I think the recent lengthy video where John and Ed went did a collection video on Ed's collection was purely a long advert for a G-Shock and then waxed lyrical on that watch collections can be started with a G-Shock....and then finished the interview with them spending 500k on 2 rare Spiderman APs. It was literally other worldly video, it was interesting but it featured 2 very wealthy and connected watch collectors. I think that the reason its not selling, is that the whole video was a middle finger to use mere mortals that could never afford any of the watches in Ed's collection other than the G-Shock. So I wasn't keen on buying a Ed Sheeran.

I couldn't possibly think of two people that could put me off buying a watch more than John Mayer and Ed Sheeran.
I wouldn't play the PRS Sliver Sky (which is an amazing guitar) in case someone saw me and thought I liked John Mayer.
@@theloneranger2101 if you watch the recent Hodinkee video with John and Ed at the end of the collection video they both purchase a 250k AP each, after promoting Ed's G-Shock, it wasn't really a benefit to the collection video. The Audermar Piguet did a Marvel Edition of the Royal Oak with Spiderman. And personally it looks awful and akin to a kids toy watch.
In that way, anyone who buys anything wealthy and dares to take it outside is giving the middle finger to us mere mortals. That makes no sense - did you expect them to just buy Seiko 5s their whole life?
@@kart182 no, I think you misunderstood my point, the whole collection of EDs is other worldly, how many people get to go to Patek and design their own watches.
Even Ed admits that his watches are locked in a safe 99% of the time and he has a full time body guard when he’s wearing any of his prized pieces on stage.
I don’t expect people to only wear a Seiko 5. The collection video was interesting but it aimed to include mere mortals with the G Shock advert. Then 500k spent
I did look at this watch but I decided to get the yellow "Casioak" instead. It's: cheaper, more modern, better looking, has Bluetooth and Solar Power.

I’ve got a yellow 2100 and I think it’s a perfect summer watch, especially on the beach. All the faux ink stains are just tacky and as someone else said the video they did was an out of touch cringe fest.
The best G-Shock is on sale at Argos for £80, the 5610 😊
I've got a yellow 2100, too. Love it. As well as being yellow, it's a good watch and about £30 or more cheaper than this. No idea who or why anyone would buy this over an original 6900.
Have the yellow 2100 as well, and you're right it's a great summer watch, and to the gym. The color is fun, a good reminder to not always take things too seriously.
I think Hodinkee used the Mayer edition G-shocks to generate buzz and create commodity. The Mayer/Sheeran video was a great advert for the yellow watch. I think they overproduced these, created way more numbers than the Mayers. “‘Limited’ to 500,000 units”
This watch is like a new marvel movie that no one asked for.
I always used to find my black G-Shock GWM5610U a bit boring, but now I think it's cool. 😅

I do love color, done tastefully, like a bright colorful dial. However, garish is just to kind for this watch. The missus is going to have a field day with this one!

I have that one. I think the only G Shocks worth buying are the the solar/atomic ones. But I’d buy this one because I love Ed Sheeran and G Shock.
It’s a bit cheeky for Casio to keep releasing special edition 6900’s with the same, outdated module.

So there I was, washing dishes while watching this video when that damned door chime sounded off! My GSD Hans’ hackle rose up as he began to aggressively run for the door, but I was able to restrain his barking by verbally coaxing him to remain calm! 😅
Bought it immediately, slapped it on my wrist everyday since. I love it, it catches my eye at random times and reminds me of sunshine and fun and all the things that should be in my life right now. It’s the only watch I’ve ever worn that has gotten multiple compliments from random people. The style of the watch isn’t really the issue, if you wear it like you love it other people will see what you like about it too. If you fret over the price to module ratio or turn your nose up at the very idea of collabs or have some weirdly specific hate on for Mayer or Sheeran or Hodinkee don’t buy this watch. You will miss the whole point of the thing and feel silly wearing it.
No need for an inquiry to find out why that thing hasn't sold out! 😂

The yellow Casio Oak with Bluetooth did well. I got one.
I have a yellow Casioak that is quite nice looking and great to wear from time to time(!)
I think it's a combination of the reasons given.

I still own and often wear my beloved, perfectly working, probably 25+ yo gw6900 (my second gshock ever). I actually kinda like this yellow variant.
Nice review again Russell. Having owned 50 + watches of varying price points and designs and from relatively inexpensive to "oh should I have bought that", I just received mine, my second G-Shock after buying this one whilst hoovering a few beers. And let's face it, no regrets even if it hasn't sold out. It's only $185 and yes it's a G and I may have to hoover a few more beers before I wear it but it's not really a big deal and it's still limited. Let's face it. It's not going to challenge anyone for a top slot but it's fun and although I'll only wear it as a novelty I can always gift it to an Ed Sheeran fan for their appreciation.

Love the ticket statement regarding 'Structural Integrity ' 2 of my G Shocks bezels have crumbled due to the type of plastics used in the early vintage ones so hopefully this issue has been addressed with the newer versions
Get the Honda super cub, I saw it yesterday its beautiful on that blue and white cloth band, a new release....man you made me love Casio and Seiko my two favorite brands!
Hi, nice review as always. Talking about the EL backlight, I feel like Casio's dimming the EL backlight on newer G Shock models, I have a GW-6900 that I got this year and it has a very dim, weak backlight compared to my GW-M5610 which I got it back in 2017.
so, £160 for a slight screen colouration, some felt tip on the dial, a metal thing to hold the strap in place and some endorsement?..... nah
also, pretty sure you can just get a yellow 6900 still. also i do agree with the wife, yellow g-shocks do kinda slap. i got the gbd-200 one and the solar 2100 in yellow is on the maybe list

The banana fighting with fountain pen quip was hysterical. Russell, you never fail to amuse. With respect to this 6900, I'd rate it a (-). I did struggle through Mayer and Sheeran's horological bro-down only to see the watches, most of which I found to be garish and ostentatious.
I have a yellow watch....the Blancpain X Swatch Pacific Ocean. Yellow has features in other watches too. All depends on what we like..... Sheeran would have made more money designing a cool pair of trainers instead.🙂

Oddly, after watching a video on this watch it sent my 18 year old son on an internet search to get himself a G-Shock, he loves his F91w I got him this year! He wants a G-Shock just not a yellow one 😂😂

I don’t think it’s the color. The yellow ‘casioak’ is quite popular.
I think it has to do more with his fanbase being uninterested.
It’s also not worth the upcharge.
I own a shop in Glasgow and have a casio GA2000 carbon core in yellow and have reduced the price to £50 and can't get rid of it. I wont be stocking any Casios in future haha people just want to buy from amazon etc.

I have the Blue John Mayer 6900 and I love it. Nothing wrong with a yellow G-Shock- to me it seems like a fun summer wear. I just don’t think Ed Sheeran has the mojo to move these.
What?! The man is a global name, sells out 20,000 seat plus arenas and is one of the most influential watch collectors in the world. Plus, all the fanboys and fangirls (like myself) who will buy it just because it’s Ed Sheeran.
It doesn't have a hidden graphic when you use the backlight. Kind of underwhelming. But I do like the yellow color.
I'll stick with my florescent rectangular G-Shock GBD-200 i think... Though i do have a yellow GBA-800 im trying to shift, maybe i need to get the black marker pen out and draw over it in patches... £$€¥
I bought one, because I like yellow watches and I like the fact it's a speeshal edition. Could not care less about flipping I just like to wear things I like.
I think I would be more inclined to buy the “limited edition” Bruce Lee Seiko 5 than this since the contrast of black and yellow is more tastefully done.
I don't mind the yellow color it's very summery but the ink stain and pen scratch detailing make it look gaudy and tacky, the backlight is disappointing and it's only a basic module which makes it overpriced tack overall, the John Mayer G-Shock offers more watch for the bucks, I think.
If you want bright colours in your G-Shocks, there's other variants that are better offers in price, functionality and in looks, like my bright red Casioak.
It would be a good watch for Dortmund , a town in Germany , these are the colours of the local soccer -team ! 😉😉
Not for me , l have 2 vintage yellow GShock divers so no point investing in Eddie boys ink splashed monstrosity

I have all 3 John mayer ones and almost went for this one. I was a few hours late to the drop and saw they weren't sold out yet that was my red flag to not touch it. Glad I didn't. I love the dial but the rest of the watch is pretty ugly.
love your 'show' very entertaining and made me put quite a few watches on my wishlist.. love your little ha-ha at the flippers, i know its crap but flippers are the reason i never got my hands on a swatch/omega moon watch..flippers ruin quite a lot of 'nice things'

The yellow is certainly not the problem (at least in my opinion). I suggest it is the fact that most G-Shock fans (particularly me) are not "head-over-heels" fans for Ed Sheeran, the packaging is ordinary (unlike the John Mayer collab or the new A Bathing Ape collab), and (main reasons I care nothing for this watch) the design is based on the album art (did I mention I am not an Ed Sheeran fan). I believe this was an attempt to get Ed's fan base (mostly young girls/women) to possibly buy this watch impulsively.

I love G shocks- but I wish they wouldn’t keep putting lcd circles on their watches that don’t do anything nobody ever uses them, they are just not needed.
The 'brown spot banana' colorway is not for me.
Just want to put this out into the ether, limited edition usually more expensive in time. Also you could look at the Rolex cosmograph which never as popular as the submariner.
I'd buy this - keep hearing it hasn't sold out, but that doesn't appear to be in the UK market. If you, or anyone has a link to buy this in the UK, please share.
You can get the yellow/grey 90s reissue for $130 MSRP. Much better option if you want a yellow DW6900.

I love yellow G-Shocks but I would be more inclined to buy a ripen banana themed G-Shock than a Hodinkee/Ed Sheeran collaboration one.

I love you man! You make this watch game fun, and get me laughing all the time. I’m new to watches, apart from a few Gshocks over the years. I’ve recently picked up a used Hamilton Khaki Quartz and I have a Khaki mechanical pvd (old pricing) on the way, but honestly thinking of sending it back. I’m pretty happy with the Quartz one to be honest, and it cost me $140 usd used. Anyways, thank you for all of your insightful views. Enjoying your videos from the other side of the pond my friend!

My utter lack of shock 😅 where to start , well ed Sheeran may be a watch guy , arnt we all, but his music is listened to my old women who have magic FM on while doing the ironing, not by people that will buy this watch , so its not attracting the g shock wearer is it and by putting Ed's name to a £100 watch and then charging over twice the price (some asking x4 the price on ebay) means there is no winner winner chicken dinner with this one 😂😂😂
Somehow the artwork behind the dial looks a bit washed out, if it was more vivid to match the resin strap, it would look better.
This (similar to the previous John Mayer G Shocks) is a very cool collaboration for fans of Ed Sheeran and Hodinkee. I must admit that I am far more familiar with both John Mayer and Ed Sheeran as watch collectors rather than for their music and as far as Hodinkee goes, I enjoy watching Talking Watches but otherwise don’t really engage with their content so this isn’t really one for me.
I’m also always a bit turned off by the whole limited edition/forced scarcity thing as it usually means scalpers and what have you. When you said this Ed Sheeran version hadn’t instantly sold out I thought that with the craziness around the John Mayer/Bamford G Shocks and the whole MoonSwatch thing that maybe watch enthusiasts are finally getting fed up with the limited edition marketing! But I think I’ve over thought it and you’re absolutely right, it hasn’t sold out because it’s a bright yellow watch! 🍌

I like yellow/black watches - have a yellow Screwback from 1988 but I don’t really like this one. To be fair, I really only like Squares, though.
I own over 40 Casio’s, two thirds being G-Shock, but I have no interest in this edition, not unless I can get one for under £60, maybe then I’d add one to the collection. Just maybe. Now though, I want a bowl of custard.

I've got a yellow baby G that might be my favorite watch so I wouldn't say the color is what's wrong with it. I think the over all look just comes across as half baked, if you know his music you might recognize the inspiration, but for the rest of us it just looks kinda sloppy, where as the JM and Bamford G shocks are very well thought out color palettes and don't add weird graphics, they're just a nice color choice on an already established design

Also a bit dodgy that it sounds like the black splotches will rub off over time...or do they mean the text on the face...not good either way.

I love Casio and I love the G-shocks. But seriously, like you said it's a souvenir. Frankly for that amount of money you can get some better watches.
It might just be me but it could be that Casio has reissued the same watch, over and over in different colors.

Why isn't it selling?
1) Well, it's Hodinkee. Those folks have gotten off on the smell of their own farts for so long that they think the Hodinkee tax they put on everything will be minded by buyers. Why give them your money when you can buy something better for the same or less amount???
2) Ed Sheeran? I'm not a 12-14 year old girl so WTF would I want to advertise I'm a Sheeran fan? Are the folks that buy this going to put it along side all their Justin Bieber memorabilia?
I wish casio would do these collectors editions with some of their solar watch models. I'd be more interested.
It's not a looker. The recent 6900 collaboration with Livestock looks much better in my opinion.
Even though I have the Casioak I'm not a lover of GShocks and this one up close looks and reminds me of a Teletubbie, sorry Edd, what was you thinking

After the pocket watch case , the tank shape case , the oyster shape case , the Genta shape case , the Casio g-Shock case , Ed Sheeran decided to not go all out and commission a rainbow colored dildo shaped case from Casio like he probably initially wanted , but instead just went the banana spurt color route , I think his customers voted with their dollars and clearly signified him that he wasn't bold enough this time around !
