Man I caught a little hell from all my 10 year old white friends in Utah when this came out. I told them I thougt Paul sounded like a black soul singer on I Stole Your Love. I could almost hear Little Richard being channeled. Definitely one of my all time favorite Kiss songs and I still stand by my ears.
In the book : Kiss Behind the Mask, basically Paul wanted to do a cover song period. They considered several and wound down to two, and it was Jailhouse Rock or Then she Kissed Me and wound up with that one. Paul liked it and just rolled with it. Also, from what I understand, Paul played all instruments on it except the drums.
Speaking of Peter's drum sound on Shock Me... the opening use of the high hats after the opening drum fill starts will slow strokes on the first few hits then speeds up to 16th notes (or whatever the technical term is, I'm not a drummer). It always drove me nuts and I've been hearing that since '77.
It sounds to me like Peter hits the crash cymbal right after the opening fill and then moves to his ride for the first few beats and then by the end of the second measure is has moved over to the closed hi-hat. It doesn't really bother me. Peter was known to play loose and in the pocket. Thanks for watching.
@frankhiggins9408 I feel / hear the same.👍 It's hard to believe that RNRO and Love Gun were made by the same producer. I like Eddie Kramer's work on RNRO (Sound and Power) much better. Keep on rocking bro.👍🤘🎸
Love Gun is my all-time favorite KISS album; however, I'll never understand that out of all the songs they could have covered, they chose "Then She Kissed Me.". Ugh. I totally agree that the title track “Love Gun” should of been the opening track and I Stole Your Love being the opener for side two. As a matter of fact, I’m going to redo tracks and make a custom Love Gun track listing in my iTunes based on this episode’s analysis because you guys are correct about everything! Side one: 1. Love Gun 2. Christine Sixteen 3. Shock Me 4. Got Love for Sale 5. Tomorrow and Tonight Side two: 1. I Stole Your Love 2. Almost Human 3. Hooligan 4. Plaster Caster 5. Then She Kissed Me P.S. Check out Voice of Doom’s version of Almost Human: th-cam.com/video/S3wTU3ryjVA/w-d-xo.html
@@jsteinheimer heck yes that is the ideal track listing. And YES I love VoD version of almost human. I need to get you into another video. And AJ and I are trying to hook up do do some more VoD review videos
Awesome show and topic. Was fun watching Brandt describing the start of certain songs and making the musical sounds i.e." Shock Me" .and watching Carla's expressions. Because your drum sounds and guitar sounds ARE so spot on. Before I get into the album, I recalled Carla a long time ago(I believe it was her, ..and when she had the Crimson hair) praising "Great Expectations" and I am with her 100% of what a fantastic song it is. Furthermore, I think it's just place is on the best Kiss album Destroyer. If you think about it, Destroyer kinda sets up the listener to envision the machismo of Kiss. Paul on King Of The Nightime World, Gene in God of Thunder, The effect on groupies with Great Expectations. Paul and his love appeal on "Do you Love Me" and so on. So I think Great Expectations is just fine where it is. Now then Love Gun. How to make better? Wow! With just really 5 good songs, it would take some effort. The best 5 Love Gun, Plaster Caster, Christeen Sixteen, Shock Me, and I stole Your Love. The other 5 forgettable. In my view, back when it came out, I thought it was the 6th best studio album. Followed by Dynasty the 7th, Unmasked 8th....and so on. I began to feel they had "writer's cramp." Anyway 5 solid and unique songs is not bad at all. Just for me, it allows me to see how really special the albums before it really are. Thanks Brandt for a great segment amd offerings of your well trained ear. That’s pretty cool. And to the both of you. Keep up the great work!
I believe Gene was inspired by the song “Mr.Soul” in writing Plaster Caster. Mr.Soul was written by Neil Young for Buffalo Springfield in ‘67, and you can see the similarities in the lyrics. Mr. Soul: In a while will the smile on my face turn to plaster Stick around while the clown who is sick does the trick of disaster For the race of my head and my face is moving much faster Is it strange I should change I don't know why don't you ask her Plaster Caster: Plaster caster Grab a hold of me faster If you wanna see my love Just ask her
Oh yeah, I see that. Well...Gene and Paul have been known to borrow and draw inspiration from other bands. You can see that here for sure. Thanks for watching man!
I’ve always thought “Hooligan” is a cool song, and a good vehicle for Peter on “Love Gun.” I found a newborn appreciation for it when I watched Peter perform it on the Eddie Trunk 30th Anniversary show. I also think that “Then She Kissed Me” was a great idea to end the album. The way it fades out sounds like the correct way to end “Love Gun”. My alternate track list: I Stole Your Love Christine Sixteen Shock Me Plaster Caster Love Gun Got Love For Sale Hooligan Almost Human Tomorrow and Tonight Then She Kissed Me
As a KISS fan for the love gun album could you imagine if they included & replaced 'Rocket Ride' for the Awful 'and then she kissed me or even the mediocre 'tomorrow n tonight!
When you say "snare", don't you really mean the tom? I was assuming the engineer/mixer just beefed up the drums to compete with Ace's killer guitar tone. Thank goodness for Shock Me! Finally the guitar man sings a lead vocal and is allowed a longer guitar workout. It's not just good, but the album's stand-out performance. As much as I loved the LG album in 1977, today I won't listen to Tommorow and Tonight, or And Then She Kissed Me--throwbacks to a bygone era of pop. It's also mystifying that Tomorrow And Tonight appears (yet again) on ALIVE II.
I meant snare as well. The snare on Shock Me is mixed louder and has more ring and sustain to it, as well as the toms. Shock Me as a whole sounds entirely different from the other songs on the album.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and opinions with us again.👍👍 Carla was great.👍🤘 You can't argue about personal musical taste. It's always interesting for me to hear other opinions. Compared to its predecessor Rock N Roll Over, I personally don't like the production and sound of the Love Gun album as much. Some songs sound like they were recorded in a garage and the production lacks impact and power. Examples: Makin' Love - Got Love for sale Take me - I stole your love Love Gun is a good hard rock album, but in my opinion not as good as its predecessor. In my opinion, the cover Then she kissed me and Peter's Hooligan (Carla mentioned that) are very weak. My favorite songs on Love Gun are: Love gun 🤘🤘🤘 Shock me 🤘🤘🤘 Almost Human 🤘🤘🤘 Here is the sound better. I stole your love, for example, is a great song. Unfortunately, it was almost destroyed by the production. The live version on Alive II is much better. Because of this and because of 2 total failures I rate the album "only" 7/10. Keep on rocking and greetings from Germany 🇩🇪🤘👍🍻🎸🌍
Thanks for that amazing comment. I agree that the production is weaker than RARO. I wish the whole album had the same production and sound as Shock Me.
I disagree about Christine sixteen . When we listen to songs that song could apply to anyone. If you apply that logic that Gene is talking about a 16-year-old girl. That means all songs apply to them and mean nothing to us. I’m sure there was a lot of 17-year-olds that were talking about their 16-year-old girlfriends. Just like that Mötley Crüe song she’s only 15 if you’re 17 you may be referring to her, I think people need to get their mind out of the gutter
@@jerseyjoe1677 I agree but when we were discussing we were taking as if the view of Christine 16 was from Gene himself since he wrote it and was singing it. Thanks for watching

“Christine Sixteen” has to be considered of its era, and a nod to 1950’s early Rock and Roll.
