Re:Wild released their list of the 25 Most Wanted Lost Species in 2017, and since then, global conservation efforts have searched high and low for these missing species. Many remain lost, but some have been found.
In this video, we're looking at all 25 of the lost species on the list. When did they go missing and why? And what's being done to find them again?
1. Syr Darya Shovelnose Sturgeon (1960 Kazakhstan)
2. Wondiwoi Tree Kangaroo (1928 Indonesia)
3. Bullneck Seahorse (never observed in the wild, Australia)
4. De Winton's Golden Mole (1936 South Africa)
5. Zug's Monitor (1980 Indonesia)
6. Wallace's Giant Bee (1981 Indonesia)
7. Attenborough's Long-Beaked Echidna (1961 Indonesia)
8. Wellington's Solitary Coral (2000 Ecuador)

23. Somali Sengi (1968 Somalia)
24. Omiltemi Cottontail (early 1900s Mexico)
25. Fernandina Galapagos Tortoise (1906 Ecuador)
For those who don’t know, the golden mole was rediscovered November 30th. So this was the very, very, *very* last moment. Which is amazing! It’s still critically endangered, but it’s still around!
What year?
@@bhuggins6059 They meant the current one, I think.
@@PixelatedMouse9yep
@@bhuggins6059this year(2023) jst few days back...evn made headlines in some part of the world...really happy to see them...
As a South African this makes me so happy. Thank you @silverfire1248
Imagine being that guy who rediscovered two lost crab species and found two more, that is so cool that he got to do that and that it all happened
That’s amazing. That dude did a great job
Slight correction: The picture shown at 33:50 is not of Atelopus Sorianoi but Atelopus Onorei from Ecuador that is sadly also missing and feared extinct.
And in turn a slight correction for you;
Atelopus (s)orianoi
Atelopus (o)norei
I was expecting most to be lost, but I was pleasantly surprised so many have been refound! I hope we can work towards preserving them. Amazing video, thank you for your work!
With no sightings of the Formosan clouded leopard since 1983, it was declared extinct 2013. Until it was rediscovered February of 2019, when it was spotted for the first time in 40 years
Really?
I can correct this comment later, but I don't remember the Clouded Leopard being on this list. Neat fac though!
@@tylerl3030 it not ℹ wanted to mention. Because they are one of my favorite animals
This video is a perfect example of something I could listen to while working on a big project. His voice is so calm, and the video is very educating. The video is also 45 minutes long and is something I can watch without looking at the screen which is a very important factor.
Living in Hawaii, it's crazy how many of the remaining native animals & plants are/were lost, only to be miraculously found in random areas.
Damn
Forrest Galante getting roasted 🤣
De Wintons golden mole is critcally endangered.Poor thing.
That man who made the false claim of rediscovering the list species of turtle.....I seen him being interviewed on Joe Rogan and immediately didn't like him. Something about him really annoyed me. Now my inner cringe has been justified.
I remember his first appearance made him endearing and his enthusiasm was infectious. That all changed QUICKLY.
At 21:00 minutes when he talks about the host that thinks he discovered all these lost species but is usually wrong, the first name that came to my head was Forrest Galante. I looked it up and sure enough… 😂
I didn't realize that he was a fraud until watching this video. He seems to have quite a following online. I'm very sorry to hear that. He would fake something like that, It's a shame the scientific community hasn't been more vocal about exposing his exploits
@@henrystokes1987 You need a public platform to effectively spread information and unlike Galante, the scientific community doesn't have a high-rating Animal Planet TV show. Sadly, it takes a hell of a lot more work to refute a bullshit claim than it takes to simply make the bullshit claim in the first place
great video. terrible behavior of the tv show dude who picked up the tortoise.
His name is Forrest Galante
Y’all are cringe fr
@@MrDdeded If it's cringe to be annoyed by a rich American wanker trying to steal credit for discoveries provably made by others, then call me cringe and frigging proud of it.
Worst is that it's not even the only time he's done this. He also tried to steal credit for "rediscovering" the Rio Apaporis caiman despite the fact that it was already known not to be extinct and Sergio Balaguera-Reina had published a population survey on living Rio Apaporis caimans in 2019, before Galante even began filming in Colombia. This is a systematic thing for Galante and he deserves to be shat on for it
@@MrDdededhow
Really disappointed in the behavior of Forrest, tbh.
I used to watch Extinct or Alive a lot and it’s part of what got me interested in the show in the first place.
I always felt iffy about how he handled his episode on the Zanzibar leopard.
His portrayal of the natives is really judgmental and while what they historically did to the species is wrong they are entitled to their beliefs.
If he’s so confident that he may have found a Zanzibar leopard then why tell people about it?
If the natives are as superstitious as he portrays them then wouldn’t it just put the leopards in more danger?
And to take credit for someone else’s discovery is just plain wrong and super entitled. Smh.
Ps: I meant the show got me interested in possibly extinct animals, and to an extent these kinds of videos as well.
I couldn’t figure out how to edit.
@@joemungus6063No?
Tbf, supposedly the leotard's location is secret bc well don't want the last one(s) killed. The rest, idk, I've not seen it.
I absolutely love how these videos are longer documentary length. I love love love watching them while I study or eat breakfast. They’re so interesting and well made and your voice is so soothing to listen to. Thank you!
I honestly had no idea that Forrest Galante was so controversial in the scientific community, if that's the host they were referring to
Same I thought he was cool until this video
I still think he's cool and I think a lot of the scientific community that don't like him are just jealous and will do and say anything to tear someone down that brings a different way of getting the public interested in helping endangered animals.
@@mathiasrausch9935jealous of what? Being a douche?
Urban explorers have a saying" take only photos leave only footprints".
Thanks to you, I am now on email list of rewild. And I will donate what I can when I can. 😽
Shoutout to Pierre Mvogo Ndongo for doing more work in days than most organizations in years
That story about the tortoise made me so angry, it's the most blunt and absurdly evil act of colonialism in science I've heard
Worst part is that google searches it says he found 😒
Ooh, I was actually waiting for you to cover this topic and I’m really happy you eventually did, you’re like my favorite TH-camr now and I replay all your stuff all the time, thanks for being one of the only nature TH-camrs who covers endangered and extinct species in depth, it’s something I’ve been fascinated with since I was a kid
I just finished watching your last video and was praying you’d make one on this list, I’m thrilled to see it’s already here! Thank you for all the effort you put into these videos. One of my favourite channels by far
This was just the video I was looking for! After one of your recent videos I really wanted to know more about the 25 most wanted lost species. So thank you for creating this masterpiece. It must have taken quite a while to accomplish, given how long the video is!
Thanks for posting a video on this topic ! I have been intrigued by it since you brought it up in one of your earlier videos. A fantastic video as always .
Awesome video as always. I'm very happy that you managed to sneak the rediscovery of the golden mole at the last moment, funny how it kinda seemed make on purpose.
TIL: Forest Galante isn't very trustworthy, and that makes me kind of sad. I wonder if Animal Planet makes him do these things for ratings?
He makes a lot of these claims on his own individual website, so he definitely deserves blame even if Animal Planet are egging him on with it
so glad your channel is growing so fast you make amazing content!!
Very interesting topic, I’m really enjoying the content you’re posting!
All the best Jules 💕👍
Excellent and very comprehensive coverage with some good research.
I love your production. Good cadence, barely noticable music, its relaxing.
Great watch, saved this vid for future viewing. Thanks for another awesome video although it is a bit sad to know that most of them are lost. Hopefully, they will be rediscovered
I use to look up to Forrest, now, after this video and some others, I’m rethinking my admiration
As Am I really makes me question looking up to him
I throughly enjoyed this. Please make another.
You make incredible content❤ Truly you are an inspiration to me and I look forward to future videos, Thank You !
More videos like this please! This was amazing!!
The best nature channel I have seen
Another great video
I love these videos mate.
You're one of my favorite channels!
What a great watch. Well done
Loving your videos. How about one on abundant species in alarming decline, passenger pigeon of the year kind of thing. Or large groups going down together, insects, moths, amphibians etc.
Love these videos
Wow omg the watercolor paintings at 1:52 are so gorgeous!!!
I never watch wildlife shows. But I always watch your videos. Thank you.
Fascinating stuff. Thanks for the content... new subscriber here 👋
Amazing as always here I am once again asking for a newt and salamander video
Man, fame went to Forrest's head FAST. I used to live his enthusiasm for wildlife, but right now... blech
Cool video 👍
Good video!
Because of this channel, I've been learning more and more about extinct and lost species!!
I would love to see more uncommon extinct/lost species. Please create more about these types of videos!
I love to learn about critters that have gone extinct and had less popularity. They are all unique!
Pretty weird seeing a vertebrate with a lifespan less than a year.
I love the obvious disdain for F***** G*******. Not even saying his name is next level. He's overly sensational and confuses his audience on very real issues of Conservation. Well done taking a stand!
OK but the guy who shot 8 of that rare monkey species was excessive 😮💨
Right???
Uh finally the cute mole is discovered again ☺️
OMILTEMI COTTONTAIL MENTIONED! I have been obsessed with those little guys for years!! I hope some are spotted soon, I'd love to have more than one photo of one to look at fondly.
50 new species everyday? I never knew that, that's wild
Super video.
I saw a heartbreaking picture this week of 3 dead pink river dolphins on a mudflat formerly Amazon river branch. Worst draught in 120 years and degraded forest after the fires, i fear the next list of presumed extinct may rapidly expand as we speak 😢
This channel is so highly underrated that it irritates me!! YT please push it harder
Thanks! I too want YT's blessed algorithm push.
There is one observation for the pondicherry shark on inaturalist posted 2 weeks ago, though the id isn't conclusive
It’s pretty hard to ID them from pictures to be fair, since there’s so many similar looking black tipped sharks haha, but you never know, hopefully one will be caught and analyzed soon
Seeing that cute Echidna waddle warms my heart ♡
Lindsay Nikole collab when?
A list dedicated to just plants would be interesting
Forrest Gallante apparently retracted taking credit for the tortoise discovery and credited to the proper party, though he evidently was part of the expedition that rediscovered it
loved it
Wallace's giant bee?! What the... youre safe!
Oh my god that mole is the cutest thing I’ve ever seen and I want a plushie of one NOW
Dang. I really had no idea Gallante was a fraud.
I'm completely absorbed in this. I had the pleasure of reading something similar, and it was truly absorbing. "Reclaiming Connection: The Journey of a Digital Detox" by Joshua Ember
I think it is sad that some of these species are caught and collected (killed) for science. I think it is best some of these populations are simply left alone. I find it counter productive
Definitely thought this was some elaborate Spore lore exploration from the preview. Happy to learn it’s IRL elaborate spore lore. Biologists, feel free to rename yourselves elaborsporlorologists. You are welcome.
What are you talking about?
Not happening
Can you talk about the new animals added?
Hello. Please make a documentary about the Gaoligongsan mountains hedgehog. It's a pretty much extinct species as of 2025
2024 only JUST started
Sounds like Extinct or Alive needs to be thrown into the abyss.
21:50 why you gotta do the Brofessor like that, damn
Finds an extremely rare, never before seen species.
Proceeds to capture and kill it to put in a museum collection.
44:20 slight correction he did run front of him however he doesn’t say that he found the species he says”we” as he did do some work in helping as a is a legitimate scientist who genuinely cares about animals
Greetings
You missed mentioning the Rancho Grande harlequin toad (Atelopus cruciger), located in Henry Pittier Nat Park and declared extinct in 1986 and rediscovered in 2008, which is still in critical danger of extinction due to the restricted distribution of the few remaining populations.
If it was rediscoveed in 2008, it can't be on a Lost Species list 10 years later
@@eljanrimsa5843 ok ok understand,
This video only included species on the Re:wild’s Lost Species
For those who dont know, the wondowoi tree kangaroo was re-discovered in 2023.
Mekosuchus should be on the list
Well…unfortunately one of the things that this video makes quite clear is…that host dude from the tv show “extinct or alive” is an absolute douche and the show itself is completely untrustworthy imo🤦♀️😅
The Syr Darya Sturgeon is on my catch list
I would argue species that have only been seen once are not lost, quite the opposite, they have been found. Whether it was the last one of their kind that was found remains to be seen, but seems extremely unlikely.
Kinda disagreed
Great job America
So proud of us.
Maybe another category inconclusive would be ok
That's what lost is. Lost doesn't mean yup 100% extinct.
It’s called possibly extinct
A Canadian conservation group just bought most of the trophy animal licenses available to protect the area. That is action, there is a Re wild association with kicking people out of rural areas and to stop sustenance hunting. As long as there are homeless and low income areas hunting is a cruel fact not many humans will let their kids starve and neither would a lion.
How fo they know they have an adult specimen if they only have a one or 2 specimens?
Honestly, screw "Extinct or Alive", sure they did some minor good on educating the public on endanged species but the host is a menace to science and other cultures.
He has good intentions
@@jordyb57🤦♂️
I remember when the show show the man finding the Galapagos tortoise 🤦🏻♂️ it’s bullshit like that that makes Americans look so bad
De winion's golden mole is not ded😂😂
There is still a pair of I rebuild woodpeckers here in Northern Florida I will not reveal their location for their protection believe it or not it's true but have faith it is and maybe you'll see their young soon I will stay anonymous as a bird watcher I wouldn't even let the watchers that were with me which were amateurs anyways know that I spotted these birds they need to stay protected and anybody that spots them needs to keep it to if they care at all for the species 🧐👀👀👀👀👁️ I am watching you watching me when all along I was watching you 👾👽😎
Subspecies Lives Matter !!!
.
I've always had doubts about the host of the show extinct or alive.
.
I've read that the Maori of New Zealand introduced the Polynesian Rat. These rats decimated the small animal species of New Zealand. The bats would have been under great pressure to survive. With the introduction of European rats, yikes!
Good job on not name-dropping the Animal Planet host. That man needs some chips taken out of his ego, to say the very least...
Many species are lost due to isolation from the outside world like extinct animals with ranges in Myanmar, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan and Iran
Sorry, it seemed you kept hitting your head there!
Forrest has done this sort of thing multiple times. He took credit for the langurs, and caiman he “rediscoved” when they already had been found prior to his expedition
He's involved in a lot of scandals with scientists. He makes outrageous claims for the sake of improving ratings and gaining clout.
If scientists today 2024 can take genetic material in soil samples of animals poo from 50,000 years ago and detect which species are still were there in that environment genetically why can't we do the same here for modern day species soil collection we have a DNA markers genome sequence for this species from the one that it was obtained back in 1928 still around they can still take samples from it if they could get the people out into these areas I know it's going to be difficult but ask the native people to take you into these areas and get soil samples you might be able to get detections on these species being still alive today At least you'd be all at the worst figure out where the range is And that way you could narrow down your searches to where you want to check for this species in the wild today. why can't that be done? hell the process of detecting species through dna from fecal material that was put down a 100 to two hundred and a half million years ago. literally two and a half million years ago They discovered dna in soil samples that have been frozen in glaciers or under glaciers when you do extend that and see if it works in other areas of the world.
Seems like there is a bunch of pompous people and debate about this and that.
The cloud rat of the Philippines is not lost
There are several different species of cloud rat. This video was talking about a specific species (Crateromys paulus) that is lost. Wikipedia article list 21 species, 3 of which are marked as extinct.
Some species are meant to be lost i always think about the species that went extinct before man would we have tried to save them even if they were doomed to extinction
That is not true
Why you throwing so much shade at forest😂
so....what
Calling Forrest Gallante an unserious scientist is a real sign that, no matter how well produced this video is, I cant take scientists seriously anymore. They don’t like him on a personal basis, because he doesn’t fall in line with what they want him to do.
Can’t subscribe even though I like the content a lot
Womp womp boo hoo
I think you are just sensitive
Yeah because being an asshole with no respect for wildlife is the behaviour of a serious scientist
No-one has a personal dislike for him. There are very real and serious issues with what he represents. By sensationalising innaccurate and unscientific research, Gallante and other programs and institutions like him confuse the general public as to the real situation in the conservation of these species. This contributes to a misallocation of funding and not taking urgent issues as seriously as they should be if one charismatic Zimbabwean can just go out and find something again.
Also please refrain from not taking "scientists seriously anymore". One disagreement within the field of Conservation Biology which I assume is not a field you are a part of and now you disregard science in general? Scientists include your doctor, the people who pioneer vaccines, the people who designed the very device you used to type and share your comment. Keep the faith in science, not in Gallante.
