THE SONG
‘When Gods Lie’ was of those tunes that come in a flash from the ether.
Remembering the times where you share your trust, your love, your belief in someone else; beautiful tender moments where you open up and perhaps raise them up a little too high above you. Then they fall - be it a lover, a friend, a celebrity icon, an ideology - those gods that we believed would hold us in our stupor forever, let go … for they are only human by design.
For me, the song embraces all of those aspects; the deeply personal experience of a lover letting me go, a friend dying too young, along with the more social rise/demise in the humanness of a once-beloved celebrity and the deep betrayal hidden within the folds of colonialism and/or religious fundamentalism. Perhaps most importantly one can deceive oneself and it is this awareness that the stories we tell ourselves shape our experiences - that empowers us. Once we have witnessed and felt ‘when gods lie’ … and chosen to see our part in the great fall - we are set free.
THE VIDEO
I’ve been really interested in the use of masks to play with identity and equally inspired by their power to evoke meaning, story and/or allow the narrative to be constructed by the viewer. ‘Masking’ as an art form - the face/body being a site to play with aspects of the human condition, technology, environment and culture - gives us the opportunity to explore. Along with being beautiful works of art, masks create a space/place to examine the beauty and being, identity and story… Who we are.
Gabi Maffey and Kalvin Fountain-Best designed and created the masks harking to our human ‘animal’ side with ‘creatures’ that are part human, part fantasy evoking identities that we choose to inhabit.
Director Lola Fountain-Best wanted to create a landscape to explore the connection between two individuals. The video was shot entirely on black and white super 8 film and the texture and richness of the super 8 creates the perfect, stark backdrop to do so. The masks represent the many sides of ourselves - characters we interchange with and embody, play with and explore - as much as we ourselves are a caricature. The video provides an opportunity to explore and discover the stories we tell ourselves.
