    It's a hard decision you have to make on the Texas Cow. If you don't process her she's a drain on your resources. At the same time, the fact that she's fought to stay alive and managed to get up 3 times after laying down shows her determination to get well and live. A very hard call that all Ranchers have to make from time to time. I don't envy you having to make this decision. Wishing you all the best.

    I am so glad you did what was right for Dunbar. When the expert vet tells you to do something, you do it for their health. Don't let anyone on the internet affect how you care for your bison. Look at how Dunbar loves you. Wow, that is a BIG litter of puppies! I counted 10! Ranching sometimes is tough and your viewers need to know that.

    I absolutely LOVE your LOVE for your American Bison, Jackie, Pups, Cora, all the animals and especially for Marissa and Brooks! You are such an amazing man, Dusty!!! Thank you!!!🙏💙🌹 I realize that I cannot fully realize the amount of work that you do! I have raised 5 children into adulthood, but I know that animal husbandry is vastly different. Again, thank you for being such an upstanding man and rancher!!! I also have faith that your Bison Momma is worthy of keeping and that she’s able to have a healthy calf one day…she hasn’t come this far because she’s weak or finished…Miracles still do happen!!!

    I rescued a five pound dog who came to me with an eye just like Dunbar after his antibiotics. The vet said it was probably an old injury and what we could see was the scar tissue. Manny had sight in his eye , just probably not full range of vision. He was my fastest mouser. He even beat the cats and dogs who were twice his size. He just ran under them and walked away with the mouse.

    I think you should give her another chance. Nature causes calves to abort when something is wrong with them NOT necessarily the cow. I realize it was traumatic for you but you don’t know that will happen again. Think positive Dusty 👍

      @annbernadettemayer8985 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I don’t believe this was an aborted calf at that many weeks, it was a failed delivery for whatever reason. It is likely there is permanent damage. It would be wrong to put her through it again. I think you have to do what needs to be done so as not to take a total loss.

    Any chance Doc could scope your recovering cow and give a report on breedability? Understandable that the decision comes to economics as part of the equation and I have no idea what taking a chance on a new calf v producing some meat would cost. Tough decision. God speed on that one.

  • @kristaprice1954
    @kristaprice1954 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As harsh as it sounds I would process the Texas cow. Unless there's a way to get an ultrasound done to check for damage. It seems like it would be kind of cruel to try and breed her again and keep her as a pet by herself, since herd animals want to be, well, in a herd. Ranching can be a very hard business but it says a lot about you that you care so much about your animals.

  • @pugz910
    @pugz910 ปีที่แล้ว

    The eye has no nerves so there is no pain involved only time. You wave your hand and hes like well where is it? Dusty I think she will recover fully. If there was calf still in her, she is not going to be looking like this. She would have Pyometra and you would have lost her already or within 2 weeks. Damage maybe but an ultrasound would show that also. Dont underestimate the powers of mother nature's healing. I also agree you run a business, and you do have to consider that.

    I’m sure a lot of people already know this but Holy cow just by coincidence Tom Pemberton farm life just had a cow with “forest eye” looked just like Dunbar’s eye. He put the antibiotic paste in the cow’s eye. Very interesting, it must be more common than you would think.

  • @louisefulton2267
    @louisefulton2267 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Texas cow could be put down because as hard as she has fought, she is missing her herd interaction. She may die on her own, but you have done everything to keep her alive, but that may not be what is best. I think Marissa is a good sounding board for you, she has a good heart and a logical mind. Wishing you all the best.

    Portable ultrasound? We use it… depending on the worth in dollars (no heart strings attached) of the animal.
    I’m going to give the answer the internet doesn’t like.
    You run a working ranch not a sanctuary. Donate the animal to one. Or, well u know ur options.
    If you lose money on clear choices u guys will negatively impact ur ranch and family. She is the first with this problem..

    And I 100% agree on the decision to use antibiotics on Dunbar. animals will sometimes need support. And “no antibiotics”refers to the animals who are being processed for their meat.
    The antibiotics were administered for Dunbar’s well-being and in turn the breed herds overall wellness.
    The right choice was made. Especially since you can already see improvement.

    On a serious note, though it does eat into the ranch budget, I vote for giving her a year off of breeding and then let her breed again and see what happens. Chances of her healing enough to do this are unknown, but the potential of her giving her you years of red dogs is valuable. It really is a miracle that she still alive and looking so good.

    Dunbar is one tough customer! He'll be fine, Dusty. If his eye doesn't fully heal, he will compensate in other ways. Animals are resilient, they adapt well. King Dunbar will do what a bison does. As long as he has ladies and cubes, he will be okay. Hope all goes well for him.

    I believe you will find water at 50 ft near the hand dug well when I dowsed it. Also, the Texas “miracle mom” cow who came to you for help is looking good, a testimony to her will and your good care, I think she’s even more of a miracle than we know! Give Mira a chance!

    Hi Dusty, first of all, I hope you feel better. I can detect a virus in your voice. Take care of yourself too.
    Dunbar doesn’t seem bothered by his vision, hope it clears up but could be scarring too. You take very good care of your herds and there will be occasional down days. Thanks for sharing.

    Our old hand dug well was appox 25 ft, had been producing well for years and years. NEVER went dry when others did. A few years back during a drought, it collapsed in. Had someone come out and witch and found water 15 ft or so from old original well. We had it drilled and use same well house and old pressure tank.

    It's been quite the year for you for sure! Glad Dunbar is healing and the Texas cow continues to improve! You'll make the best decision for your ranch with her. The puppies are cute! I'm not surprised that the well is going dry with the drought conditions you've been operating under for the last few years! It seems that you're in good company, unfortunately. I hope things will work out and that you get the rain you need!

    Those puppies are adorable! So glad Dunbar's eye is looking better! I know a water witcher is more expensive, but it may be cheaper in the long run. I know it is a hard decision you have to make on the Texas bison. It is such a large animal, not like a puppy or kitten. It requires so much feed & water

    Gotta use the anti-biotics where you NEED them. Dunbar's recovery to important to the herd as well as to your family and attachment to him. It's the right thing to do. So glad to see the TX cow is still on the mend and improving. I'd say transitioning her to meat production is a good plan.
    If you get a really good well drilled, might you be able to haul to the Ponderosa as needed too? That's good news that the equipment for the old well is not a total loss.
    Puppies is kewl! Jackie needs another female to hang with since Maya's not there all the time. Big litter there. Shows how well the dogs are cared for and have some solid genetics too.
