Most people would call what we do homesteading but we just call it living with no video we just produce what we can and always try to improve. You know real life.

People are out here teaching the hard things. We show all of it. Good, and the bad. Truthfully it's a matter of perspective. People just need to shift their attentions when they really want to learn vs just get the good happy feelings. A Lot of channels focus on the feel-good and I can't hate them for that. We NEED That. It's up to each person to use discernment when taking on homesteading responsibilities themselves.

The real type of channels aren't very popular tho, so it's difficult to find

Location, location, location plays a very big role in how productive a homestead or farming will be. Many don't realize how expensive it is to maintain and most farmers have outside jobs or income just to support their farm. Hence the tons of TH-cam channels. It's hard work and expensive. It's good that you are willing to shine a light on the challenges.

This year the earwigs ate up my corn silks. So was dealing with spotty pollination. Then the squirrels came and started chomping my ears of corn. Had to harvest my flour corn a little early. A lot will be saved for seed next year. Lets hope this second planting goes better.

Last years garden was a bust.this year is good so far.homesteading many years now.good times, years.bad, frustrating times, years.hard manual labor....never spend time away but i like that too.A good animal rule is knowing witch ones are to be food and making sure that they live great lives and only have a bad few minutes in the end....its not easy, any of it.years ive had to haul hundreds of gallons of water.deseased gardens, sick animals, power outages running generator for freezers.on and on.but there is also great satisfaction and good times too. we are who we are and do what we do.God bless....

For watering I set up a drip system with multiple timers to do the watering for me. It's made a huge difference and didn't really cost much to get everything I needed. It saves so much water and puts it right where needed. No soaking the whole plant, which limits the diseases. Weeding IS an issue. I do the same as you, but when I don't get to them before they seed, then it just creates more weeding later in the season next few growing seasons.

I grew up on a farm one of eleven children and everyone above the age of five had a job on the farm. We had huge gardens, butchered our own animals, were hunters and fishermen/and women. We drew water from a well with a rope , bucket, and tickle and washed our clothes in #2 wash tubs and hung them to dry, winter and summer. Our house had no insulation and the fireplace could only do so much, but mom cooked on a wood burning stove summer and winter so we enjoyed the heat from the stove in winter. Unlike my parents I did have modern conviences , but I raised my boys like I grew up with a large garden, dairy animals, meat animals etc. I have a lot of respect for people like you who didn't grow up with that lifestyle .

We utilize natural layered mulch for our garden. I water twice a summer.. maybe… if it’s a drought. Works for us.

Gubba, look into No Dig weed amendments. You will invite certain plants to live, which will force out others. This drives in additional nitrogen, which will help your garden flourish. Look up a publication called "The Ecological Farm" by Helen Atthowe.

@@Johnrider1234 So you don't sell anything? Wow. Why would you need 10 acres of food just for your family? That seems extremely excessive. Why do you choose to spend your every day of life toiling over 10 acres of gardens by hand?

The only thing missing is a self sustaining house like an Earth Ship. Where non dependency on utilities will tie you through season to season. But, everything hinges on zoning regulations. How does one escape regulations that govern what you can build?

How DO I get rid of those lil ground rats?? I can't get rid of them?? I do container gardening because it's too much work to plant and have everything eaten? can't have cats because I have a very small dog, and any animal I have has to be indoors with me.. if it's hot or cold outside I just can't come inside the comfort and leave an animal outside.. I don't have farm animals.. but ANY suggestions would be appreciated.? The baby goats are adorable, Id have them in the house too 😂😂😂😂

You can’t call yourself a Christian and then gossip and slander about someone else who has a FARM and even sells their cattle for beef. You may homestead but they do it all and just because they have the funds doesn’t mean you have to be jealous and slander her and her family on social media. The way they live should not concern you they are ABLE to and not once have they ever slandered ANYONE on their platform. Grow up!

    Always expect the unexpected!
You talk about caring well can you honestly say you were prepared to build a garden?
The weather should be an obvious issue, and the change in weather should not be unexpected. Regarding myself, I think it makes sense to me if I were to build a garden to learn about how to be prepared, for possible weather changes, and maybe an infestation of something that should not be in a garden.
I am going to assume you know what the difference is between planting, and transplanting. Instead of planting your seeds in the garden what I suggest you do is transplant your matured seeds in the garden. Because I think it should be easier to care, for, but I hate to say this, and I believe you are lacking knowledge!
Owning livestock is not necessary, for homesteading. People can do hunting, and fishing as well, so people have different options to choose from regarding how they want to eat.
