Back when Madden actually had competition that's why. Imagine if NFL 2k was still around, how much better Madden would be today. NFL 2k5 was such a threat to Madden that EA decided to buy out the rights to the NFL which lead us to almost 20 years now of no competition for Madden. This is one of the big reasons why Madden today is garbage.

This is a great game .. I kinda liked Madden 2000 a little better though ... I would say Madden 98 and Madden 2000 are the best Maddens .... PS2 and original Xbox had a couple decent versions, but something about the PS1 versions I really liked ...

I agree. After the PS1 era games they got a lot more complex trying to replicate real football, I really enjoy the simplicity the PS1 versions offer. Still play the PC version of 2000 to this day, Madden had some great PC ports until 2002 when it became the same as the console versions.
