Love that retro looking display! If they get this radio capable of alphanumeric channel names and dual display, I will definitely want one.

It is aesthetic as all heck that the display plastic looks the same as all other casing, but emits them freqs.
Purty cool. 123.45 and 122.650 are intersting non formal air chat freqs.

compander is a conpressor/expander ; In telecommunication and signal processing, companding (occasionally called compansion) is a method of mitigating the detrimental effects of a channel with limited dynamic range. The name is a portmanteau of the words compressing and expanding, which are the functions of a compander at the transmitting and receiving end respectively. The use of companding allows signals with a large dynamic range to be transmitted over facilities that have a smaller dynamic range capability. Companding is employed in telephony and other audio applications such as professional wireless microphones and analog recording

In the 1980s dbx tried to use it to control hifi tape hiss with mixed results. It was also integrated in MTS stereo analog TV audio.

Thanks for the tip with the TX/RX being reversed! I can now fix my programming for repeaters. The display is nice, but awful in sunlight. I also discovered that if you hold the down arrow and then turn on the radio, it opens it up for 20000 KHZ - it mentioned that as an option in the "instructions" which was one piece of paper.

Wonder if you have had a chance to test it on the airband.

I quite like the look of that little radio. The display does look rather different from many. I wonder how well it can be seen in bright outdoor lighting? It could be better than some of the full colour LCD display radios which you can't see in sunlight. I recently reviewed the Radtel RT-490 and it's great but the display is difficult to see outdoors!

Anyone try putting a higher gain dual band HT antenna on it like a Nagoya 717? I did and it appears to overload the front end to the point that it desenses the receiver and normally strong signals don't break the squelch. The same antenna on other HTs provides higher gain than stock.

this radio ( or radtel rt490, Abree AR-518, UV5118...) is a waste of money.
there is no 1750Hz tone burst for open the repeaters.
the offset operation is a nightmare.
you cannot write or edit a memory, only via the computer.
impossible to scan between 2 frequencies ( full band scanning only).
the "AM" mode is crappy . it is not AM.
to remove the ctcs it is tricky.. there in no off value. you have to go to the ctcss menu press 2 or 3 times the * to get the off ! and it is not written in the manual

Many possible answers - if it is radio to radio, probably 50 - 100 watts in VHF/UHF base station radios - but you would have to have a HAM license - or whatever your country requires. There are no handhelds that would be able to do that radio to radio. Possibly with a repeater...all depends on where you live.

  • @borayurt66

Motorola used the same type of display in their radios once. It is just a regular LED display hidden under a semi-transparent cover. It looks cool for sure but IMHO it is just a waste of very valuable battery power since LED displays consume much more power than LCD ones. It can be turned off as you said, but still, it will turn on when you press a button.

It seems that to grossly exaggerate the battery capacity is the "in" thing with some Chinese manufacturers right now. KSUN is a prime offender. My Ksun UV2D Is advertised as 4000mah (but the manual says 1400).... that's more like it. Do they not realize that we DO KNOW about these things...Other than that it's a great little radio. BTW Ksun also sells the SAME radio you have here, so there's another for the list. I do wonder if it's simply the same company/manufacturing plant, who is just changing the brand and a few triffles on different days of the week...???

I'd like to see you review the Baofeng BF-H7 (UV-99). It's kind of a sleeping giant of Baofeng radios, It's advertised as having a flashlight, but I couldn't find one on my H7. Alas, many of these radios are disposable. Why? Because once the battery is depleted, the radio becomes a paperweight. You can't buy them anywhere in the United States. H6 batteries are. Just not H7.
