Ok guys sorry for the confusion with the metric conversions. To clear things up, 4,000,000 centimeters is about 40,000,000 millimeters. I hope that helps!

My grandad lived on little Diomede as an elementary school teacher with my grandmother. He lived there during the cold war era so he had a lot of great stories. He said that he could see soviet spies looking at him if he used binoculars from across the ice, and that the natives sometime traveled across the ice and talked to the Russians, and they would sometime bring messages to each other. There was also once a polar bear that lived underneath the elementary school that needed to be driven out.

@@divyaakashdutta4038 Nor is it okay to imply that an entire people hates democracy! So many jokes about Russia and the Russians in American pop culture (and the Russians' depiction in American pop culture) rely on the assumption that all Russians love autocracy (whether the Soviet kind, or the Putinist kind, or, as weird as it sounds, both), and yet, in a country of 143 million people and a larger area than any other country in the world, some kind of criticism of the government of a given time is inevitable.
Not only is the desire of certain Russians to depose an autocratic government inevitable, but Russians actually _have_ deposed their autocratic government before, with Russians spearheading both the fall of the Russian Empire in 1917 and the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, and it may happen again soon, for since you made your comment in around December 2020, Russians have started protesting against Putin! If Russia becomes a democracy (a possibility that keeps growing as protests continue and the elections on September 19 are nearing), then every joke in the Western world that seeks to equate Russians with autocracy will, alongside every spy film, video game, political speech, and even news article that does the same, will be, much like any media that seeks to equate Germans with Nazism, completely ruined!

As for way of living, it's most likely FISHING (like I've read many native Alaskans do) and as for drinking water a mix of RAIN RUNOFF COLLECTION (when it's in liquid form) and a DESALINATION PLANT (as in taking the salt and other impurities out of ocean water and making it "kinda potable").
As for belonging the narrator said Little Diomede was part of the State of Alaska (by having USPS airmail service to the town on the island for example).

I lived in Nome so a few additional facts. There are no roads in LD but the locals do use the four wheeler to circumnavigate the island to check their traps and pick berries (it’s what I heard). And I do mean there’s just one four wheeler for the village. It was donated for use in medical emergencies so a person could be transported to the helipad but the locals don’t care. At least they didn’t vandalize it or have the mayor lock it up in his garage and refuse to let anyone use it. Those were other villages on the Seward peninsula. LD population is all native. They don’t miss any of that stuff that isn’t there. Oh that thing about the mail is baloney. Maybe envelopes are the same but boxes are way more expensive to get up to that area than in the lower 48.

Well the contract is not flown in an R-22, Evergreen Helicopters use to have it and they used a twin-engined BO-105 for it, Erickson bought out Evergreen, and as far as I know, they support the Contract with either a BO-105 or a Bell 212. Pilots wear a cold water emersion suit, If the Post Office is only paying 300000 k a year for it, they are getting off cheap. I think your numbers are off some. Also, you need a hanger for the machine in Nome, besides at least one Pilot, you are going to need at least one A+P mechanic, fuel, living quarters. Housing is in short supply in Nome, I know I use to work in the Area. It's a pretty good seat for a Helicopter Pilot if you like the outdoors and a remote place. It's a dedicated thing so the helicopter has to be in Nome 24. I keep hearing about this bridge and tunnel, besides the expense. Sort work season, if you look at Nome there are no roads going to say Fairbanks or Anchorage where there is the Road System, Environmental Impact would hold up and drive up construction costs for decades. It could be done, it would be a railroad thing, along with an oil and gas pipelines. The Idea of being able to drive from NYC to Moscow would be interesting, but the Russians do have much in the way of roads in Siberia either. It would be a 50-year project and both countries would have to commit to it for the long haul, that would mean getting along like we have not gotten alone in a very long time.

if they build that tunnel, those two islands would go from the most remote islands in the world to one of the busiest.

This is probably one of the funnier videos Wendover has ever put out. He was memeing the whole time.

Loving these transitions into sponsorships. They're actually one of the best parts of the video

The drive to my grandmothers house is 89 miles and the drive, if there ever is one, would be roughly 52 miles. That means if I fill up my tank in Russia and drive to America, I'll make it there with plenty of gas, and arrive before I even actually left. WOW.

“And for you non-Americans, that’s 4,000,000 centimeters” What a prankster.

The US was supposed to go metric in 1980. There were all kinds of commercials about how to convert imperial to metric; we had a special course on the metric system when I was in high school, but 1980 came and went, and it just didn't seem to catch on. I had a 1980 Pontiac Sunbird that had all metric bolts on it. I had to use an adjustable wrench to fix anything because there were no metric wrenches.
A lot of English speaking countries use both. We don't know how much a "stone" is, but I've heard it used in the UK and Australia.

The metric system is so much of a success than as a metric user, I immediately understood what 4 million centimeters is.

The way this channel promotes their sponsors is just too ingenious.
