I took mine to the range today for the first time. Made the place go silent. Mine was manufactured in Dec of 1942.

Took mine to the range for the first time last weekend. Mine was manufactured in Oct of 1942. Matching serial numbers for the most part. Very accurate. I was hitting a 12" gong at 200 yards. Not bad for a guy over 60. Kicks like a mule though. Had a sore shoulder after 8 en bloc clips and hearing the distinctive "ping". What a great gun.

I m from the philippines, probably those garands we used during our campaign against the reds in the time of the martial law and the seccestionist groups of muslim in mindanao. Soldiers preferred garand rather than m-16 because the 30-06 does not veer when it hit grass or twigs and rebels were afraid of it considering they know its more powerful and body stopper. I love it when I fired it I feel like it makes me invincible and confident.

Did my jungle warfare training on Mindanao! Same time the Moros were in the same area, attacking local forces. Agree with you, most american military preferred the M-14 for the same reason-M-16s were worthless in a heavy jungle/wooded environment. Still are. Anyway, just wanted to say Hi, cannot imagine why anyone would leave the Philippines tho! Beautiful country and nicest people ever! Also helped build school in Dumaguete a very long time ago. Beautiful country!!!!!!

I am a Garand owner and a employee now!!! My job includes classifying slings and bayonets coming back from the Philippine Islands! The sweat , blood and dirt on theses slings is sacred and we do not remove any of it! Over 80,000 Americans will now have Philippine DNA in their homes and gun safes!

@@luckybait I certainly wish that non US citizen will have a chance to own one of this M1 Garand via CMP. It might be a dream but just saying. It's a part of our history too as Filipinos! My first and last introduction to this M1 Garand was during our college ROTC firing sessions back in 1982 or 83.

Your rifle"s receiver is indeed 1944 manufacture. Your op-rod is a national match manufacture, which has tighter tolerances for competition shooting. The trigger guard, rear sight are post war.The gas cylinder lock is also post war, it is called the improved humpback type. It is most probably a rebuilt WW2 rifle, which was re-barreled, by the date on the barrel, seen under the op rod, which is a springfield barrel manufactured April 1954, and was probably rebuilt towards the end of 1954. This means that it is most likely a Philippine return. Quite a few were returned without stocks. An original stock would have a 1/2 inch eagle cartouche where it says cmp, and a "P" inside a circle for proofed rifle near the trigger guard, on the wrist portion of the stock. Overall, you have a very nice M1 Remember to use 30-06 ammunition specifically made for he M! so as not to damage the op-rod. Modern hunting loads produce way to much pressure. Enjoy!!

I had never held a Garand before I bought a bring-back from Korea 5 decades ago. All matching HRA with NO visible riflings. It still shot better than my deer rifle and I was hooked. I got 2 green cans full of AP and a manual. A medically retired Marine talked me into sending it to Glen Nelson to "National Match" it. I lost all the HRA parts replaced by NM parts, but it was both beautiful and a gorgeous blond Walnut 308. I later replaced the barrel with a new-ish LMR after I found out that it stove-piped in the rain with the heavy Douglas 308 barrel. The CMP was then the DCM and worked mostly with high power competitors. You could send them a worn out M1 and they would rebuild it and send you a replacement Garand. A lot of them were N.I.B. back then. I'm 71 now and am down to about 62 Garands accumulated over the years; some from DCM & CMP, but most from gun shows and blind luck. Have 30ish years in my pre-40 project, but I will probably precede it in death before I find those last 4-5 parts. I STILL shoot them when people throw off on them or brag too much about black rifles....Good income for betting people.............Doc

62?! Want to sell one? Disappointed I waited so long, because now the only option from CMP is currently re-stocked, re-barreled, and re-everythinged except the receiver which might also be post-war. I'm buying not as an investment, but seeking connection to my now deceased grandfather and great uncles who used the same weapon during world War II. Maybe I missed the boat, but hoping I can buy from someone like you that bought a few when the prices were more reasonable.

Absolutely my favorite shooting firearm. You can get a new hollowed out gas plug from Garand Gear. I have not installed mine but just keep it handy for a Garand ammo shortage. 40 years ago my older brother demonstrated to me how not to get Garand Thumb. He was so nice that his demonstration was complete as the bolt smashed his thumb. What are older brothers for anyway? Now that we are both in our 70's he still has the scar and funny thumb nail.....enjoy your piece of history.

Congratulations. Looks to be “CMP” (Boyd) wood. Nothing wrong with that... I’ve replaced the junk original stocks with CMP wood on a number of my M1’s. A few years ago, CMP had warehouses full of M1 parts... complete trigger groups... oprods... barrels, etc.. most is gone now, but you can still get a lot of small parts from CMP and other vendors. Of all the CMP M1’s I have, only two needed rebarreling. I put a new Danish VAR barrel on one and had CMP put a Kreiger on the other. I do an annual field strip, clean and re-lube every September. I clean with Hoppe’s, then spray with Hornady One Shot, followed by greasing appropriately with TETRA gun grease and a bit of TETRA gun oil where indicated. I highly recommend Kuhnhausen’s “The U.S. .30 Caliber Gas Operated Service Rifles: A Shop Manual, Volumes I & II”.
My two best M1’s are built around unissued H&R barreled receivers. Some collectors consider H&R M1 rifles to be among the best regarding fit, finish and overall craftsmanship. Production of the H&R M1 rifles ceased in May 1956, by which time 428,600 rifles had been delivered. It is doubtful if any of the H&R M1 rifles made it overseas prior to the cessation of active combat operations of the Korean War in 1953. By the time H&R was able to get into mass production, the pressing need for new M1s had passed, and the majority of the rifles remained stateside or were used to fulfill various military foreign-aid commitments.

The easiest way to purchase an M1 Garand from CMP is to join the Garand Collectors Association, GCA for short.
Cost is 25.00 and they will ask you if you want the CMP to be informed of your membership.
After that you can purchase one when you send in the required paperwork. You can download paperwork and print it off from CMP. The CMP has the information on how to fill it out on their site.

The rifle itself is not dated. You have to look at the serial number and compare it to the on line run of serial numbers from the Springfield armory to be able to date it. Stamped trigger guard means post war and each parts group's numbers do have meaning. You'll have to research each part to find out what era they were made. Barrel was made in 1954.

Two comments. On the oprod...NM is not national Match. Its New Manufacture. The original oprods had square corners in the dogleg. They were prone to bending or breaking. A new design was made with radiuses in the corners of the dog leg. They were marked NM to save time in the arsenal refurbishments.
The numbers on the parts are not S/N related. Because the guns were made by a dozen contractors and parts were made by 50 more, each part had a drawing number on it. That number related back to the original and later modified specification sheet for that part.
That rear sight is stock and correct for that receiver.

Usually to see if all the parts are original it would have to have all the same manufacture parts. You look the numbers up like on the bolt to see when it was made and if it matches the date of the receiver than those parts are original. Then you do that to the rest of the parts.

This was a post WWII rebuild. The barrel is dated 4-54 and was made by Springfield. I would bet your rifle was rebuilt in the late 1954 or later. The number on your bolt is the drawing number. The sights are Korean War era. WWII sights would have a lock bar on them. Every part has a drawing number and it follows the format of the one on the bolt. There are on the left side of the receiver below the wood line, the heat lot numbers. Scott Duff puts out a book that can explain all of the numbers you see on your rifle.

I was estictic when I saw the spec card for muzzle and throat erosion measured at a 1 and 1, couldn't believe my luck until I looked down the barrel. Totally copper fouled and full of crud, never cleaned, I couldn't believe how bad it was. I didn't dare put a bullet down it before a good cleaning. 3 days later and still scrubbing I figured it was time to shoot it, shot smooth as butter but I couldn't hit a 14 x 14 target at 50 yards. I'm an old National Match shooter and have been handling garands for almost 50 years so we went back to the basement and more cleaning. Finally after 2 more trips to the range and more scrubbing it was shooting 5" groups at 50 yards ! 1 land of rifling is discolored at the muzzle and the rifling is bright but looks very shallow. The barrel is crap and I'm going to replace it, very disappointed.

The selection of Garands at the CMP is dwindling in quantity and condition. At this point, what counts the most is getting a Garand with little to preferably no receiver pitting. It is a pity about the barrel, yet you still got a deal that’s unobtainable anywhere else; current Garand prices outside the CMP are miserable; M1 Carbine prices are obscene.

@@bravo0105 Absolutely true on the prices that's why I'm not swaqicking about the $300 to rebarrel to a new Criterian barrel. Still less than a grand invested.

      @hardball107 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@bravo0105 FYI, here it is 3 years later and I got it shooting by wrapping JB Bore Paste soaked patches around a brass bore brush, chucked it up in an electric drill and went at it for 3-4 minutes. Figured "What do I have to lose ?" Well there was a glob of copper on one of the lands in the muzzle but the workout with the JB and brush removed everything and the bore was pristine. Took it to the range and ran thru a couple clips and got serious. I hit the lottery. I had fit a GarandGear gas plug and with the barrel cleaned up that M1 put a full clip of my 150gr Hornady FMJ pushed by H4895 into just over 1" at 100 yards off the bench. Sights are spot on and regulated properly and ringing 8" steel at 330 yards is a breeze. It was a little effort but I'm ecstatic.

The various numbers you will find on the parts of the M1 rifle are not serial numbers but rather factory blue print numbers. The only number which is a serial number is located on the rear of the top of the receiver near the arsenal stamping.

A video from someone that didn't do ANY research BEFORE purchasing from the CMP. There is only ONE serial number on a Garand. The rest are part or drawing numbers. Buy a book before you hurt the rifle, or yourself. Join the GCA and that will help you. Before I went to the North store 13 years ago to buy my first Greek, I now have 4 SA, 3 H&R's and a tractor, I knew everything there was to know about the 4 manufacturers of these rifles and what to look for. It's amazing to me that anyone would buy a rifle without knowing the history of them or even where the serial number was.

There are several books you can buy from the CMP or Amazon authored by Scott Duff, Joe Poyer or Bruce Canfield that will educate you on the M1 Garand, its parts, when they were manufactured drawing numbers, heat lot numbers etc. There is no such thing as a true "WW2 rifle" any more. Anything and everything that dates to WW2 that is sold by the CMP, with the possible exception of something from the CMP auction site, is a mixmaster. There were post WW2 collector grade and correct grade Springfield and H&R rifles sold by the CMP, but those days have long gone.

All of the M1 Garands I've owned over the years came from the CMP's North Store up in Port Clinton Ohio...back when I lived up that way. The prices have gone up considerably since the last 1 I purchased, but of course the availability has went down. It was nice being able to hand-pick the ones I bought. But I've always considered trying out the mail order just for the excitement. Awesome rifle! Congrats, looks like a beauty! Also, as far as your markings...head over to the forums.thecmp.org/ Lots of great resources there for determining which parts are "correct" or not for your Garand. There are drawing numbers on all the parts and from that you can determine if it was manufactured around the time your rifle was made. 2.7Mil SA is definitely a WWII era rifle...July 44' your barrel is a 1954 post-war barrel.

Ok the barrel could be from 59 or 54. (I heard two dates and I don't remember which one went with the barrel) They made parts and barrels for refurbishment well after they stopped making the actual rifles. I don't know when they stopped making parts however since most of these rifles were sent overseas there is a very real possibility of foreign made parts as well. I believe I might have a Korean made gas cylinder on mine. As far as the bolt numbers, there will be a number saying what batch of metal was used and it's heat treatment, you can date them with those numbers. It's not an exact date but you can get close. My M1 is a Winchester and its serial number has it made in June of 43. It's bolt is a springfield bolt that was heat treated in I believe November or December of 43.
Basically just get online and search "how do I date X part of my Garand." There are countless sites out there. You can even date parts without numbers based on the slight taper of the machine marks and so on.
For the closing statement, since I already got mine, if you want a guaranteed WW2 made M1, then order a Winchester. Winchester only made them during the war. Springfield made them during the war and during Korea. International Harvester and Harrington made them during Korea only. Even though there is no official effort to keep the M1s with original parts I do believe that the armorer's do try a bit to keep them somewhat manufacturer correct. That is if they can. My Winchester just came with too many WRA marked parts for me to believe it just happened to make it through the three or four rebuilds like that.
