That turned out really good! I'm impressed with how simple the structure is and how well the painting made it look like leather! The tinfoil technique helped a lot but the paint and finishes sell it!
Love this! I am making it for my husbands Halloween costume. Your video says you can make this hat for around $5, I suppose you can if you already have all the supplies but it's pretty pricey when you don't have any of the supplies. I am still going to make it though since it's WAY better than anything I have seen for purchase online.

An awesome tutorial over what should be a simple design. Quick question on the plastidip: how did you apply it, if at all, in the areas where the brim is glued to the dome?
Thanks! The Plasti dip really only needs to be in wear areas on the outside. if I can’t get it to cover under the brim or hard to reach areas I just paint that by hand with some black acrylics 👍

Thanks! As of right now my products are exclusive through Blick Art Materials in the US I know Poly Props sells decent foam overseas not quite as good as mine...but better than floor mats

AaArRghh!!!, gonna feed ´ta sharks with ´ye!!! -o- Now, that was great!, but could you please teach us how to make a pirate hook or an old gun to fit that nice hat? THANKS!! Pd: I think toilet paper tubes can work to make the guns canon, and maybe cardboard could work for the hook.
Wouldn’t it be easier to texture the pieces before assembling the hat? Or does doing it once assembled have a purpose, like helping direct the look or preventing damage when assembling?
If you add texture with heat you can’t heat it again or the texture will disappear. So if you have to heat form the pieces for the top of the hat or brim you can’t. That’s why texture is added after its fabricated
@@SKSProps Ah, that makes a ton of sense, thanks for the speedy response! You’d be able to reheat and retexture it if the texture did come out when assembling? Obviously not after paint, I’d imagine the paint probably wouldn’t react well to the heat, and the texture probably wouldn’t take through it anyway.

The annoying side of this video is that even though I've never worked with EVA foam, I now want to get all those tools to make this... 🙈 amazing tutorial, thank you!!

Working with foam isn't hard. My very first project was a Dragons egg from punished props. It make you wonder what other materials you can work with. I eventually moved up to Leather. I've recently made some shoes which combines the use of both materials :D
funny thing is leather workers are not using the correct material either, those hats are typically made from animal fibers that are treated in oil and wax that results in an leather look
I would like to use this pattern to make my son a hat as he's obsessed with Jack Sparrow. However, my printer does not have a poster option. What are the dimensions of the poster option your reference in the video? Thanks!
You need to follow the directions on my site and open the pdf in adobe acrobat or adobe reader and click poster in the page size area that scales it properly over several sheets regardless of your paper size

nope, but check out my friends punished props they did one simialr for sea of theives a while back you could probably manipulate

I’d recommend a heat gun. But you can get them cheap on Amazon or at harbor freight
You should do a barbossa one
it would be the same basic pattern you just don't pin up the edges
