Peak has been 102.
Not as drastic as yours, but mine is a heavy compute load too, not gaming or "real world."
However, mobo and gpu both needed bios updates for not crashing. And to mount it up in a way it actually worked, the gpu heatsink really needs spacers under the spring loaded screws.

First off, THANK YOU for doing what you do so that the rest of us know more about what is and what is not the better products for our money!
Second, in the jobs I have had during my life one saying stands out: It only takes one 'aw shit' to erase 50 'atta boys'. XFX and Sapphire have treated me very well in the past by standing by their products. As a result they have my loyalty. Conversely, other brands who did not stand by their products have earned my scorn and I not only avoid them when considering what my next purchase will be, I advise against them because of my past experience.
I know business is about making money but over my life, in my fifties now, I have seen too many companies opt for the quick buck instead of the long term viability at the expense of their customers. I think that is a sad business model and I remember them for the rest of my life. I also remember who has treated me well. I can only hope that more businesses will see the value of investing in their customers even when the numbers say it costs too much in the short run.

Thank you for doing this Steve, I very much appreciate the time you put into this issue.
I'm unfortunately stuck with one of these graphics cards. While trying to get Asus to do something to fix these cards, I let them know that MSI and XFX both offered fixes for their faulty graphics cards. I receive the regular "we're sorry you're having trouble nonsense" but no actual help or fix.
I'm extremely disappointed in how ASUS has handled this and they've basically turned me off their products for life. Every one of these cards should be recalled and they should stop selling them immediately. I feel sick when I think that I spent $600 (cad) on this card. I remember saying to my girlfriend that I hadn't seen a review on them but how bad could it be, ASUS should know how to make a decent graphics card. Well I guess I've learned a hard and expensive lesson, never buy anything before you see review.

I once had a prebuilt PC with an out-of-the-box overheating no-name brand GTX 1060.
I used that PC for a year, until I realized the GPU wasn't using all of its performance, because it was thermal-throttling to a save 83°C. The VRM didn't have any heatspreader at all.
I bought a custom GPU cooler, Arctic Mono Plus, and the temperature was an amazing 50°C under full load, card was no more throttling & performance much improved, and a quieter fan.
thought: Why is the thermalpad in the video so thick? Shouldn't those be as thin as possible for maximum heat-transfer to the heatsink?

GDDR6 is flipchip, meaning you can cool it just as, if not more effectively, through the rear of the PCB. As in, you can throw heatsinks where the backplate would go on the opposite side of the GDDR6 to get temps down, people have done this mod with watercooled 5700 XTs. I reckon that would be a much quicker(though not as pretty) fix without even having to open the GPU up.

although you'll need to put some thermal pads on the memory chips which will be covered by the mounting plate and paste some 0.5x1cm heatsink on the part of the memory chip that's not under them GPU cooler's mounting plate for optimal cooling.
AMD GPU has some memory modules that goes into the GPU cooler mounting area that would screw their cooling performance if you didnt put thermal pad(so it got contact to the GPU cooler mounting plate) AND heatsink on them when you decided to replace the stock GPU cooler with HSF GPU coolers.
