At the end of day 3 Pakistan were 222-8 in 2nd innings with Mushtaq Ahmed 16* and Shoaib Akhtar 1* on the crease.
On day 4 Pakistan were all out for 226 runs in 2nd innings with the lead of 254 runs in 2nd innings.
South Africa needed 255 runs to win in 2nd innings.
At the end of day 4 South Africa were 186-8 in 2nd innings with Mark Boucher 36* and Fanie de Villiers 26* on the crease.
On day 5 South Africa were all out for 225 in 2nd innings.
Mushtaq Ahmed picked up 6 wickets in 2nd innings.
Pakistan won the test.
Mushtaq Ahmed was announced Man Of The Match.

The era of Mushtaq Ahmed also came to an end with this test match. He never took five-wicket again in his career. It won't be wrong to say that he ruled test cricket from December 1995- March 1998. He won test matches for Pakistan in Sydney (1995), Christchurch (1995) Lords(1996), Oval (1996), Peshawar,(1997), Durban (1998) During that short span, no test bowler was as effective as Mushtaq for winning test matches both home and away

Brings back some great memories of my time in Boarding School...there was no TV and our only medium of information was the Newspapers...we were overawed and curious to see this new star called Azhar Mahmood who we had only read about...what a superb series this was...both teams fought tooth and nail right down to the wire...both teams were top teams at that time too...
Lol, don't exaggerate. Pak was lagging in the first test which was a boring draw. And it was defeated by 259 runs in 3rd.
Only the 2nd test was interesting.

In this series Share mehmood was massive form and played a brilliant innings with injured head wore bandage on his head.My school days memories.
Mehmood scores two magnificent centuries in that series and one more a few months earlier when SA toured Pakistan. If I remember correctly, those were his first two test series. Sadly, he never really lived up to that early promise

The match fixer quality leadership of former South African cricket captain Hansie Cronje has been clearly exposed with 30 runs defeat vs Pakistan while chasing 255 runs score (in year 1998) thanx to a lot follies in the batting lineup.Making a veteran opening batter like Andrew Hudson bat at 5th position was the worst mistake that blew up the match.

WASIM AKRAM WAS OUT OF THE TEAM DUE TO MATCH FIXING ALLIGATIONS. BUT IN 3RD TEST WASIM CAME BACK. Thanks for this upload! Still remember Azhar Mehmood’s heroics, Waqar’s massive banana inswingers and Shoaib Akhtar’s searing pace in that series. What an attack Pakistan had then! Hard to fathom why that team never went on to become a champion side
