    We've talked about it forever, but A/B thumbnail testing would be a game changer.
    Also, on the topic of "if I took a break, would my views drop".... well they would. Something no one ever talks about is this: Any channel has X% of subscribers who no longer watch their content, but is mitigated when their Y growth is greater than X. But taking time off means no more Y growth, even while X continues to grow. Why does no one at TH-cam ever talk about this? I know a guy who has over 100k subs, but gets only a few hundred views per video.

    • @TechWeLove
      @TechWeLove 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup, I totally agree. I want A/B Thumbnail testing as well. ❤️ I do not have enough money to pay Tubebuddy for their A/B Thumbnail Testing Service.

    #4 is a big problem, I have seen videos with better watch time and CTR underperform other channel videos. The algorithm gives too much power to people that are already being promoted since their videos are immediately mass recommended and beat out potentially stronger content. It also makes it nearly impossible to get re-discovered since TH-cam doesn't give your channel a fair chance compared to others.

    • @Malibutomi
      @Malibutomi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Totally agree....channel which are promoted get a lot of views because the algorithm pushes them even if the content is poop.

      @Lucidity4ALL 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeap same issue here. You can check the quality of I do and what other TOP amateur channel does. Google will loose the real creators over time.....
      There is no way for my videos to be discovered. I get 30 views in a week while poop channels get 100k.
      Really? Is that the future?

    • @tomigun5180
      @tomigun5180 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      True dat. One of my videos have here 4 views in one day, on BitTube: 500. That's an unfair difference, to say the least! Borderline criminal is a better term for it. It is also a lie what she says, that taking a break won't hurt your channel. After coming back from a break, I was shocked to see, how bad my videos look, they were compressed to death and are smudged and unwatchable.

    1. FOCUS ON YOUR AUDIENCE AND ALGORITHM WILL FOLLOW.
    2. ALWAYS KEEP EXPERIMENTING (noice!)
    3. TO BUILD AN AUDIENCE, YOU NEED TO ATTRACT NEW VIEWERS AND RETAIN THE ONES YOU HAVE (Sounds like my prof in Relationship Marketing)

    Thank you Rachel for taking the time to make us more informed content creators. Making this information available to the public is truly appreciated, thanks a bunch. A little feedback - I know the comment section in creator studio has recently been tweaked, sometimes when I click the 'show more replies' link to see if there are more comments, the comments section seems to get stuck (show more replies'- turns into spinning loading circle and does not change). If I go to the actual video and click to see more replies this does not happen. Just wanted to share some feed back

  • @Verlisify
    @Verlisify 3 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    There needs to be a lot more opportunity for discovery. The biggest problem I see are channels getting auto mass recommended despite declining views and stats. Once a channel gets a foothold in the algorithm they are allowed to under perform and still get promoted where a channel that is improving its stats stays suppressed in discovery and doesn't have a fair chance to get in. I think all similar subcount channels in a community should be periodically reset in performance to allow for fair discovery and treatment of all creators. High performers stay high performing and deserving channels get the chance they are never given by the current algorithm discovery

    • @Kasia_Luna
      @Kasia_Luna 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree with this 1000% I honestly feel quite doomed as my videos always plateau after their initial release and it feels like they'll never get picked up, because from a numbers stand point nothing is changing, so why would the algorithm find it now? The other problem is, small channels who self promote have a lot of people, who don't even watch TH-cam click on and click off from platforms like Facebook/Instagram, which messes up the metrics even more.

    • @HungryManKitchen
      @HungryManKitchen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agree, sometimes I feel like the algorithm doesn't work the way it should work. I have content with really good engagement stats and CTRs, they perform worse than my early videos which are tbh less engaging. I'm starting to think there is a random logic in YT discovery system and algorithm.

    • @Malibutomi
      @Malibutomi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Kasia_Luna External views in a way kickstart other view sources sometimes....try it... you share a video...and start getting external views...suddenly views will start popping up from YT search as well and other sources....it either sticks and starts to crawl up or dies down again.

  • @evrimagaci

    This was a very informative video, thank you! The bottom line is, people need to stop thinking the algorithm like a person, it is just code that tries to optimize certain things, learning from previous actions along the way, just like any other ML algorithm. Just one random question: What's up with these random videos being recommended from 10-12 years ago? Is it a weird audience effect on the algorithm or is it a deliberate algorithm-side quirk?

    • @KineticSymphony
      @KineticSymphony 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think those videos randomly being recommended is TH-cam taking high performers, putting those videos in a "maybe" box, and then feeding them out when they need more content at any given time. And sometimes those "maybe" videos do better than expected and so continuously snowball out, at least for a period of time. Even if they're old.

    I LOVE The Transparency! It took a couple of years for TH-cam to realise that this is about people and We Are All In The Same Team Here. TH-cam and Creators need to be a team, because "we" the Advertisers will simply go to where we can have the best ROI we dont care if it is TikTok or facebook or a news paper. And the best way for TH-cam to give Advertisers a good ROI is to work with creators and be transparent to improve the platform for the consumer. So it can survive in the long term, and not get Killed by TikTok 3.0. Like whats happening with Mr. Zuc's Platforms

    Questions Regarding Dislikes to Likes. We’ve heard stories of folks out out a great video and a sworn of dislikes hit the video from random people similar to a bot! How does this or does this effect the chances of the video being recommended by TH-cam? How do you determine what’s real likes and dislikes vs. what’s not?

  • @markhenisty7019
    @markhenisty7019 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    You just gotta love the contradiction in this video. For all out there who believe experimenting to get new subs is a great idea. As soon as you change your topic and try to acquire new viewers and subscribers, naturally your own subscribers will not watch this video, makes sense....however here is what the algorithm does to you and this is straight from their own messaging. "Regular Viewers of your channel are showing less interest in this video.....below that it says "These signals may influence how widely a video is recommended on YT Home or "Next UP"....going down further it says " Fewer views from YT recommendations....so if you believe that's good... well good luck with your channel and I suppose less competition.

    Very interesting series. Highlighting the new features of analytics is always helpful. Many thanks. I would love to learn more about how different categories of content perform across different metrics on TH-cam. For example, as an educational channel I seem to experience a bit of reverse seasonality (i.e. peaks during the week/school year & dips during summer; the video on seasonality was very helpful) and I get a lot more traffic from search than recommendations. I would love more insights about how different categories of content perform differently.

    Rachel, thanks as always. :) I realize you are saying that the system tends to recommend on a video-by video-basis, but it feels like my overall channel gets boxed into very very specific formats even though I have one main overarching genre. If I grow a different subset of an audience it feels like I lose out on any existing reach. Cycling out subscribers in the process, I imagine. Take photography for example. There is a definite difference between viewers that like gear talk videos and viewers that like watching people do photography. It seems like I can't serve both properly. Right now the system really wants to show my content to gear focused viewers, but I do know photography focused viewers exist based on some channels I see. I don't know how to reach them. Even if I reach them then I probably lose that first audience in the process. If videos are truly served on a video-by-video basis then I don't see why I can't serve both.
    Taking it a step further with another example, there are viewers that appear to only like videos on one specific camera. Likely the camera they own or want to buy. Often it's a camera I own because I naturally make a lot of videos using what I have on-hand. I don't keep cameras forever. Is this all because I'm ranked decently in that one tiny piece of viewership and not in another camera I might make a handful of videos on? Sure, I can stop everything else to make 500 videos on the "Canon EOS M50" for a few years until the audience is gone, but I'd rather have an audience that I can be more general with. Is it human nature I'm dealing with? I'd like more nuance, but I don't know if a viewer focused system can properly serve content that might be enriching to a viewer only if they would take a chance on it for a while.
    I have a background in computer science, so I can at least imagine the difficulty and complexity your recommendation and search systems must have. Maybe as AI advances, systems like this can serve videos better than I can package them, lol. I've been around 80k/views per month for a long time, though it's been dropping a bit lately as I've tried to reach those different people and some of my past work has gotten older (specific cameras get less popular over time). Likely alienating the existing viewers in the process as I make videos that don't interest them.
    I don't think making one very specific format of video is something I can do. Feels like the video creator version of a factory worker. I'd probably develop the mental equivalent of a repetitive strain injury if I tried to do it long term, lol.

    Hi Rachel thanks for making this series it’s very helpful. Can you please explain if I have a small channel about a big topic for example iPhones. And there are many videos about this topic that have hundreds of thousands or even millions of views. Is it possible for one of my videos on that small channel to get as many views on a similar video as one of the big channels? It seems like if view counts often are in direct correlation with the channel size no matter the topic. Any insight on this would be helpful

    Very informative Rachel. I love the content :). The mic is on the way, haha. I'd love to hear more about Top 10 Key TH-cam Ranking Factors in 2021. Is it possible!

    Great info / video as ever! I would love more intel / elaboration on the tags part though, I've never heard YT (or any of the experts) describe it as a way to cover spelling errors in search!

    Yes! Number 1 is something I was really concerned about! I was nervous to experiment occasionally because I didn’t want an occasional underperforming video to hurt my channel overall.
