- He is one of music’s most prolific singer-songwriters and now the origin story of Bob Dylan is coming to a theater near you in “A Complete Unknown.”
Timothée Chalamet gives a career-changing performance as the iconic folk singer. The movie takes place over a four-year period, from the time Bob Dylan arrived in New York’s West Village with his guitar and revolutionary talent to his rise to fame to the controversial choice that culturally reverberated worldwide.
“The preparation didn’t feel like preparation. This was like a years-long process of osmosis that I'm terrified to even say goodbye to now,” Chalamet said.
“What attracted me to this movie from the beginning was this question of genius, how it taints and changes your relationships with everyone you love or hate or meet,” director/writer/producer James Mangold said.
“A Complete Unknown” also stars Edward Norton, Elle Fanning, Monica Barbaro, Boyd Holbrook, Dan Fogler, Norbert Leo Butz, and Scoot McNairy.
In this look behind-the-scenes at the film, the stars and filmmakers discuss the music, the time period and what made Dylan a legend and how they brought this story to life on screen.

This whole movie blew me away. Damn. I cant wait to see it again.
Agreed. This is Timothee’s Oscar to lose, full stop.
Saw it yesterday. Loved it.
Me too!
Saw this film on opening day. 66 year man here; cried when the story was sad and again when he triumphed. It's a great story told in a great way. Well done!
If you're not a Boomer, I don't see how a person can put it into context.
You had to be there.
Loved it from the beginning to the end. Timothée that Oscar is yours.
Monica barbaro also deserves oscars.
Should be !!
Phenomenal doesn’t describe his performance he was BobDylan u thought u were watching Bob Dylan the whole cast was incredible! Elle was perfect Norton. Everyone
Oh yes, that award should be important. Timothy is fantastic , working so hard to teach playing guitar and harmonika and singing, tracking all the music - the most important thing is the celebration of Bob Dylan genius. Timothy is proud of it he said.
But keep our fingers crossed.
Best wishes from the Czech Republic 🍀
Timothee Chalamet is such a brilliant young actor. His career has already spanned a broad spectrum of characters, and he inhabits the characters he portrays. Brilliant.
A star is born.
This movie was nothing short of amazing. I am a songwriter and perform down in the West village for years and knowing that Dylan started there is always an inspiration. Tim really plays his character well. his voice is close to Dylan but better. It really helps showcase the songwriting of Dylan in the times where it was so pure. Bravo to all that worked on this movie. WOW thank yoU!
He was Bob Dylan. As close as you could possibly get. I felt like I was actually watching Dylan. 👏🥰
I'm a huge Dylan fan. Timothee you did a great job playing this musical genius and poet of a century.
Can we talk about Edward Norton as Pete Seeger? Incredible.
Yup.
he was amazing as well~~
What a transformation! Right on!
I saw this to see how Pete was portrayed and Ed Norton did a wonderful job. I won’t mind seeing a separate film of Pete AND Toshi-Toshi as she really was: a force of nature.
I knew he was in it and he’s always great in whatever character he plays, but I had forgotten that he was in it and didn’t even recognise him as Seeger. I just thought the actor playing Seeger looked vaguely familiar.
Best of the year by far . All the actors simply just NAILED it. Amazing dedication to their craft.
This is one of the best 'behind-the-scenes' programs ever made. It is so comprehensive, covering practically every significant aspect of the making of this film, and candidly so.
Absolutely! Spot on..kudos to On The Red Carpet producers and editors! Oscar material..I was Bob's next door neighbor on Pt Dume Malibu for 5 years..Never saw him but heard him rehearsing with Petty among others...
Saw this incredible movie on Sunday. This movie brought back so many great memories from my younger days. This movie, its actors, cast members and all involved deserve multiple Academy Awards! An iconic movie for the ages!
TC was incredible!!!! His dedication and talent makes me weep. I'm sure he will win an award.
Timothee Chalamet is pure talent and a remarkable human being. Seeing many of his movies and each one he gets more professional, centered and damn great. Seems we are all born with talent and yet when someone like this works and works hard and then harder, the talent just seeps from his veins. Look forward to the movie!
Saw the movie for Christmas, never been to the movies on Christmas before. Loved the movie!! Timothée was just amazing ❣️❣️👏✨🥰
Just saw this film a couple of days ago. I am at the age that started to recognize him having been born as a later boomer. I was able to sing along quietly because they were very a few people in the theater. I can’t wait to see it again.
We share a common experience. Born in 60. Saw it today. 10 people in the cinema for matinee. Can't wait to see it again. When it arrives online, I'll buy it and watch it often.
I’m a 65 year old Midwestern man. Have always loved music. Been a Neil Young fan since 72. I’ve always been a fan of the ground breakers. From the first trailers I saw ,been looking forward to this movie. I wish I could properly describe the feelings I got when that first bar of Like a Rolling Stone on the organ started. The hair on my neck stood up. It was so perfect.
I want so bad for the world to love this movie as much as I did. I want it for Timothee, I want it for Pete Seeger, I want it mostly for Bob, even though I’m sure he doesn’t really care.
This was such a period in time, with a genius just getting started on his way. Embrace the memories.
Excellent film. Great acting and the music was spot on.
Dylans greatness is captured and released, his words sparkle true.. then..now.. and will forever!😊
This movie was beyond incredible
Cool. Good to know. Thanks. 😊
I liked that Seeger and Dylan are portrayed as being in opposite camps at the end of the movie but neither are portrayed cartoonishly as the bad guy. It was much more nuanced.
It's a tremendous performance among several other really fine acting efforts. Strong casting in general. Mangold is very good at his craft. I enjoyed it all.
A complete Masterpiece.
That’s a great comment
i wanted to applaud out loud after every performance in the movie. i am a huge Dylan fan and it was exhilarating to watch Timmy’s brilliance!
Best film of the year by far
Just saw A Complete Unknown yesterday on Christmas. I’m a huge Dylan fan. I was a little girl when he was getting started. My mom told me a lot about Bob Dylan, my mom was 25 when he came on the scene, I remember knowing that he wrote Puff The Magic Dragon, Blowing In The Wind and Tambourine Man, though others made them popular, but I really love Tom Thumbs Blues, Girl From The North Country, Like A Rolling Stone. My best friend and I went to see Don’t Look Back, when we were 16, it was such an Experience. I hated how he treated Joan in the UK, but that’s Dylan, he’s a genius, as Joan sang in Diamonds and Rust, “You burst on the scene, the unknown vagabond, the unwashed phenomenon, heading straight for my heart”. Timothée deserves an Oscar, a Grammy, though the his portrayal of Paul Atreides in Dune 2 was fantastic too.
...but he didn't write Puff t MD.
@@donsteinberger1785 Peter Yarrow wrote it.
The movie was wonderful. ❤
I just saw the movie. He is absolutely brilliant !
AND THE ORIINAL MUSIC?
@jeffsinclair4412 Same here. And I agree.
@keithjackson5128 I was listening to the original versions weeks before the movie came out . And I'm so glad I did . Now I go back n forth to Free Wheelin and Highway 61' now.
Best movie of the year by a mile.
This reminds me that I am at the point in life where my American icons are gone and being recreated in movies. Happy the best of us is moving forward into a new generation.
He’s the best young actor we have
Very well done..! Me 67 like it so much that a group of people took the effort to make this movie! Since there was little or nothing to see during the 60's and '70s especially when one lives in Europe! Btw love all the instruments/mikes & esp. '30s Martin 00-45! And that chair in their appartement. And at min. 12,26 a fabulous '65 Plymouth Valiant Signet Convertible..
When you factor in the degree of difficulty in preparing for these roles, it's hard to imagine these actors not sweeping The Oscars next year.
Dylan is 3 yrs my senior. We both enjoyed the ' Bohemian ' village . Our business was close to that astonishing scene , Cafe' Wha and the gritty , but welcoming bars. I was naive until I discovered his affecting , prophetic and disarming lyrics. Coupled with an arresting and FEARLESS persona. He was IT, in NYC...then all over this world . He brought it, and our ears loved it. This " UNKNOWN " captures the essence of my 20's , led by an ineffably great cast. Congrats to the hundreds who brought this into the can ! Bravo !
Very well said!!
Looks like Timmy does a fine job of portraying Dylan. Looking forward to seeing it.
Great movie, the attention to detail was incredible. Only flaw I spotted was the Burlington Coat Factory sign in one shot. Didn't open their first location until 1972!
My wife and I saw this movie on the day before the scheduled release. It was as enjoyable and thought provoking as 'Back to the Future' was in 1985.
The next time this channel shows Timothée Chalamet and clips from this great film it will be when he's on the red carpet at the Oscars in March. 👉
Keep our fingers crosed ! 💚
About time they made a movie of the master poet
I watched this film on Xmas day alone in a theatre half full. I cried, i laughed and was left wanting more!
One thing that i didn't care for was at the end of the film i had to read words (not the credits) on the theatre screen.
Can you elaborate, please? I'm not sure what you mean.
@StonefieldJim4 if you watched the film "A Complete Unknown" you might remember at the end there were words on the movie theatre screen describing what Bob Dylan went on to do, etc. That is the only thing I disliked about the film.
He deserves an Oscar! Brilliant acting! Great movie!
Timothée Chalamet is a Phenomenal talent❤️
Edward Norton did a phenomenal job
They did it 💯
Saw it twice and I going again
Beautiful film❤❤
"$35 pays your rent on Bleeker Street" - Bleeker Street from the 1964 Simon & Garfunkel album, Wednesday Morning, 3AM. What's become of the Village is a shame. Bob Dylan, his music, the people who moved in and out of his life, the zeitgeist and the Village as I remember it as a teen, I haven't seen this movie yet but there is no doubt in my mind that I'm going to love seeing the recreation of that time and place.
I saw the movie twice, first time on Christmas Eve. I relate with it in so many ways. It really is like going back in time and I just wanna stay there. I'll be 73 this year.❤ It should win all the Oscars!
That was a great movie
1965, the inflection point. No going back, no goodbyes.
Outstanding!! Thank you--!
Oh! I just love hearing stories like this. You both are simply made for each other. Congrats on a beautiful adoption of a beautiful being!!
I cried and smiled, just loved this film! 72 years old, love the nostalgia.
We need more covers of Bob Dylan!!!!
can't wait to see todays christmas treat!!!!
Amazing performance amazing movie
It was really well done
Great movie, Great acting.
Saw this movie two days ago...Still thinking about IT !! Loved!!! 🙏🌹♥️
It's like a lingering buzz
Unbelievable chemistry between these very talented actors. I earlier questioned chalamet choice of playing Dylan. Really risky one might think? And then I saw this young man completely crush this role. What a triumph of course for mangold and his team.
Loooved, loved the movie…
Thanks for sharing. Seen it twice. Really enjoyed this movie.
Austin Butler should have had a cameo as Elvis just so he could say "may thy guitar chip and shatter" :D
Couple days ago my wife asked to go see a movie. Now she rarely watches movies much less ask to go see one. This movie was so good and very ausome she wants to see it again! Times sure are changing! Go see it I recommend it and so does Sherry my wife!!!!!
Mind blowing! Loved it!😎✌️😎
Incredible movie! Brought me back to the sounds of my youth! Unlimited awards for this gem!!
Bob to the Future, 1965 Newport Folk Festival 🎸:
"I guess you guys aren't ready for that yet. But your kids are gonna love it."
Excellent movie
Superb acting
Great movie. First one I've ever seen that actually looks and feels like the 60s I remember. Not once did anyone say, "Far out!" like most films. Clichés. The 60s weren't a cliché. They were alive. With people who were alive. This film showed that.
Great movie. Really loved it. All the actors were amazing. 😊
What a lovely movie. Brought me back to my youth.
Must be the best Oscars many Oscars and also doku very good looking forward ❤
Look for a film called BEAUTIFUL BOY... Chalamet's best work ever... Heart wrenching! True story. Steve Carrell plays Chalamets Dad, who was the last person to interview John Lennon... 3 days before Lennon's murder!
That's a gift from God to be able to perform a star so well! 😊
One important person from those years who is missing is Ramblin' Jack Elliott, who helped Dylan get started in the coffee house scene in Greenwich Village. Jack, who was known as "the Brooklyn Cowboy," recreated himself in the image and voice of Woody Guthrie and Bob started out in his folk career the same way. I believe they had a falling out at some point and wonder if that's why Jack was not even mentioned in the movie. He would have been a great addition.
Same with Liam Clancy.
Don’t I wish this is Bob Dylan today- young Bob Dylan
Great video
He better get the Oscar!
Just WOW!❤
Oh my goodness! ❤
A brilliant film. Loved it!!!
THIS MOVIE IS MAGICAL 🙏 OSCARS WELL DESERVED ❤❤❤
Today it is pure Bob Dylan
I can't wait to see this movie... Bob Dylan was spinning on the record player every day when I was a kid.
Just waiting for my social security check to deposit!
The young person who comes to the city
Best movie of the year ❤
With his compounds and exotic cars
Damn the actors sang better together than the real Dylan and Baez!! 2 of my idols! What a FABULOUS FILM!!!!
The desk and marble coffee table including the mattress
Timothée chalamet a great actor…actor Newtonplaying Pete Seger is great too.
Be SURE toSEE this fantastic movie about one of the most creative, spectacular people God ever blessed the world with. Can’t say enough…. SEE IT!!!
Magical no more
Incredible
🧡Love🧡this🧡video🧡
Simply loved it.
I have heard a lot of the comments made in the movie from you tube videos and Chalomet does not sound like Dylan though it is close enough you can probably imagine yourself there
It's clear that marketing is getting super behind this movie. If you do want to know about Dylan there is lots of you tube videos on his early years. No one seems to care about his music after say 1977
God, I hope he wins the Oscar.
No more boxes now he is the captain
Of the ship
great song
❤love this movie!
Once upon a time he really existed
