Cutting Practice: Chinese vs. European Swords

  • Swordsage brought a number of LK Chen swords to try out. They are reproductions of Han Dynasty (206 BCE-220 CE) designs. I was surprised by how light they felt, while retaining plenty of cutting power.
    You can also see the difference in technique when cutting tatami mats. He learned sword handling through Chinese martial arts and utilizes somewhat different body mechanics than what I'm used to from my practice of HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts).
    Definitely interesting, and a lot of fun!

    For the people watching, I feel I need to stress this: please don't view my cutting skills as high level. I haven't got nearly the amount of cutting practice that Skall has, and I was also trying to practice waist movement here instead of just plain having fun cutting targets, and it shows I'm still trying to get it right.

      @eagle162 4 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      @@TGPDrunknHick been awhile since I seen the video but here goes.
      1) fails to realize the curvature was for other purposes besides cutting such as helping with defecting blows, quick drawing the blade from a scabbard and helps to aligh the edge.
      2) not realizing the katana has various degrees of curvature, like the koshi sori and curved hilts that further extends the curvature.
      3) ignore other sugata such as shobu zukuri and such.
      4) the various degrees of curvature mentioned before well it could also be straight (mu sori) kind of makes his arguments for a straight blade katana irrelevant.
      4) talks about how the curvature interferes with stabbing, not really there are ways you can get a good stab from the blade such as holding it sideways or with the edge facing up, but even with holding the sword the normal way you can still stab with it by using your elbows a certain way basically stab with the curvature instead of stabbing straight like you would a longsword, also the curvature can help in moving your opponent's blade further away from you.
      5) somebody pointed is out in the comments another problem is his wrist,he's not holding it properly so he's not seeing any benefits, don't know how true that is but I figure to bring it up.
      6) goes on to say Katanas do not have much variety but they do here are some examples.
      meiboku.info/guide/form/zukuri/index.htm meiboku.info/guide/form/kissaki/index.htm meiboku.info/guide/form/sori/index.htm
      7) the crossguard argumen, he argues for a crossguard on the katana, but doesn't realize crossguards were a thing in Japan use it on weapons like yari pin.it/3zowbbe4uebnfr
      Even some handheld weapons came with crossguards that was use in combination with a katana but were not use on the katana itself showing it was not necessary, also fails to realize the tsuba came in different shapes and sizes (some small, some quite large)
      8) as for technology, the technology was fine it was not at all behind the west.
