ArteAlen Yeah, fun action, but not great. They wasted a chance to make something really cool. My bets are all with Batman vs Superman, which seems far more interesting.
People are confusing a simple narrative with a lack of one. Fury Road operates on a very primal, visceral level - forgoing exposition and over-explanation for contextual, visual development and rich imagery. I can completely understand why someone would hate it but I personally found it to be incredibly powerful, boasting some of the best cinematography I have literally ever seen. It is beautifully put together.
+Chris00Stans No, he said it uses primarily visuals to develop its characters and deliver emotional impact, which is still storytelling. A complicated plot is not necessary to tell a good story; well rounded characters with development are.
Some reviewer called it the loudest silent movie of all time. And the first two times I watched it, I probably couldn't understand what was being said in half of the lines and it really doesn't matter at all.
The idea was to make a movie that could be understood by people from many different countries. Hence, the simple and easy-to-understand plot, minimal dialogue, and awesome action scenes.
+Lasse Sørnes What are you talking about? The honest trailer touched on how insanely boring the movie was without anything to hold your interest other than dose awsum explusins & dos sexxxy whorez. It is a mind numbing insult of a film. An obvious money grab.
I kinda feel sorry for all the artists who worked on the over 1000 VFX shots in this movie which pretty much no one noticed and are then told that their craft is completely inferior to practical stuff.
+Rowan J Coleman The fact that most people didn't notice is the biggest compliment the VFX people can get. The combination of practical effects with post processing is much more effective than straight VFX. This movie did a great job of using both.
+Casey Franek Speaking as a student of CGI, I can only hope that one day I manage to become good enough for people to say they didn't notice what I did.
I loved how sympathetic this film was towards its mooks. There's a tendency to make mooks faceless and boring to rationalize how often they die (Avatar, Kick Ass, Kill Bill) but this one made them interesting bordering on sympathetic - and unexpectedly elevated one of them to a supporting character by the end - but was still willing to kill scores of them.
By looking at the comments, I can't believe how many people dislike this film. I understand that all film is subjective but there are some opinions that are really pushing it. Seriously, go back to watching Transformers or something.
+Miroslav Gnjatovic More important than the dislike is the given reasons. If the people expressing dislike could give a credible reasons, I would leave it at that and keep watching. But some of the reasons given just make me want to drive a truck over people. One person I normally respect called the film misogynist, which is really curious given that the film is a "if past is prologue" dirty look at how women as well as disabled and poor people are treated today. Some of the comments here, particularly the ones claiming that Max is not really in the film, just make me want to drop nukes on people. Yeah, so Max is not jumping up and down in front of the camera yelling "look at me! I am Max!" throughout the entire runtime. That is how ensembles where the interactions between characters drives the story work. RoboCop was not in a hundred percent of the real RoboCop film, either, and spoke less words in 100 minutes than each of the other characters do in 10. People are morons, basically.
+Miroslav Gnjatovic Though i agree as an action movie its a 10/10 . I believe as a whole it lacks a lot . So yeah genius maybe ill get back to watching crappy films like fuckin Kubrick's ,Scorsese's or some other's mastermind , because Mad Max was no way near those ... It lacked of Storyline , Acting * besides Nicholas Hoult, Character Depth and fuckin emotion ... Now suck it up your mouth with your overrated movie ..
+la antarctica *pat* There, there. I am so sorry that Fury Road’s visual gags about disability rights, social welfare, and the role scarcity plays in power structures went over your head. Go back to praising what you are told to.
+aspie182 I guess you see more than George Miller saw in his own movie while he was making it . Although to your defense i agree with your 3rd argument which is pretty legit ..Not sure if it makes up for a kinda lacking storyline in my opinion. Anyway in your comment it seems to me that you disagree only with the storyline factor.. So i assume you agree with me on the factors of : 1.Acting performances 2.Character depth 3. Emotion Buildup ? And please stop believing MadMax was a masterpiece. Comparing it to other action movies , yes i agree it was simply 10/10 , but generally as a movie it was like a bit over 3/4 for me which is just good ..
+Borat69able Yeah, but the things they pointed out were incredibly forgivable. Usually they completely brutalize movies, even ones that are universally loved.
Why are people so pissed they dont have a clear cut protagonist in this? in find it refreshing theres two main characters and not a clear focus on just one of them. we need a lot of experimentation in cinema...also with mythological aspects otherwise well just have the savior , jesus, neo tale written all over again
Walter Kovacs Ron and Hermione are only considered protagonists by those who don't know what protagonists are. They're supporting characters. Having an arc and being important doesn't make you a protagonist. They're better called deuteragonists if anything. If they had actually equal importance (note: they do not) to Harry then it could be considered a 3-protagonist story, but its not. They support Harry, and while being very important to his success, they are not the primary actors facing the primary antagonist.
"From the director of Happy feet an Babe, pig in the city" "wait..what?" Lol that's pretty much what I was thinking. That sequel to babe was pretty hard-core though 😆😆😆
+Android 19 I loved the movie but I wish Max effected the plot more. In the Road Warrior, Lord Humungus would have never been defeated and the camp wouldn't have survived without Max. In Fury Road, if you took Max out of it, most of the movie would have been exactly the same. When it came to accomplishing goals and feats, Furiosa did 90% of that. I'm not saying he was useless but I do wish he had more effect on the story.
Max is not the plot, he is the lens through which the audience views the plot. This was a pretty common storytelling device in the 70s and 80s. Lots of long-winded older anime in particular used this formula. Glad to see it back, personally.
Mad Max Fury Road is truely an absolute fucking masterpiece of hand-crafted action. You can take all your Marvel-CGI-Massacres, if we get another Movie like Mad Max!
Matthew Murdock Ok, I give you that. Winter Soldier was outstanding. (I'm not just hating the Marvel Movies, most of them are quite enjoyable or even really good. Just complaining about the amount of CGI)
+Matthew Murdock Technology in film is not advancing, is regressing, which is why they're producing worst cameras than they used to in the 80s, 60s, 70s and 50s. And i'm not just talking about awful digital cameras(that's not cinema, it's videomaking), i'm talking about film cameras too. Post-production is not filmmaking.
Post Production is not filmmaking?.....Post Production is film making its where 70 percent of the entire film goes, regardless of whether a film uses CGI, Practical effects, is shot in digital, shot on film..doesn't matter....post production is where all the editing takes place which is most certainly filmmaking.....without editing films would be released jumbled messes....post production is one of the most important parts of film making. 95 percent of films in the past century go through some kind of post production....you can thank D.W. Griffith for that. cause before that people just kind of developed film and released it, maybe doing things here and there....it wasn't that exciting.
Why is everyone so butthurt about being movie's focus. I think it was well done and fitting for the charater. In fury road you are Max . You are just witnessing the events happen.
Probably because the movie is called "Mad Max", not "Furiosa". Max was not the best fighter, marksman, or driver. He didn't have the best lines. For anyone who isn't familiar with the series, the movie does a terrible job explaining his backstory. If you were to cut out the first few minutes involving him (which could have easily been done if this story revolved around Furiosa instead), he would probably have less airtime than Nux.
because Max backstory was explained in pervious movies. Unlike usual reset of Batman/Spiderman/Superman movie where we always have hero origin story movie focused on own story. Not need to plave hero origin in every movie at all. Movie is doing great job telling story with Max in background. And if someone will want to learn backstory of character will simply see pervious three movies. We don't need see origin story if every single movie in series. That allows to focus on story told from begining to end without unnecessary distractions. And in begining of movie there is enough viewer need to know who Max is. but that is only my opinion heh~ cheers and have nice day
It is a joke here...but people love to whinne about popular subjects to sound interesting...So although the director is doing exactly what you say, retards will whinne.
I feel like most of the people complaining about Max's lack of screentime haven't watched the previous films or haven't seen them in some time. Sure, he was (mostly) the main focus in the original film, but in both "Mad Max 2: Road Warrior" and "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome", he was more of an audience surrogate and supporting player. The sequels have always been more about the "universe" and stories taking place within it than the character of Max. All three follow-ups basically use Max to usher the audience into the new story and characters, and then gradually shift focus from him. And this follows that pretty much perfectly.
It actually really annoys me when people try and downplay Tom Hardy's role in this film. I'll admit Charlize Theron was amazing as Furiosa, but credit where credit is due. Criticism for lack of dialogue on Max's part? I call that damn good acting when he can portray such a character with so few words.
+SlipperyEel Because he didn't need to talk.Movie started with Max and ended with Max.He was the driver and giving orders, making deals.Fury Road barely have Max in it.He was missing in half of the movie. Why did they even call the movie Mad Max.They could have call it Mad Nux which would make more sense than this.
Orhan çelik Fury Road started with Max, and ended with Max as well, he was present and a essential force throughout the entire movie. Because he was bound during the first portion of the film you believe him missing from an entire half? The next installment in the franchise will not feature Furiosa or Nux as it is not her series. You see the two parties parting ways, which do you think has the more compelling future? Furiosa who has reached her goal? Or Max? The ever wanderer?
TheMadThresher Dont play the dumb, you know what i mean by ''It started with Max''.Furry road may have started with Max.Only to put a gag on him and chain him for at least half of the movie. When he can talk,he didnt even talked. He just mumbled and growled. There was no Max in the movie. There was more Nux than Max in THAT movie.Emphasise on ''that movie''.I dont care about the future films. This movie wont have any effect on the next movie if there wont be any furiosa. So this is a seperate movie than future ones.
Really? Who called for such a comparison. FF are generic, idiotic action flicks. While Mad Max Fury Road is a all around Masterpiece and definitely one of the best movies of the last year.
Plz say: "Hello commander. It is good, to see you again. We need you to take charge of resistance operations throughout the world. Establish contact with the local cells and bring them into the Fold. SAVE OUR WORLD. Time is short commander, good luck."
They waste fuel and water because Immortan Joe is trying to keep up the illusion that he's a god by showing people that the things important to everyone else mean nothing to him. It's kind of like how countries like North Korea waste money building theme parks when there are millions of people starving. Also, the film is short on dialogue and exposition but there's plenty of story. It's like a dance performance or a shadow play. They may not tell you anything through words but so much is conveyed through the action and imagery. The film is like a ballet of chaos and destruction.
It does say something that Joe has so much of these precious resources that he can afford to waste. It helps to have all the water for yourself, and a literal Gas Town and Bullet Farm.
*My Rebuttal to "Mad Max sucked" comments:* 1. If you are just a hipster that doesn't like something for sheer spite...please go study for your freshman midterm. 2. If you harp on the lack of dialogue or plot without doing a shred of research into the making of this movie or the thought process behind it then please do said research. George Miller intended to, from the beginning, make a action movie in it's purest form, striped of the gaudy dialogue, romance, and humor that had become endemic to the genre. 3. If you are a "true" Mad Max fan who only watches the first two movies out of some misguided hipster dogma, please refer to point 1. 4. If you are upset about the lack of continuity in the Max canon please refer to point 2.
+Midironica As someone who liked this movie, but not to the same extenct to which you idiotic fans keep trying to sell it: 1. Several professional critics disliked the movie; they certainly ain't freshmen. 2. Any artistic work (which movies *are*) must stand alone without any research. That you think it needs research is a point *against* the movie. Not to mention that creator's intent is also irrelevant when interpreting a work. So congratulations on highlighting flaws of the movie while trying to defend it. 3. Refer to point One. 4. Refer to point Two.
Andres Iniesta Not that my opinion would erase the fact that Death of the Author is a thing and that several critics disliked this movie which means that my points would stand regardless... But my favorite action movies are Terminator 2, Die Hard and Aliens, so shut up, moron.
+Midironica 5. this movie tells it's story visually, not through dialogue. And it still has a lot of compelling scenes, strong themes and clever moments that elevate the story beyond most other films
It's funny how nobody seems to get what the mad max character is all about. First of all we already know everything about him from the other films, and just like in the other films, he shows up and saves the day, and then leaves at the end. That's the character. It's what he does. Just because there's another character who has alot of screen time and partipates in saving the day doesn't make Max any less of the lead.
basquat76 Especially when you consider the fact that with out him Fury and those wives would most likely be dead if it wasn't for Max, I guess we can see him as the guardian for the group.
+basquat76 exactly, all Mad Max movies portray Max as an antihero who has no purpose but to help get himself and others out of bad situations. By the end of the movie he's supposed to be seen as a legend, someone who no one knows much about but who was important to the resolution of things and Fury Road did that perfectly.
basquat76 "Lead" or not, his character was very poorly written. Grunting and pointing at things is the extent of Max's dialog. He may be the titular character, but he was overshadowed by vastly superior characters, such as Furiosa, Immortan Joe and Nux. Prequels don't justify any character's lack of impact in any movie, let alone when they're 30 years old. Don't get me wrong; I LOVED Mad Max Fury Road, but Max's poor script was the lowest point of the movie by far.

Screen Junkies Am i the only one that thought this movie was a bit overrated The movie was good but not as great as everyone say. I mean that's just my opinion.
-Max drove the heavy rig in the gasoline canyon. -Max fixed the heavy rig when Nux was on board. -Max fixed it again gets caught in deep mud. -Max wanders into the dark to confront the Bullet Farmer, killing him and safely returning to the Rig with guns and ammunition. -Max convinced Furiosa to return to The Citadel. -Max fights Joe's eldest son, Rictus Erectus. -Max saves Furiosa's life by giving his blood ! -Other than his role in all the battles... What a lazy guy Max is... (Sorry but your point is invalid, Screenjunkies !)

It's even rarer that the main female lead gets to fight a male villain, usually they just end up fighting the female baddy.
I thought Hardy had potential but we never really got time to get attached to the character. I wish they'd focused on him more
Not to mention the fact that Max comes up with the idea for them to turn around and thus prevent all the women travelling to their deaths...
Those are some of the reasons I loved this movie, it avoided many clichees like the forced romance between furiosa and max, furiosa held her own against the bad guys.

Lasse Sørnes Yeah I noticed Honest Trailers really struggling to make jokes out of Fury Road.
You can't make a joke out of Fury Road. It's impossible:)
I honestly didn't expect much from it, but it was really a great flick.
+Lasse Sørnes What are you talking about? The honest trailer touched on how insanely boring the movie was without anything to hold your interest other than dose awsum explusins & dos sexxxy whorez. It is a mind numbing insult of a film. An obvious money grab.
eɔuarongI yW ǝƃılbO You are out of your fucking mind.
"Tom...Hardly in this film!" I lost it! Lol!
We noticed.
+Rowan J Coleman if i was a CGI artist it would be a compliment to be told that my work looks like practical effects honestly
UndergroundTrev Except it already does in many instances.
"YOU WILL NEVER BE THIS METAL"
so true! X'D
I tried to be that metal, does that count?
+la antarctica Assumption is the mother of all fukk-ups.
Haha. I love how they couldn't think of a single bad thing to say about this movie.
+Narthumpulous Did you watch the video? They did...
+Borat69able yea, extreme nitpicking that can be torn apart....they even said it was better tan age of ultron...the fanboys wet dream
+Greg Barnett Word. This movie was practically flawless.
+Borat69able Yeah, but the things they pointed out were incredibly forgivable. Usually they completely brutalize movies, even ones that are universally loved.
Narthumpulous I really wouldn't call 'poor story' forgivable in a movie but Mad Max did make up for it in its practical effects and cinematography.
This video made me realize how simplistic the movie is but also how much of a masterpiece it is

Why are people so pissed they dont have a clear cut protagonist in this? in find it refreshing theres two main characters and not a clear focus on just one of them.
we need a lot of experimentation in cinema...also with mythological aspects otherwise well just have the savior , jesus, neo tale written all over again
Because it's called Mad Max
+TheWimmse Commander Shepard Christ
+DavidS Videos Harry Potter is called Harry Potter, but it has three protagonists that all have their own arc. Fury Road is the same.
Walter Kovacs Good example but it's still much more about Harry.
"From the director of Happy feet an Babe, pig in the city" "wait..what?"
Lol that's pretty much what I was thinking. That sequel to babe was pretty hard-core though 😆😆😆
Those who complain that Max is just "there", probably have never seen a Mad Max movie before.
+Akron162 Right? This movie is honestly just a modern version of Road Warrior, and most people hold that as by far the best of the original three.
+Android 19 "The best of the original three"... so we all agree to forget about Thunderdome?
+Android 19 I loved the movie but I wish Max effected the plot more. In the Road Warrior, Lord Humungus would have never been defeated and the camp wouldn't have survived without Max. In Fury Road, if you took Max out of it, most of the movie would have been exactly the same. When it came to accomplishing goals and feats, Furiosa did 90% of that. I'm not saying he was useless but I do wish he had more effect on the story.
+Akron162 So what ? Mad Max is decades old and ppl have moved on.
+Akron162 Well he was more involved in the first one but then it was basically his origin story.
Max is not the plot, he is the lens through which the audience views the plot. This was a pretty common storytelling device in the 70s and 80s. Lots of long-winded older anime in particular used this formula. Glad to see it back, personally.
Nausicaa
Mad Max Fury Road is truely an absolute fucking masterpiece of hand-crafted action. You can take all your Marvel-CGI-Massacres, if we get another Movie like Mad Max!
Matthew Murdock Ok, I give you that. Winter Soldier was outstanding. (I'm not just hating the Marvel Movies, most of them are quite enjoyable or even really good. Just complaining about the amount of CGI)
+Matthew Murdock I think he's referring to the CGI slaughter of thousands of CGI robots in Age of Ultron
So no mention of Jurassic world?
"retards"??? what a wonderful personality you must have....
+TheMadThresher so true
+TheMadThresher It's like they've never seen Mad Max 2. Gibson has only like 14 lines of dialogue (or something around that number) in that movie.
The Role Mel Gibson got too mad to play LMAO
+Graham Quigley damn, you beat me to it!
Mad Max series > all those silly fast and furious films

+Kysman95 It feels like you're trying to make him do free voice-over work for your indie game or movie.
NightWatch707 :D No, it's his own line from XCom 2
+NightWatch707 You really dont have any clue bro. Its him from XCOM...
***** Yeah I got it the first time he said it.
+Kysman95 This needs to happen.
The film is like a ballet of chaos and destruction.
very well said and I agree!
It does say something that Joe has so much of these precious resources that he can afford to waste. It helps to have all the water for yourself, and a literal Gas Town and Bullet Farm.
Roman Torchwick kinda do. there is this gang running around called "The Cops"
+ipu5hbutt0ns You're out of your fucking mind if you believe that.

Let's be honest, Mad Max: Fury Road was just the daily commute to work and back. ;)
An explosion filled commute with enough testosterone to give a woman a hipster beard and testicles.
Well it is Australian...
Mad Max should be nominated for an Oscar. Who agrees?
ClemMedia me
It probably will be frankly.
Unless of course some other movies pulls a last second Birdman AGAIN.
It should be nominated for all the oscars! Even best animated, because why the fuck not?
+ClemMedia It should be nominated for best picture honestly.
*My Rebuttal to "Mad Max sucked" comments:*
+Midironica finally
+Midironica As someone who liked this movie, but not to the same extenct to which you idiotic fans keep trying to sell it:
4. Refer to point Two.
phylosacc tell me your favorite action movies, if you say avengers or some shit like that then your argument is invalid.
The first one he was the lead, the only guy who got close to the screen time who wasn't a villain was goose
The main character of the first Mad Max was Goose and he was more mad then Max. In fact, it should have been called Mad Goose XD
That guy with the guitar though xD Shredding for 2 days!
best honest trailer!
and i love Tom's grunting! i think he should have won the oscar for supporting boar.

This film actually has a lot of cgi. It's the blend of practical and cgi that makes the films effects spectacular
Not really. Ive watched a video on how they made this movie and it only has a very few cgi like the sand storm
@@boxtrolls6144 I'm guessing they took the "everything that can be practical is practical" approach buuut Max Mad's stuff is slightly less feasible than most movies that do that (secretly though, almost all modern films secretly mix in some CGI, even if there's no action)
Still better than Avatar.
