Wow, Alicia de Larrocha was excellent teacher too! This is truly precious insight into achieving nuanced coloring that makes one forget that piano is percussive instrument. She is so meticulous and patient in her teaching what usually appears as the magic, since the fine combination of refined details of touch and rubato is usually intuitive and hard to translate and pass down. But, this demo gives a perfect glimpse into “technology” of achieving intricate sense of sonic aura in impressionistic style. I was very lucky to witness her last performance at San Francisco Symphony with farewell fanfare. It was both spectacular and sad to realize the end of carrier of concertizing pianist, since she was in great shape. But, of course, there is a very challenging side of being a concert pianist that is behind the scenes - the travels for allow to deliver the spectacle on stage. Most audience members are clueless about how challenging such life of traveling musician is, despite the level of their fame, since there are so many little, important details that are critical and can go wrong at the last moment, if the involved people are not as meticulous at their part of the job… But performance has to go on nevertheless , thanks to unbeatable toughness of very sensitive musician at the hands of people in hospitality services, who often have little to do with music and the meaning of what it takes to deliver its complexity…
I ve seen almost every great pianist give masterclsses several t.v. appearances even early ones of larrocha but never seenher teaching before. Wonderul to find this !
