This is probably the best DA sketch ever, absolutely fine tuned for total frustration and confusion. Truly a master at work. Miss him even decades later.
I watched these with my parents, I think it was Saturday night viewing. Not only has this stood the test of time, but it is clean funny comedy unlike so much comedy today. Like a lot of people here I watched this when it was new on 1 of 3 channels, so much simpler back then.

Me and my dad (I’m now over 45) watched this when it first come out and I have never seen him laugh so hard, before or since. Dave Allen was superb. His bit on the car following him is just as funny.
Sometimes I'd laugh at things I didn't understand cos I wanted the auld fella to think I appreciated Dave too. Judging by his sideways glance, probably some lewd innuendo by rights a 5 year old shouldn't understand😂
The most genius sketch ever at illustrating both the absurdities of the English language, and understanding and relating so lovingly to the mind of any young child. I wish I was a child of Ireland in many ways - they just seem to 'get it' all so well and have a laugh at the same time..
One of the best sketches ever written, delivered by one of my favourite comedians. I have seen this so many time but I still cannot help doubling with laughter.
My little boy has problem reading books even though he managed to graduate from pre-school. The trainer sensed concerns that he might be able to enroll grade and advised to hold him back. But I didn’t stop trying right until I discovered this particular *4ChildrenReading. Com* a reading guidebook. His own reading abilities are excellent for the 1st grade student and also his development definitely surprised the trainer. She also stated the story to other people.
My parents gave up trying to teach me how to tell the time on a standard clock and bought me a digital watch. 😂 My brother told me to watch "Playschool" which was for nursery aged kids and I learned to tell the time on a standard clock. I was 10 years old at the time. 😂
"If someone asked you what time it was and you didn't know you would feel stupid!" "Well why doesn't he feel stupid? He doesn't know the time either." Hilarious, and a typical answer you would get too! xD
Favourite comedian in our home. My dad being northern Irish. Loved him. He was so good at relating to what was happening around him. My favourite sketch is the two funeral parties trying to get the church first. Still makes me laugh still. 😂😂
It's been 50years since I saw this crowded into a tv room at boarding school and I can still laugh to my hearts content. I believe I and many others miss that kind of highly intelligent humor. I
It's like like words 'Minute' and 'My nyoot'. (The second spelling I did to clarify the different pronunciation) Both words are actually spelt the same. I can understand why non English speaking people find our language confusing!
"..the third hand is the second hand" - everyone knows where it's going! LOL! Fan-bloody-tastic! I love that he's actually saying that it's not that easy for kids to learn how to tell the time on an analogue clock...and it isn't!
My dad's favourite comedian. I injured my leg laughing so much at one of his live gigs in Melbourne back in he 80's. The injury to the leg? An irish tragedy: I kicked it up in a fit of laughter so hard at Dave's antics, that my shin caught the sharp cast iron base of the seat in front of me- causing me to laugh and cry at the same time.
I can't watch him without thinking of my, (late), father. He was a devoted fan of Dave Allen and whenever he was on TV we kids would have to sit in absolute silence in case we made a noise and he missed any of the jokes. Having to hold a cushion to our mouths for fear of laughing was no joke. " Thank you, good night and may your God go with you ".
I just lost it when he said that the third hand is the second hand, that had me in stitches. One of the greatest laughs I have had in quite some time. :D
Strangely enough, it was a Spaniard who had lived in Sweden for years, now back in Spain, who brought Dave Allen up in the conversation at lunch today - gracias Roman!
I'm Irish Catholic with Irish parents. British and Irish humour have their intersectional points. Dubliners receive British broadcasts and vice versa on Britain's west. Much of it is similar and loved in both islands.
Brilliant stuff from a truly great comedian, sadly missed. Modern comics could learn a lot from this man. He only swears for emphasis and when he does he uses it like a verbal grenade........
As you say Brilliant stuff, this really is comedy at its best, what i don"t understand is that i have got the Best of Dave Allan on DVD but for some weird reason it don"t have this sketch included on it,yet it has to be among the best he done!

Anybody who is currently on here and loves this guy as much as me watch BBC2 tonight Dave Allen night.Saturday TV suddenly is worth watching.Words can't express this man's ability to have u in stitches talking about life
My generation grew up with Dave Allen so all you young ones out there might not be able to read a clock but you should now understand the meaning of the generation gap, yes?
Man I miss the era when Dave Allen At Large was tops. I remember being a kid still going to primary school & watching his BBC show on a Sunday night when & I shudda been in bed. On Monday, us kids who were able to stay up to watch him couldn't wait to tell our classmates about his mad cap comedy sketches. Being a through Irishman he never took his background serious, his piss-take on religion, sex, & everyday life was hilarious. Another great comedian sorely missed in this time of mediocrity.
How has this got so many dislikes? I know that some people will get offended by absolutely anything (some people just wake up looking for reasons to say they are offended by something) but come on, this was hilarious while being completely family friendly and totally inoffensive
The lunacy of how we live our lives beautifully illustrated by the master storyteller. I first saw this as a kid and remember wetting myself with laughter!!
me too.. my dad let me watch him at a tender age of about 9..he was so funny ..but my dad.. laughed so loud ..he understood more then what i did with the gags

The way he constructed his jokes was pure genius.

Yes pure genius !
With all the repeats on TV why has Dave Allan's shows not been repeated. Pure genius😄
he didn't want that

Sadly not PC.

As a primary school teacher I can relate to this so much!!! 🤣Teaching time is so difficult.
Kids only want to know one time... Home time ;-)
👍 it is so difficult - they need to know fractions and 5 times tables
I'm glad someone is doing it! There are high school students who are unable to read a classroom clock today.
Couldn’t agree more!
Now is the only real moment, we are magic in creating arts & skills.
kind regards Leg-ends
