    Is it actually a rescue side to your rope? Seems to me that as soon as someone would place weight onto that side it would loosen your knot & retrieve it, causing both to fall (injured climber & rescuer) until rope hits crotch or knot...

    • @zaccheus
      @zaccheus  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ypu ate correct which is why I mentioned that it needed to be over a crotch or a union. I should have made that more clear in the video though 😬 There are similar spar anchors that do offer a retrieval side. I just learned about them and I think I'm going to start using them.

    Your videos are very entertaining... because there is pretty often a high probability that something does not go exactly as planned ;) Thank you for sharing and letting us learn too! Cheers :)

      Haha, thanks 😅 I honestly would prefer that things went to plan every time. I expect that will only get better with experience 🤷‍♂️

    Another interesting challenge, I sure like your humble attitude. Always thinking. And I like that long end to your spar tie in. No matter how long the next piece is, you don't need to retie, just keep going.

    Nicely done Sir, 👍 That said if I was climbing a tree like that I'd be ratchet strapping those two leaders together. That big union didn't look great, loads of included bark. Two or three heavy duty straps would have been good insurance.

    • @zaccheus
      @zaccheus  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Fair thought. I sometimes brace a tree before heading up higher. This one didn't really feel like it required it, but ratchet straps are pretty cheap 🤷‍♂️

    I like to do my dab cuts or kerf cuts or whatever you want to call them a little lower then my back cut like a couple inches so I don’t cut my corner out on my hinge. The corner are where all the control comes from supposedly. We have a lot of pecans which are a hickory. Crazy wood.

    • @zaccheus
      @zaccheus  ปีที่แล้ว

      Another fella mentioned that here somewhere. I feel like it doesn't make a huge difference to go lower or higher with it because once the fibers are severed, they don't offer much structure for the hinge. Your comment and the other are definitely going to have me looking into it though 🤔

    • @TheToolnut
      @TheToolnut 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agreed, the sapwood provides the strength to the hinge.

  • @Loosesapphire5135

    Just before you were making the side to side relief cuts I was going to say that's what I do in them hickory. Got to relieve that bark & wood as much as possible with how strong & fibrous they are.

    Good job, the salami cut was cool just make sure to unclip the bitter end of the lanyard that loop looked like it could be a problem if it fell into it or a branch caught it. Well done bro!

    • @zaccheus

    love your videos! very interesting climbs. My one question is, how often and how are you sharpening your chain? it seems to be cutting pretty slowly in some of your videos. Just wondered if it might help with the spear cuts etc if it were cutting a bit quicker. I've never cut hickory though so maybe it's just damn tough stuff!

    • @zaccheus
      @zaccheus  ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on how often I climb. If I'm climbing 5 days a week, I'll probably touch it up once a week. A chain lasts me just short of a season most of the time. You might be observing slower cuts when I'm making an angled cut. Due to the mechanics of how the chain severs the fibers, angled cuts will always be slower than perpendicular cuts. Hickory is a super tough wood too. It might have been a little too advantageous of my to try any bigger spear cuts on this hickory.

    • @elemental4rce
      @elemental4rce ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zaccheus i'm the same, i very rarely sharpen my top handles unless they're noticeable dull or there's somehow some metal/wire in the tree. Chains last me a very long time. I think you're right about the angled cuts and also the gopro footage does tend to make things look slower than the reality i find.

    while doing a snap cut, the upper cut must the closest one to you, ifnot it can lead your chainsaw to sting on the wood fiber and drag away with the piece your sending. Im sure you all know these informations anyway.

    • @zaccheus
      @zaccheus  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it's also okay to line the cuts up, but you gotta be a lot more careful to keep the top cut from being th farther one 😅

  • @birdisinfire
    @birdisinfire ปีที่แล้ว +1

    side cut are to be 1 to 2 inches below the notch, if not it can lead to hinge failure prematuraly

    • @zaccheus
      @zaccheus  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure I really subscribe to that theory. Once the fibers are severed, the friction between fibers offer little influence over the integrity of the hinge in my mind. I could be wrong of course 🤷‍♂️😅

    • @birdisinfire
      @birdisinfire ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you cut the side of the hinge it will most likely weaken it since the holding wood will be reduced and also its strength reside on its length mostly

    • @zaccheus
      @zaccheus  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@birdisinfire I agree, I'm thinking that the same thing happens if you make the cuts lower than the notch. It still weakens the hinge.

      @birdisinfire I appreciate your advice man, please don't be offended if I don’t take it blindly. I've learned a lot of folks sharing their thoughts in the comment section. I made some side cuts below the hinge just the other day in another hickory and the piece tried to take my saw because of it. I'll post a video of that here soon.

      @laneherrlinger7478 tha akimbo or unicender are both sweet tools for spar work. If you're already on a hitch, I'd recommend a rope wrench and adjustable bridge maybe. The rope wrench is a tall assembly, but you can also bend it around the spar to choke up tighter to it. An adjustable bridge will help with that too. The akimbo is dang expensive and some folk buy it only to find out that they don't really like it 😬
