- We Race a ZL1 Camaro, Ariel Atom, TT Coyote Mustang, Turbo LS Silverado, and more at the Utah Motorsports Campus Roll Races! We just converted the turbo 8.1 to run on e85 and its running faster than ever! We bolted on our drag radials for a little extra traction, and the UglyTruck put in work with no complaints! Now we need to go back to a proper 1/4 mile dragstrip and see if we can break into a 10 second quarter mile!

any guesses as to the HP we're making on the UGT running E85? All I gotta say is it feels much stronger than ever before
Not sure about HP but I bet you’re getting like 1500lb ft of torque with that 8.1

the 8.1 is one of the most underestimated engines you'll ever come across they have the same rebuild life as the diesels. just an absolute workhorse that can be turned into a fast monster

You're fueling my ambition here LT! Right now I'm prepping my 4L80e for a turbo 6.0, looking to use e85 and HP tuners with stock ECU or a Holley. All going in a 60's crew cab c20. Congrats on the wins and holding your own!
I mean if you have hp tuners and the harness I'd say hp tuners if you feel like you need to go holley tou can always later but get it in and driving first for not any extra money

Love that 8.1 we got an 8.1 in a bigass sea ray boat at the shop and man that baby roars like thunder.
Ariel Atom is a track car, not a drag vehicle. I kinda figured you would have walked away. Being a big block guy myself, they definitely make lots of Torque which definitely makes the car fun.

Great job LT ,I noticed when you lifted at the end of your run smoke coming out of exhaust pipe, do you know why
Was going to ask the same thing, it probably has to do with the oiling on the turbo.
I believe it has to do with the internal PCV orifice the 8.1 uses… just a small hole drilled into the bottom of the intake going into the lifter valley

I really want a big block for my 1996 Buick Roadmaster sedan. The LT1 is pretty good for driving around town. But I want MORE!!!

That mach 1 at the end. Those are 5.2L very similar to a gt350. Basically the same without the flat plane crank.

That E90 was a 335i of some flavour. Definitely modified since it kept up the truck, which is a beast.

I always heard the 8.1L's cast crank was the weak link and would snap at 600HP (crank). You are clearly above that! Have you heard the same?

I have heard the same which is why I was so careful with this at first. On 14 psi it made 580whp, but we’re well beyond that now
@@LawrenceTolman exactly! I know the E85 lowers combustion pressure and EGTs dramatically which is great for pistons, but the rods and crank are still getting stressed well over 600hp. Exciting! Thanks for being the modern guinea pig. It may be that the 600hp limit is based on some assumed knowledge from years ago with less data than we have access to today.

FYI, Use a floor jack to elevate the trailer. You'll wear out the Tongue jack doing it the way you're doing it.

LT you need to pull that engine out, pull the heads off, add lots of ring gap, turn the boost up to 25 pounds and then stuff it into the COPO truck and you would have a giant slayer! Smaller, lighter, AWD would be a seriously rowdy truck! Then go looking for that twin turbo Mach 1.
I'm in Houston with a turbo silverado and stick shift camaro, I would kill to have events like this near me regularly.

the PCV system in these trucks is a very poor design, its basically just a hole drilled in the bottom of the plenum into the crank case
You did damn good considering you're driving a 4 door truck which is a lot heavier than those mustangs & that regular cab silverado!
I’m fitting an 8.1 with tremec 5 speed into a 76 Holden one ton ute here in New Zealand. I believe they were sold as the chev el toro ? In the USA. It’s a tight squeeze 😅

Ariel Atoms are fast but above around 110 they become aerodynamic bricks. the exocet has the same issue. most exo cars do. so with your torque and even being the size of an air craft carrier you coulda reeled him in. and i believe his gearing is super short comparitively too. its nuts how well Ugg rolls out . you and that ram charger were dead even. how cool

@Lawrence LT Tolman in some of the videos showing the end of the race, I noticed some smoke coming out if the exhaust on decel, is that normal for your setup?? Or was I just seeing things?
it was for sure smoking, and its done that since I turbo'd it some time ago... the PCV setup on the 8.1 is a small hole from the intake to the lifter valley, so the crankcase gets slightly pressurized in boost, then when I let off the gas the intake sucks in all the oil vapor

Such good racing from a kinda heavy truck. I have a couple of nbs trucks and they may not always be the fastest but they are just so much fun. You were hanging with modified lighter sports cars. LT out there reping the truck guys well! 👍
If that old heavy truck could loose some weight it would be a very competitive truck.

My Sierra has a 5.3 LM7, my Silverado has a 5.3 L59. You LS folks out there know the only difference is the L59 is "flex fule" and you bet your sweet ass im running that shit 👍 its noticeable, thats all I'll say, its definitely noticeable.
So a little extra power and this block might hit your 1000hp goal, as it's now north of 920 lolol awesome. Maybe the raylar intake on it for a few runs and bench port the stock one as I'm sure you can do better then others I've seen re welding them lol.. So glad it's apparently not weak piston material. Any weird idle noise would be question to be on the lookout. Be sure to give it a good listen during warm-up, every time but wow.
it's been holding up a lot better than I ever would've thought it would, I would've thought for sure that 20 psi would grenade it on the first pass
