    Aaron, morality is an EVOLUTIONARY process. Our species learned very early on that, as tribes, we needed to take care of our group. It was the only way to propagate the species. Murder, rape, theft would degrade the viability of the group. Our well being among others in our society is based on Evolution. It's not "biblical" or any other religious development.

      @Yokai369 Some of your statements border on the ridiculous. "Murder eliminates weaker members"?? Tell that to Mrs Lincoln. My point was not one of logic, only the scientific view that human empathy towards other humans is rooted in evolution, not theism. Of course there are examples of outliers, but that does not refute the biological mechanisms that propagate the species. ANY SPECIES. We have morality because we are genetically evolved to have empathy towards others of our species. At least the majority population does.. The actions of protecting the tribe or family unit can be observed in multiple species, not just humans. This predisposition to protect each other is millions of years old, not something that just came about in the last 2000 years. You are mixing up theology with evolutionary biology.

      "morality is an EVOLUTIONARY process"
      Scientists have found that even some social species of animals have a sense of morality. There was a story I read of a wolf tribe that either kicked out or killed a female member who was acting in an antisocial manner (she may have killed some cubs, or something along those lines). I don't remember the specifics. But "morality" would be incredibly useful to the survival of any social group. So, those members who are naturally more "understanding" of the needs of others would really add to the chance that the group lives on.

    • @az8theist977
      @az8theist977 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SamIAm-kz4hg I think you agree with my point. "Morality", in human terms, is most often associated with religion and god. The apologists say you cannot have morality without god. I say nonsense. As you pointed out, some species of social animals perform societal functions with inbred empathy. They didn't get it from reading a holy book. My whole point in refuting the other poster regarding murder, theft, rape, etc., was that empathy towards others for the preservation of the "tribe" or group is a result of BIOLOGICAL EVOLUTION, not the scribbling of ancient goat herders who didn't know what lightning was.....

      I'd prefer the term "purposed." A rock on its own has no purpose. It just sits there. Using it for practical application is creating a purpose for it. Adaptation is when something has a function already but its use is refined for a more precise or entirely new purpose. For example, a squirrel has a function of surviving in a forest but through adaptation it may survive very well in a specific forest region or in an entirely new environment like a grassland.

    • @UngoogleableMan
      @UngoogleableMan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MunkyDrag0n the way I understand it, a rock is not a hammer. One could design and make a hammer with a rock, by tying it to a stick for example with vine or rope or whatever, or chisel it in to a specific shape. But the "hammer" is the specific intended implementation of creating a tool. The "hammer" is designed, not the things it's made of. If you break the rock from the stick, it's no longer a hammer and no more "designed".

What point is giving guidelines to life if the reasons for their being there in the first place aren't explained? It's like telling a child off for breaking a rule and you answer because I said so, does the child learn anything? No.

    This is a serious message to Gene from Pa. I teach biology, chemistry, and computer science at a college in Md (I used to be from Pa too...but wandered south a bit). I have had students ask me similar questions in the past (almost always put up to it by their preacher or b/c they watch AIG or Ray Comfort, etc, and often attempting to be disruptive). Here is how I've handled the two most common of these:
    Q1) Where you there?
    R1) Take a moment to think about how the world would work if this was a legitimate argument. We would not be able to teach that George Washington was our first president because none of us were there to see it. Similarly, we would not be able to accept that slavery ever existed and thus wouldn't be able to learn from our past mistakes. We would have to release every criminal ever convicted because not only were we not there, but neither was the judge or any member of the jury.
    Q2) Doesn't the 2nd law of thermodynamics disproves evolution (or rarely big bang)?
    R2) Could you explain how? And at this point, about 3/4 of them admit they have no idea why it would but someone with influence on them put them up to it. Most of the rest say something like, "Because it says everything in the universe is decaying in disorder, but evolution says complex life comes from simpler life." And then I explain that scientific laws are descriptive and since so many observations contradict that incorrect definition of the 2nd law that if it actually said that, it would never have become a law in the first place because in addition to disproving evolution it would also 'disprove' trees, snowflakes and even make blinking your eyes impossible. Most give up here, but a few ask for examples or for what I meant by the last statement:
    Ex 1: A tree or bush is more complex than the seed that produced it and the seed itself is more complex than the gametes that produced it.
    Ex 2: A snowflake is more complex than the water molecules that produced it.
    Ex 3: The ATP that lets you blink your eyes is more complex than the adenine, the ribose, and the phosphates that your body used to make it.
    I then give the class an extra credit opportunity where they can research the 2nd law and how things that seem to violate it really work/are able to 'violate' it without actually violating it.

    In one case, I DESIGNED something, in the other I just used an undesigned thing for a PURPOSE it was not designed for.
    Likewise I KNOW car rims are DESIGNED to hold tires and thus allow a car to function. Alternately I can USE that rim for the PURPOSE of a planter or Firepit, a PURPOSE it was definitively NOT DESIGNED for.

    Aaron REALLY misses the point when he says that there are a lot of things in the Bible that you would agree are moral. Matt already made the point twice. This is a clear example of you ALREADY having a set of morals, and then coming to the Bible and seeing what you happen to agree with. You don't actually need to read the Bible since you've already got morality.

Let's say he hammers the nail and, having finished with the rock, he tosses it aside. What he tossed aside was not a hammer, it was a non-designed rock. If I then picked up that same rock and used it to beat some sense into Adrian's head, it would still be a rock...maybe put to a better use.

      Yeah that's excellent news to me as well, I also don't like Don Baker, he's way too mediocre to be a co-host, he can barely defend a position because his arguments aren't that good and he can't even finish his own arguments either because he stops in the middle to cackle and leave the argument unfinished, the other host (usually Matt) is the one that needs to pick it up where he left it and finish it.
      I also find Don's cackle to be cringie, disrespectful and makes the show look unprofessional, Don barely adds anything to the show, the only thing he does here is cackle.

    The first caller: I usually hear theists use circular argument to (fallaciously) prove their point. This guy uses circular argument to disprove his own point.

    • @XaTrIxX2
      @XaTrIxX2 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, a circular argument can neither be a proof or a disproof for anything, as it's fallacious and has to be disregarded anyways.

    • @XaTrIxX2
      @XaTrIxX2 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Bad oMaN Really? Let's say I have a book that says on page 1: This book has a page 2. Then you check and there is a page 2 that says: Here is page 2. It is here because page 1 said so. Proof done.
      This is a circular argument, but page 2 still exists. So you have a circular argument, but that didn't prove anything. A circular argument can not be used to conclude anything. It can neither prove or disprove.
      You are saying that it's a circular argument and that proves it false. Well: there was still a page 2.

    • @XaTrIxX2
      @XaTrIxX2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Bad oMaN no, a circular argument is pretty simple. if a then b, if b then a. bible is word of god, therefore god exists. god exists, therefore bible is word of god.
      I might note that this circular example also neither disproves god or disproves that the bible is the word of god. All it does is: okay this is a circular reasoning, we have to dismiss this argument.

    • @XaTrIxX2
      @XaTrIxX2 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Bad oMaN wrong. The example argument I presented is circular, whether you begin with the assumption that it's already true or not. The argument is circular in structure, that is what makes it fallacious. if a then b, if b then a. That structure is fallacious no matter if you take a (or b) as already true or not.

    • @XaTrIxX2
      @XaTrIxX2 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Bad oMaN That's the thing. I can tell you that page 2 exists because page 1 says so and vice versa, but before I give you the book, you won't know. All you can say is I don't follow that logic. However, to conclude that therefore page 2 and page 1 don't exist because the argument is circular is wrong. I might then give you a book and it has no page 1 or 2. Or it has. So you proved my point. A circular argument does neither prove or disprove anything. And it can never because it is fallacious. To conclude ANYTHING from a fallacious argument is by definition fallacious. Again, a circular argument disproves nothing. Actual evidence proves or disproves a thing.

    Morality- theist vs atheist. When I was a theist, i was trying to be a good person. Now I'm an atheist and I'm BETTER person. One thing changed. Before, I wasn't sure about same-sex marriage: church teaches it's a sin. Now I KNOW that same-sex marriage it's OK. It's OK to be gay... It's OK to do things in your own way. Your life your way. My life my way.

    • @RecTec77
      @RecTec77 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      On the first look, i agree that you can't make it and then design it. Though i do not agree that design must be first. It happens a lot, that making and designing happen simultanously. Art would be a perfect example for that. But still, once the thing is finished, the designing part must be finished as well. Until someone decides to change the design. You see the problem here? I find the idea of making a difference between design and purpose to be the better approach. It highlights the fact, that for instance in the stone/hammer example, the stone already existed and was not altered in any way. It is quite hard to witness people not even understanding such basic thing as the definition of design.
